The PR cleans up all SD card specific branches and refactors the file system abstractions into storage and SD bus classes.

Tested device targets:

  • native-tft
  • LilyGo T-Deck
  • LilyGo T-Watch Ultra
  • LilyGo T-LoRa Pager
  • Heltec v4
  • elecrow panel esp32-s3
  • elecrow panel esp32-p4
  • elecrow ThinkNode M9
  • elecrow ThinkNode MX
  • Seeed Wio Tracker L2
  • Seeed Mesh Pager X2
  • RAK WisMesh Tab v2
  • Makefabs Nomad Terminal

The History

  • it started with using arduino SD library (SD.h) to read files from SPI SD card (HAS_SDCARD)
  • another device used SDIO sdcard so SD_MMC.h was needed and integrated via #ifdef HAS_SD_MMC
  • SD lib supports only Fat32 at most, so SdFat library was integrated that supports exFat. It supports only SPI but not SDIO. Because SdFat library does not follow the arduino fs::FS / fs::File so a small adapter layer was required to hide the differences (ISdCard)
  • LVGL implements a mechanism to load images from SD using registered drivers (lv_fs_drv_t ) when calling lv_image_set_src (), so another hierarchy of TileServices was implemented for these SD types and filesystems: SDCardService, SDMMCCardService, SdFatService, LinuxFileSystemService, and later RemoteSDService for a particular device. As this mechanism worked only for SD it was abandoned and left in the code (unused, see all #if LV_USE_FS_ARDUINO_SD).
  • native linux has no SDcard it uses a folder shared with the littleFS port defined and implemented by the portduino layer ~/.portduino/default/ , SDCardService worked out-of-the-box with this portduino layer but is a bit slow compared to direct file access like LinuxFileSystemService . However the latter one is missing the piece to write to ~/.portduino/default/ so it is currently not used.
  • then we added an ftp server to access the SD card remotely. As the ftpServer uses fs::FS we needed another adapter layer for SdFat (SdFatFSImpl)
  • then we migrated to arduino-esp32 3.x via pioarduino (platformio fork) which has access to esp-idf libs and there is support for exFat (FATFS) via ff.h which supports SDIO, so we implemented FATFS for SD_MMC card that did not yet have exFat support. FATFS also supports the needed uint64_t instead of the uint32_t functions that FS has implemented. A new guard was added: MAPFILE_USE_FATFS
  • in between we also had a device (SenseCAP Indicator) with two processors one running the firmware, the other has access to SD card
  • we added pmtiles format PMTileService which can load tiles from an archive that could be on any of the supported file systems and SD types so another hierarchy IMapFileSystem was born.
  • then we added support for esp32-p4 which for some reason required PosixFileSystem so a hierarchy of IFileSystem classes were introduced that serve another abstraction to hide away all the details for the user (e.g. TFTView_320x240.cpp).

Current state

There are four parallel hierarchies, and each one repeats the same platform switch.

Concern Interface Implementations Platform switch
Card lifecycle, stats, map helpers ISdCard SDCard (Portduino / SD_MMC / SD.h / P4 IDF, 4 variants in one class), SdFsCard, RemoteSdCard, NoSdCard 16 #if in SdCard.cpp, repeated 3× in TFTView
Tile load/save ITileService SDCardService, SDMMCCardService, SdFatService, RemoteSDService, LinuxFileSystemService, FileSystemService TFTView_320x240.cpp
PMTiles random read IMapFileSystem SDMapFileSystem (VFS or MAPFILE_USE_FATFS), SdFatMapFileSystem, RemoteMapFileSystem MapFileSystem.h
Generic file I/O (backup/restore) IFileSystem PosixFileSystem (P4), ArduinoFileSystem, SdFatFileSystem FileSystemFactory.cpp
FTP fs::FS SD_MMC, SD, SdFsExFatImpl wrapper TFTView_320x240.cpp

That is about 3,900 lines. Most of it does the same things: open, read, seek, list, make directories, and read card stats. Dead or nearly dead code:

  • LVGL filesystem drivers: the LV_USE_FS_ARDUINO_SD branches and all the fs_open/fs_read… callbacks in the tile services. LV_USE_FS_ARDUINO_SD is 0, and nothing loads an "S:" path. RemoteSDService registers an LVGL driver that nothing reads through.
  • FileSystemService and LinuxFileSystemService: never instantiated.
  • HAS_SDIO_CLASS: a Teensy-only SdFat path.
  • /sdcard prefixes in backup()/restore(): they exist only because of the P4 POSIX split.

