Guard session ownership and acknowledge persistence before side effects - #86
Implements the two follow-ups requested after #85: single-writer saved-session ownership and acknowledged persistence barriers.
Add an OS-held transcript writer lock through the existing Rust addon, with explicit ownership transfer and automatic release on process death. Acquire before resume/repair; ordinary history reads never truncate files.
Drain pending writes before reset, fork, session switches, shutdown, and foreground/background handoff. Reserve detached-worker ownership before releasing the foreground writer, and reap failed startups before reloading.
Acknowledge tool intent before execution, results before later work, and the terminal record before reporting success. Latch the original storage failure, cancel active work cooperatively, and block further prompts/continuations.
Document recovery and limitations. No new dependencies, transcript schema migration, exactly-once claim, or per-append power-loss durability claim.
Verification
bun checks:fix passed on a88283b54f7e69c73dfaad8b6da7d7f274bc86a4: 947 CLI tests, 58 native tests, 17 website tests, 3 script tests; typecheck, lint/format, clippy, native benchmark, website build, and compiled release self-check.
Critical tests cover competing processes, same-process exclusion, crash recovery, read-only versus owned tail repair, reset/fork/shutdown, foreground/background handoffs, failed worker startup, delayed intent acknowledgement, and injected intent/result/terminal write failures for tools and direct shell.
Concurrent-close success/failure and compaction storage-error regressions added after review. Both previously failing reproductions now pass.
Review
Parent and independent sub-agent reviewed all 34 files and 108 hunks of the initial immutable diff on Standards and Spec axes. Both found the same two blockers: concurrent close acknowledged too early, and manual compaction mislabeled storage failure as interruption. Both are fixed in the second commit. Parent and independent follow-up review of all 3 files and 5 correction hunks passed on both Standards and Spec axes with zero remaining blockers.
CodeRabbit identified two additional issues: missing background-attach guidance when the worker holds ownership, and cancellation during intent acknowledgement losing completed sibling results. Both were reproduced and fixed in the third commit, with regression coverage. Its default docstring warning is not applied because AGENTS.md explicitly prohibits code comments; user documentation is updated. Parent and independent review of the final 4-file/5-hunk delta both passed Standards and Spec with zero blockers. Both CodeRabbit threads are resolved. The follow-up automated review was skipped by the service allowance; the corrected head was independently reviewed and fully tested locally. The final reviewed head passed the required GitHub check and all eight release builds (macOS, Linux GNU/musl, and Windows; x64 and ARM64).

Walkthrough
This change adds exclusive writer locks for session transcripts and coordinates transcript writes with session execution, shutdown, resume, and background-worker handoffs. It also updates replay handling and adds tests and documentation for the persistence and ownership behavior.
The native binding and SessionWriter add exclusive transcript locks. SessionRecorder uses writer ownership for transcript creation, appending, forking, and closure. loadSession repairs an incomplete tail only when a writer is supplied.
Session and tool operations flush persistence around execution and completion. Session shutdown and history changes wait for pending work. Persistence failures block further session work. Replay ignores historical tool_started events for live tool indicators.
Resume paths accept and validate a SessionWriter. Background attach and detach pass writer ownership between the worker and foreground session. Worker shutdown closes persistence, and detach failure attempts foreground recovery when persistence has no error.
xal-sh/xal#82: Both changes use the session recorder and resume paths; PR #82 persists and restores prompt-state records through those paths.
xal-sh/xal#65: Both changes update the turn-end event path and persistence of records associated with tool execution.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 44f0b
Two small edge cases remain. An interrupt that arrives while a tool-start record is being saved can drop results from sibling tools in the same batch. Resuming a background session from the picker shows a less helpful error message. Neither blocks the core session ownership behavior, so they are worth fixing but not merge-blocking.

Explanation
The title "Guard session ownership and acknowledge persistence before side effects" matches the main change. The PR adds single-writer ownership for saved sessions through a new SessionWriter and native session lock, and it makes persistence acknowledgements happen before tool execution and turn completion. The changeset includes the ownership guard (sessions/ownership.ts, native session_lock.rs, bg/attach.ts, resume paths) and the persistence flushes (session.ts, tool-runner.ts, turn.ts). The title is specific, is one sentence, and avoids file lists and vague terms.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 18 functions across 32 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- Around line 206-215: Check the background lease in the resume flow before
SessionWriter.acquire so a session held by a background worker produces the
existing “bg attach” message instead of failing during writer acquisition. Limit
the early check to cases without an existing options.writer or
backgroundWorkerId, and retain the post-acquisition lease check for changes that
occur afterward. Keep writer transfer within the existing cleanup path and add a
test for the message while the worker holds the writer.

user before execution.” result as the existing pre-execution abort path. Keep
persistence failures propagating from flushPersistence().

CodeRabbit triage: both actionable inline findings were reproduced, fixed, and regression-tested in a88283b. The default docstring-coverage warning is intentionally not applied: AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md explicitly prohibit code comments. User-facing ownership, persistence, recovery, and limitations documentation is updated in docs/. Independent final-delta review and fresh CI are running before merge.
