fix(ci): build manual PDFs with the runner's Chrome - #571
Conversation
…n demand The pdf job hung with no output until the 30-minute job timeout on the v2026.10.1 and v2026.10.2 releases, so no manual PDF was attached by CI. The same pagedjs-cli 0.4.3 command finishes in 15 to 30 seconds on macOS with both the bundled Chrome 115 and the current Chrome, under Node 22 and Node 24, so the failure is specific to the Ubuntu 24.04 runner, where puppeteer's downloaded Chrome cannot use its sandbox. - Use the preinstalled google-chrome and skip the Chrome 115 download. - Pass --no-sandbox; the job renders only this repository's manuals. - Wrap each manual in a 10-minute timeout and a 5-minute pagedjs-cli timeout, and check that each PDF is not empty, so a hang fails fast. - Add a tag input to workflow_dispatch that attaches the PDFs to an existing release, validated against the vYYYY.MM.N pattern.

📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to Tagged runs now build and upload PDFs for the same release revision, and untagged runs retain their selected revision. The workflow changes appear ready to merge; run the requested tagged dispatch afterward to attach PDFs to v2026.10.2. Pre-merge checks |

Build PDFs from the selected release tag before replacing its assets.
When an operator dispatches this workflow on main with an older release tag, checkout builds PDFs from main. gh release upload --clobber then replaces the older release’s PDFs with content from a different revision. For tagged dispatches, check out the validated release tag before the audit and PDF builds, or reject a dispatch whose ref does not match RELEASE_TAG. GitHub documents that dispatch runs use the selected ref, not an input named tag. (docs.github.com)

A dispatched run with a tag built the PDFs from the selected ref and attached them to the tag's release, so the assets could come from a different revision than the release. - Check out inputs.tag in the audit and pdf jobs, so the audit and the PDFs use the release revision. Empty for release, push and pull_request events, which keep their default checkout. - Validate the tag as the first audit step, before any checkout. - Drop the tag pattern check from the upload step, so release events keep attaching for any tag name, as before.
