Description

Target issue

closes #15425

Part of #15360 (parent: #14594). Slice 4c of 4.

Implementation Details

Adds a Config API wrapper in jans-config-api/plugins/fido2-plugin for the FIDO2 server native app readiness check. Admins call the Config API; the plugin proxies to the FIDO2 server over HTTP.

Endpoint: POST /jans-config-api/fido2/rp/{rpConfigId}/readiness

  • Fido2ReadinessResource: @ProtectedApi with FIDO2_CONFIG_WRITE_ACCESS (https://jans.io/oauth/config/fido2.write); super scopes FIDO2_ADMIN_ACCESS and SUPER_ADMIN_WRITE_ACCESS. A read scope is deliberately not enough, because the call makes the server fetch external files. No new scope is registered. Registered in ApiApplication under a new "Fido2 - Native Readiness" tag.
  • Fido2ReadinessService: builds the upstream call.
    • Target is fido2Util.getIssuer() + /jans-fido2/restv1/rp/ + the RP id percent-encoded as ONE path segment (so : and / cannot change the target).
    • The caller supplies only the configured RP id and optionally {"recheck":true}. The upstream body {"recheck":bool} is built in the service; other body fields are ignored and never read. A body that is not a JSON object returns 400.
    • Forwards the caller's Authorization header.
    • Forwards the principal as X-Jans-Requested-By, taken from the caller's User-inum header, sanitized to plain characters, capped at 128, else unknown. User-inum is caller-supplied, so this value is informational only and must not be used for authorization or as a trusted audit identity.
    • Upstream 200/400/404/429 are passed through unchanged (429 keeps Retry-After). Any other upstream status, or no response, returns 500; the upstream body is not passed on.
  • Fido2Util.executePost, Constants additions.
  • fido2-plugin-swagger.yaml: entry added by hand. Regenerating through the build rewrites the whole file, so it was not regenerated here.
  • pom.xml: mockito-core test dependency (version managed by jans-bom) and a second surefire execution unit-tests running testng-unit.xml.

Depends on part 4b (FIDO2 server endpoint POST /jans-fido2/restv1/rp/{rpConfigId}/readiness, branch jans-fido2-native-readiness-endpoint, PR not yet opened). There is no compile dependency: the plugin only calls the server over HTTP, so this PR builds and can merge independently, but it is only useful once 4b is deployed. Landing order: a -> b -> c -> d. The header name X-Jans-Requested-By is agreed with 4b.

Tests (15, all pass): Fido2ReadinessServiceTest (8) and Fido2ReadinessResourceTest (7). They cover encoding of : and /, caller cannot change the target, token and principal forwarded, hostile principal sanitized, 404, 429 with Retry-After, blank id rejected, no response -> 500, scope annotations pinned, body handling, other upstream status -> 500.

Run with:

cd jans-config-api/plugins/fido2-plugin
mvn test-compile surefire:test@unit-tests

The pre-existing live-server suite (testng.xml) fails in @BeforeSuite without a running Config API and skips everything; that was already the case before this change, which is why the unit tests have their own execution. Plain mvn test runs the live suite first and fails before reaching the unit tests. No live-server 401 test was added.

Known risks

  • An encoded / (%2F) in a path segment may be rejected by some servlet containers. This only matters for RP ids the 4b server already rejects (valid RP ids are host names).
  • The swagger yaml is hand-edited and will be rewritten the next time the build regenerates it.

Test and Document the changes

  • Static code analysis has been run locally and issues have been fixed
  • Relevant unit and integration tests have been added/updated
  • Relevant documentation has been updated if any (i.e. user guides, installation and configuration guides, technical design docs etc)

The swagger spec (jans-config-api/plugins/docs/fido2-plugin-swagger.yaml) is updated in this PR and is the technical doc for the endpoint. The user-facing docs page is part 4d (#15426). There is no docs: commit in this PR.

Please check the below before submitting your PR. The PR will not be merged if there are no commits that start with docs: to indicate documentation changes or if the below checklist is not selected.

