Closes #719, which asks how to insert music, video, Excel, Word or PowerPoint files into a document.

What it does

EmbeddedFileRun, in a new entry, docx/embedded-files, embeds a file in a document as an OLE object, as Word's Insert > Object > Create from File does. The document shows a picture of the file, and the file opens when the picture is double-clicked.

import { EmbeddedFileRun } from "docx/embedded-files";

new Paragraph({
    children: [
        new EmbeddedFileRun({
            fileName: "budget.xlsx",
            data: fs.readFileSync("./budget.xlsx"),
            preview: { type: "png", data: fs.readFileSync("./budget.png") },
            transformation: { width: 241, height: 111 },
        }),
    ],
});
  • Office files are embedded as themselves, with Word's ProgIDs and part names, so Office opens them from the document:
    • .xlsx and .xlsm open in Excel
    • .docx and .docm open in Word
    • .pptx and .pptm open in PowerPoint
  • Any other file is embedded in an OLE package (ProgID Package, word/embeddings/oleObject1.bin): a sound, a video, a PDF, or an older .xls, .doc or .ppt. Word for Windows opens a packaged file with the application Windows opens its type with.
  • The package is written as Word 2016 and later write one. The root has the packager's class, and there are three streams:
    • \1CompObj and \3ObjInfo are byte-for-byte what Word writes.
    • \1Ole10Native holds the file, its name in ANSI and in Unicode.
    • The packager's format isn't documented. The layout comes from four Word-saved sample documents (Word 2007 to 2016+), Apache POI's writer and LibreOffice's reader.
  • The picture is given in preview (png, jpg, gif or bmp). docx can't draw a workbook's cells or an application's icon. displayAsIcon sets Word's Display as icon, and altText gives the description Word shows as Alt Text.
  • The picture frame's shape type is written once per part, in the part's first object, as Word does. Writing it in every object gives two elements with the same id, which the Open XML SDK validator rejects.
  • Works anywhere a run goes: tables, headers, footers, footnotes, comments, and documents patchDocument fills in.
  • Errors:
    • An Office file that isn't a zip, such as an .xls named .xlsx, throws, as Office couldn't open it.
    • A preview type Word can't draw, such as svg or a missing type, throws too.

Changes outside the new entry

  • The compound file writer moved from docx/macros to src/compound-file, which both entries bundle, as src/text-layout is shared now. It gained:
    • a class id for the root storage
    • DIFAT sectors, so it can write a file of more than about 7 MB, such as a video (it used to throw)
  • OleObjectRelationshipType is a separate type, as MacroRelationshipType is. Adding the oleObject relationship to RelationshipType made check-api report a breaking change, as PackagePart exposes it in its options.
  • PackagePart is generic over its relationship type, defaulting to RelationshipType, so PackagePart without a type argument is unchanged.
  • PackageParts.Array keeps its released type. File exposes it, and the compiler only reads the parts' content.
  • check-api passes.

How it was checked

In Word for Mac 16.114:

  • Every object reads as an embedded OLE object with its ProgID and size, including those in a table, a header and a footnote.
  • OLEFormat.Open opens an embedded .docx and .docm in Word. A change to the embedded document is saved back into it when the document is saved.
  • A packaged .wav is shown, and Word saves its three streams back unchanged. Opening it fails, as on any Mac: "The server application, source file or item cannot be found."
  • Word reads the alt text.
  • When saved, Word writes the same w:object, v:shape and o:OLEObject markup as docx, keeps docx's shape ids, and adds only o:spid and w14:anchorId.

Elsewhere:

  • LibreOffice 26.8 imports an embedded .xlsx as a spreadsheet object and a .docx as a text object. It keeps a package as an OLE object, and draws every picture: in the body, a table cell, a header and a footnote.
  • oletools' oleobj parses the package and extracts a byte-identical .wav. olefile reads a 40 MB compound file with DIFAT sectors in strict mode.
  • The demo, and a document with objects in every kind of part packed twice, pass the Open XML SDK validator for Office 2010 to Microsoft 365, as does the demo's embedded workbook.

Not checked:

  • Word for Windows, so neither opening a packaged file there nor opening a workbook or presentation in Excel or PowerPoint, which aren't installed here.
  • The package matches what Word for Windows writes, but a check in Word for Windows before release would be worth it.

Docs and demo

  • New page, docs/usage/embedded-files.md, with live examples. docx-preview doesn't draw w:object, so the live examples say to download the file.
  • README section.
  • demo/embedded-files/embedded-files.ts, with assets in demo/assets/embedded-files:
    • a workbook made with LibreOffice that the validator passes
    • a picture of its table
    • a one-second chime
    • two icons

Not in this PR

  • Making the picture from the file, such as Word's icon with the file's name, which Word draws as an EMF.
  • Linked files (Type="Link"), and floating objects.
  • Older Office files as their own OLE objects, such as Excel.Sheet.8, rather than packages.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for embedding Excel, Word, PowerPoint, audio, and other files in generated Word documents.

