Summary

  • Add opt-in verification.gate: "required" while preserving existing boolean gate behavior.
  • Require every configured check to have a fresh passing receipt for every model completion, including unchanged workspaces, task agents, and structured output.
  • Allow at most three verification repair continuations, then fail through the existing turn/goal/headless error paths rather than reporting unverified success.
  • Revalidate after completion gates and after turn-end observers; final invalidation fails without replaying observers.
  • Keep direct user shell commands and restart control ungated, and preserve permissions, cancellation, and repeated-tool-call guards.
  • Document configuration, all-turn scope, headless outcomes, and fingerprint limitations.

Validation

  • bun test --isolate apps/cli/src/verification/verification.test.ts apps/cli/src/config/settings.test.ts — 48 passed.
  • bun run --cwd apps/cli typecheck — passed.
  • bun checks:fix — passed, including 961 CLI tests, native checks/benchmark, lint/format/typecheck, website tests/build, eval-report tests, and release validation.
  • Critical cases cover repair exhaustion, plain/structured and task completion, fresh receipt reuse, all-check repair, stale evidence after hooks, unavailable fingerprints, denial/cancellation, and headless JSON failure/nonzero exit.

Self-review inspected all 10 files / 23 hunks / +332 / -39 against repository standards and the feature contract; no blockers found. Independent read-only code-review also passed the same complete inventory with zero blockers on both axes. All 10 GitHub checks passed, including the eight-platform release-build matrix and CodeRabbit. The only CodeRabbit warning requests docstrings; it is not applied because AGENTS.md explicitly prohibits code comments. No review threads remain unresolved.

Scope and limits

This implements final research recommendation 01: evidence-backed completion with bounded repair. Checkpoints, shell sandboxing, search, and editor integration are not part of this PR. Required mode is explicitly opt-in and needs at least one check. Fresh fingerprints are observations of tracked and non-ignored workspace files, not proof of correctness or atomic snapshots; non-Git/unavailable evidence cannot satisfy the contract.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a required verification mode that blocks turn completion until every configured check has a fresh passing result, even when the workspace is unchanged. Failed checks can trigger up to three repair attempts.
    • Required verification can be configured through user or trusted project settings and must include at least one check.
  • Documentation

    • Updated verification guidance to explain required checks, completion behavior, and how hooks affect verification results.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The verification configuration now supports a "required" gate. Required checks must have fresh passing receipts before a turn completes. Turn handling, failure reporting, tests, and documentation cover this behavior.

Changes: Required Verification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and evaluate verification gates
apps/cli/src/verification/settings.ts, apps/cli/src/verification/service.ts, apps/cli/src/verification/commands.ts, apps/cli/src/config/settings.test.ts, docs/configs.md, docs/commands-and-skills.md
The settings parser accepts "required" when checks are configured. The verification service creates required or changed gates and evaluates check results. The prompt, tests, and documentation describe the gate settings and behavior.
Enforce gates during turn completion
apps/cli/src/agent/session/session.ts, apps/cli/src/agent/session/turn.ts, apps/cli/src/verification/verification.test.ts, docs/plugins.md
The session passes the gate into turn handling. Required verification runs after completion hooks, allows up to three repair continuations, and blocks completion when checks fail or evidence is invalidated. Tests and plugin documentation cover the completion paths.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Require fresh verification evidence with bounded repair" matches the main change. The PR adds an opt-in verification.gate: "required" mode. That mode requires fresh passing receipts for every configured check before completion. It also caps verification repair at three continuations. The changed files (service.ts, turn.ts, settings.ts, verification tests, and docs) all implement this behavior. The title is specific and concise, and it avoids file lists and vague terms.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 7 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Final code review — PASS

Reviewed the immutable diff fcd449c1094246c894e4296c5801e731a1b4d07a → 59800a3e780bedbfb463b1affe11a1e4d9b64359, both directly and through an independent read-only sub-agent using the project code-review skill. Both reviews cover all 10 files, 23 hunks, 332 added lines, and 39 deleted lines; no renames or binaries.

Standards

PASS: 0 blockers; 0 advisories reported. Typed configuration/gate seams, existing receipt and error infrastructure, permissions/redaction, no plugin dependencies, no new code comments or casts, and current configuration/plugin documentation.

Spec

PASS: 0 blockers; 0 advisories reported. Checked default/legacy compatibility, all-check fresh evidence, bounded repair, primary/task and structured completion, post-hook revalidation, unavailable evidence, denial/cancellation, direct-shell/control exemptions, goal failure, and headless nonzero failure. Critical regression tests passed.

Verification and CodeRabbit

  • Local bun checks:fix passed, including 961 CLI tests and build/release checks.
  • Focused verification/config suite: 48 passed.
  • GitHub: all 10 checks passed — main checks job, eight release builds, and CodeRabbit.
  • CodeRabbit reported no inline code findings or merge blockers. Its docstring-coverage warning conflicts with the explicit AGENTS.md rule “No code comments”; no docstrings or unrelated bot configuration changes were added. User-facing documentation is updated instead.
  • No unresolved review threads; reviewed head and PR base remain unchanged.