Facts from the repos that drive the design:

  1. All embedded device-ui targets are ESP32-S3 or ESP32-P4. Every -tft env is S3/P4 or native. The nRF52 heltec-mesh-solar-tft does not use device-ui.
  2. POSIX can't address past 2 GiB on ESP32. In the Xtensa toolchain, sys/_types.h defines typedef long _off_t, a 32-bit type. VFS lseek therefore tops out at 2 GiB. The riscv newlib headers in this toolchain also use long; only the picolibc variant is 64-bit. This is the real reason MAPFILE_USE_FATFS exists.
  3. Arduino SD.h and SD_MMC.h on ESP32 are already IDF FatFs plus VFS. "SD.h is FAT32 only" is just FF_FS_EXFAT 0 in ffconf.h, which esp32_fatfs_exfat.py patches. That script is registered on only 2 envs: thinknode_m9 and wio_tracker_L2.
  4. The same card is mounted twice today. The firmware's setupSDCard() mounts HAS_SDCARD boards with SD.h (e.g. t-deck-tft), and device-ui then mounts the same card again with SdFat. Two FAT drivers with separate caches on one card is a corruption risk once both write.
  5. The CrowPanel 2.4/2.8/3.5 boards can't use a hardware SPI host for SD. They use SDCARD_USE_SOFT_SPI because the display is on SPI2 and LoRa is on SPI3.

3. New Design

Backends

Backend Platform File I/O Replaces
FatFsStorage + ISdBus ESP32 (S3, P4) f_open/f_lseek/f_read (64-bit), f_opendir, f_getfree, f_mkfs. ISpiLock::Guard lives here, in one place SDCard (3 ESP variants), SdFsCard, SDMapFileSystem, SdFatMapFileSystem, ArduinoFileSystem, SdFatFileSystem, PosixFileSystem, SdFatFSImpl, MAPFILE_USE_FATFS, SDCARD_SHARE_SPI
SdmmcBus S3 and P4 SDIO esp_vfs_fat_sdmmc_mount; drive number via ff_diskio_get_pdrv_card(). The P4 code already does this, and S3 just passes different pins SD_MMC.h and the P4/non-P4 split
SpiBus hardware SPI SD.begin(cs, SPIClass, freq): same FatFs/VFS mount, SPI transactions stay compatible with RadioLib. Ask ff_diskio_get_drive() for the free drive number just before begin() SdFat on SPI and the double mount
SoftSpiBus CrowPanel small ff_diskio_register over a soft-SPI block driver SoftSpiDriver + SdFat FS
PosixStorage Portduino (Linux, macOS) fopen/fseeko/opendir/statvfs rooted at portduinoVFS->mountpoint() Portduino SDCard, SDCardService on PortduinoFS, LinuxFileSystemService (whose missing write path is fixed for free)
RemoteStorage SenseCAP Indicator IRemoteFS chunks; RemoteFile keeps the one-chunk read-ahead RemoteSdCard, RemoteSDService, RemoteMapFileSystem
NullStorage no SD trivial NoSdCard

arduinoFS() returns the SD instance on SPI, or a fs::FS built on a VFSImpl with the mount point (e.g. /sdcard) on SDMMC. FTP availability then becomes storage->arduinoFS() != nullptr instead of #if defined(HAS_SDCARD) && !defined(ARCH_PORTDUINO).