…les (#719)

EmbeddedFileRun, in a new entry, docx/embedded-files, embeds a file in
a document as an OLE object, as Word's Insert > Object > Create from
File does: the document shows a picture of the file, and the file opens
when it is double-clicked. An Excel workbook, Word document or
PowerPoint presentation (.xlsx, .xlsm, .docx, .docm, .pptx, .pptm) is
embedded as itself, with Word's ProgIDs, so Office opens it. Any other
file, such as a sound, a video or a PDF, is embedded in an OLE package
(ProgID Package), which Word for Windows opens with the application the
computer opens its type with. The package is written as Word 2016 and
later write one: its CompObj and ObjInfo streams are byte for byte
Word's, and its Ole10Native stream holds the file and its name. The
picture is given as the preview, and the picture frame's shape type is
written once in each part, as Word writes it.

The compound file writer moves from docx/macros to src/compound-file,
which both entries bundle. It now gives the root a class id, and writes
DIFAT sectors, so it writes files of more than about 7 MB, such as a
video. The oleObject relationship is a type of its own, and PackagePart
is generic over its relationship type, defaulting to RelationshipType,
so the released types stay compatible.

Checked in Word for Mac 16.114: each object is an embedded OLE object
with its ProgID, in the body, a table, a header and a footnote; an
embedded .docx and .docm open in Word, and a change to one is saved in
the document; a package is kept unchanged when Word saves. LibreOffice
imports a workbook as a spreadsheet and a document as text, and draws
every picture. oletools extracts a packaged file unchanged, and the
demo passes the Open XML SDK validator for Office 2010 to Microsoft 365.
Word for Windows wasn't checked.

Comment thread src/embedded-files/picture-frame-shape-type.ts
An embedded file writes the picture frame's shape type (_x0000_t75) in
the first object of each part, but patchDocument inserts content into a
template's part without knowing which shape types it has. A template
with an embedded file of its own, or another legacy picture, got a
second shape type with the same id, which the Open XML SDK validator
rejects.

patchDocument now leaves out of the content it inserts each v:shapetype
whose id the part has already, as it renumbers drawings and bookmarks
so they keep clear of the template's. The inserted shapes use the
part's own shape type, which Word and LibreOffice find wherever it is
in the part, even after the shape.

…t fills in

patchDocument declares on the template's document the namespaces of the
elements patches insert, so they are bound even when the template
doesn't declare them. VML's (v) and Office's (o) weren't among them, so
an embedded file, which is drawn as a VML shape with Office's OLE data
(o:OLEObject), inserted into a template that doesn't declare them made
document.xml not well-formed, with an unbound prefix, and Word couldn't
open it. Text boxes, which are VML shapes too, had the same problem.

@coderabbitai On your outside-diff comment in this review, "Declare the VML namespace for embedded-file patches" (src/patcher/from-docx.ts:396):

Agreed, and reproduced. I patched an embedded file into a template whose w:document declares neither xmlns:v nor xmlns:o, and the result had an unbound prefix, so word/document.xml wasn't well-formed.

The diff you suggested wasn't enough. The embedded file also writes Office's namespace: o:OLEObject, o:ole, o:title, o:spt and o:lock. So patchDocument now declares both v and o on the template's document. Text boxes, which write v:shape and v:textbox, had the same problem and are fixed too.

The new test, should declare the VML and Office namespaces when patchDocument inserts a file into a document without them, fails without the fix. With it, the reproduction is well-formed and passes the Open XML SDK validator. Fixed in eddc3ac461 (#3802).

@dolanmiu Thanks for the correction. My suggested diff was incomplete: embedded files need both v and o.

I checked src/patcher/from-docx.ts and confirmed that it now declares both namespaces. The regression test removes both declarations from the template and checks that patchDocument restores them. This addresses the reported namespace issue for word/document.xml, including the text-box case.

I did not run the test or the Open XML SDK validator.

Learning: In docx, patchDocument in src/patcher/from-docx.ts must declare both the VML namespace (xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml") and the Office namespace (xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office") on the template's w:document when inserting embedded files. EmbeddedFileRun uses both v-prefixed and o-prefixed XML. Text boxes also require the VML namespace. Templates can omit these declarations, so patchDocument must supply them rather than rely on the template.

image or a text box patched into a header whose template doesn't
declare them had unbound prefixes, and the part wasn't well-formed.

The same namespaces are now declared on the root of each part patches
are written into: the document, headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes
and comments.