  • I confirm that there is no impact on the docs due to the code changes in this PR.

Walkthrough

The FIDO2 plugin adds a protected Config API endpoint that proxies readiness checks to the FIDO2 server. It forwards request data and caller identity, handles upstream responses, registers and documents the endpoint, and adds unit tests.

Changes: Native readiness proxy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and send readiness requests
jans-config-api/plugins/fido2-plugin/src/main/java/io/jans/configapi/plugin/fido2/service/Fido2ReadinessService.java, .../util/Constants.java, .../util/Fido2Util.java
The service encodes the RP ID as a path segment, forwards the recheck flag and applicable headers, parses the upstream response, and sanitizes caller identity. Fido2Util adds JSON POST support.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template and provides the target issue, implementation details, dependencies, endpoint behavior, test coverage, test command, known risks, and documentation status. The static analysis checkbox is not selected, and the documentation statements are somewhat inconsistent, but the description is otherwise substantially complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Only issue #15425 is active and directly linked. Parent #15360 and #14594 are context only. Requirements checked against the reviewed head:

[Endpoint and scope] Fido2ReadinessResource is @Path(Constants.RP) with @POST on Constants.RP_CONFIG_ID_READINESS. It is annotated @ProtectedApi with FIDO2_CONFIG_WRITE_ACCESS. FIDO2_ADMIN_ACCESS and SUPER_ADMIN_WRITE_ACCESS are super scopes. No new scope is added. The PR answers the open scope question in its description.

[URL and target confinement] Fido2ReadinessService.getReadinessUrl builds fido2Util.getIssuer() + /jans-fido2/restv1/rp/ + encodeSegment(rpConfigId) + /readiness. encodeSegment percent-encodes : and /. The caller supplies no URL, host, port, or path. The body is built in the service as {"recheck":bool}.

[Token and principal forwarding] buildHeaders forwards the Authorization value. principalOf resolves the caller from token introspection: user inum, else username, else client ID. It does not read a request header. The value goes to X-Jans-Requested-By after sanitize (plain characters, 128-character cap, unknown fallback). The PR description still says the principal comes from the caller's User-inum header. The code does not do this. The description is stale. The code meets the issue requirement, which asks for the authenticated principal. The description should be corrected before merge.

[Upstream responses] The resource passes 200, 400, 404, and 429 through. 429 keeps Retry-After. Other upstream statuses and missing responses return 500, and the upstream body is not returned.

[Registration and docs] ApiApplication registers the resource under the new tag. The Swagger entry documents the operation, scopes, and responses. The swagger file was hand-edited and was not regenerated.

[Tests] The unit suites Fido2ReadinessServiceTest and Fido2ReadinessResourceTest cover encoding, target confinement, token and principal forwarding, sanitization, 404, 429 with Retry-After, blank RP id, body handling, and other statuses. The PR reports 15 passing tests. The live-server suite is an environment-dependent failure before this change. The issue asks for scope-enforcement tests, and the PR adds only an annotation pin, not a live 401 test. Scope enforcement is therefore checked through the annotation, not by a runtime test.

No unmet coding requirement is found. The server-side endpoint from part (b) is outside this PR and is not required here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed files relate to issue #15425 or to its listed scope:

  • Fido2ReadinessResource and Fido2ReadinessService: the requested proxy.
  • Constants and Fido2Util.executePost: path, scope, header constants, and the HTTP helper used by the service.
  • ApiApplication: resource registration and tag.
  • fido2-plugin-swagger.yaml: the documented operation, named in the issue scope.
  • pom.xml, testng-unit.xml, and the two test classes: test support for the new unit tests. Mockito is a test-scoped dependency. The second surefire execution runs only the new unit suite.
  • fido2-readiness-response.json: the example response referenced by the Swagger entry.

The diff adds no FIDO2 server endpoint, cache, rate limit, audit code, user documentation, Admin UI change, caller-supplied URL endpoint, or new OAuth scope. The PR description's stale principal source does not add out-of-scope code.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 13.95% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 43 functions across 7 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