Consumers

  • StorageTileService: one class, about 80 lines, replacing the six tile services. load does open → size → read → decode → lv_image_set_src. save does mkdirs(parent) → open(Write) → write.
  • PMTileService(IStorage&, ITileService *fallback): opens an IFile and calls readAt(). IMapFileSystem is gone.
  • MapStorage helpers: free functions on IStorage& for loadMapStyles, hasMapArchive, getUrlProvider and setUrlProvider. One implementation instead of four.
  • TFTView:
    • loadMap() shrinks to a single path: new MapPanel(p, new PMTileService(*storage, new StorageTileService(*storage))). The backup service is URL on ESP and CURL on Portduino, already chosen at the HTTP-service boundary.
    • updateSDCard(), formatSDCard() and ejectSDCard() use mount()/info()/format()/eject() with no #if.
    • Backup/restore use open() plus a small snprintf/readLine helper. The /sdcard prefix logic goes away.

What remains conditional

  • StorageFactory.cpp has one #if chain: SENSECAP → Remote, PORTDUINO → Posix, HAS_SD_MMC → FatFs(Sdmmc), SDCARD_USE_SOFT_SPI → FatFs(SoftSpi), HAS_SDCARD → FatFs(Spi), else Null.
  • Each backend .cpp is guarded once at file level (ARDUINO_ARCH_ESP32 / ARCH_PORTDUINO).
  • RemoteStorage is plain C++, so it builds on native. With PosixStorage, that gives doctests for PMTileService, MapStorage and RemoteStorage against a fake IRemoteFS.

Net effect: about 22 files become about 9, there is one storage interface instead of four, and the SdFat dependency goes away (except, optionally, as a block driver for the soft-SPI boards).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added unified storage support across supported platforms, including card status, capacity information, mounting, formatting, and ejection.
    • Map tiles can be loaded and saved through storage, with support for map styles, PMTiles archives, and URL providers.
    • Added storage-backed key backup and restore, plus FTP access where supported.
    • Host-folder storage is available on supported desktop configurations.
  • Improvements
    • Map archives reopen when storage changes, and missing tiles display a fallback image.
    • Storage status distinguishes missing cards, unavailable filesystems, and other errors.

202-204: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

Treat asynchronous statistics as an optional, measured optimization.

RP2040Storage::info() holds ISpiLock::Guard and ioMutex while freeClusterCount() runs, so a FAT scan can delay other SPI and storage operations. A background task would still need those locks during the scan. It would avoid blocking the UI thread, but it would not remove shared-bus contention.

This path scans once per mount or explicit refresh. No current RP2040/RP2350 target timing evidence establishes a material workflow failure. Do not require the cache/task redesign without profiling. If profiling shows a stall, invalidate any cached value after IFile::write(), mkdir(), and remove() because generation() does not cover those mutations.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Stop the FTP server before ejectSDCard unmounts the card.

ejectSDCard unmounts the SD volume but leaves the FTP server running. UiFtpServer documents that the filesystem passed to start() must stay properly initialized. An FTP session that is active during eject can keep serving a volume that device-ui has already unmounted.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply the SDMMC guard to the FTP implementation.

The view includes UiFtpServer for HAS_SD_MMC, but the FTP UI handlers and status polling use only HAS_SDCARD. The FTP implementation also selects a stub when HAS_SDCARD is absent. An SDMMC-only target therefore cannot expose or start FTP. Align the guards in TFTView_320x240.cpp and UiFtpServer.cpp, while preserving the ARCH_PORTDUINO exclusion.

The backup-flow consequence is not established: backup() is unguarded, and successful updateSDCard() enables the backup/restore control independently of these FTP guards.

Update the FTP UI handler and status-polling guards in TFTView_320x240.cpp and
the implementation-versus-stub selection in UiFtpServer.cpp to support
HAS_SD_MMC as well as HAS_SDCARD. Preserve the ARCH_PORTDUINO exclusion so
SDMMC-only targets can expose and start FTP without enabling it on excluded
builds.
