    Notes - progress update (2026-09-30)

This is the first update on the Notes iteration for WordPress 7.2. I'll be going over it at Notes office hours in #core-notes on Slack tomorrow, so if anything below looks off or you want to add to it, please reply here or come by.

Claude pulled this together from the tracking issue, the PRs, and the release branches - I reviewed and edited it:

WordPress 7.1 shipped with the work that closed out the last cycle: inline (selection-based) notes, rich text in note bodies, @mention autocomplete, and email notifications for mentioned users. Everything below is the 7.2 cycle, meaning what has merged to trunk since the 7.1 branch was cut in July, plus what is open now.

The three priorities for 7.2 are unchanged: floating notes in the canvas margin, emoji reactions, and Suggestion mode. Two of the three have PRs that could land soon.

    Merged so far this cycle

Also closed: #80479 (avatar ring color) was resolved in discussion, and #75026 (identifying new notes) was closed in favor of the email notification work.

    1. Floating notes in the canvas margin

    Tracking: #79970.

The earlier attempts at this (#79864 and #76024) were closed in favor of the above. A large publisher told @annezazu this is the change they are waiting on, mainly so the notes and settings sidebars can be open at the same time.

    2. Emoji reactions

    Tracking: #75144.

    3. Suggestion mode

    Tracking: #73411.

The feature lands as nine reviewable PRs, #80427 through #80433 plus #82047 (architecture docs) and #82048 (e2e suite), behind the Suggestion Mode experiment. The combined branch #78994 bundles the full stack for testing in Playground: https://playground.wordpress.net/gutenberg.html?pr=78994

Recent testing from @maxschmeling turned up two rough edges that are now fixed in the stack: a type-over now produces a single Replace suggestion (matching Docs) instead of two notes, and Backspace works inside suggested text. There is also an open design question in the thread about giving mode selection a more prominent home in the header, the way Docs does.

The stack has not had a full review pass yet. The first two PRs (#80427 intent modes and experiment gate, #80428 storage and REST) are the place to start.

    4. Other enhancements with open PRs

    5. Bug fixes with open PRs

    What's next

Reviews and testing are the bottleneck on most of this, so if you have time for any of the PRs above, that is the most useful help right now.

I created a 7.3 tracking issue so that as we triage issues that are currently children of this issue and decide they are not in scope, we can move them to the 7.3 milestone:

@adamsilverstein checking in here as we are a week out from beta 1. How are things looking to you?

In particular, I wanted to check in around suggestions. While we've gotten some great publisher feedback, more testing, and more architectural reviews overall, the feature still feels too early to confidently merge. I lean towards adding it first as a Gutenberg experiment asap, along with a structured call for testing that can be sent out to more folks. This will likely also ensure we're moving well together with RTC. cc @peterwilsoncc & @Mamaduka as core tech leads for 7.2.

In terms of the other features, simpler emoji support, filtering for all notes, expand/minified/hide options, floating canvas, and a toolbar item appearing after a note is added are all looking solid and on track from my vantage point.

Agreed. I think it makes sense for large features like Suggestion Mode to land in plugin first and have a longer testing period.

In terms of the other features, simpler emoji support, filtering for all notes, expand/minified/hide options, floating canvas, and a toolbar item appearing after a note is added are all looking solid and on track from my vantage point.

    This also matches my assessment.
