fix(site): clean manual URLs and break-ui follow-ups - #567
Conversation
/manuals and /manual-<id> returned 404, while every other page has a clean URL and a permanent redirect from its .html form. - vercel.json: one rewrite and one redirect cover manuals.html and every manual-<id>.html, so a new manual needs no config change. The manuals pages join the revalidated page headers. - Build order: build-manuals now runs before clean-urls, so manual links and canonical URLs are published without .html. - header.js adapts manual links like the other pages, including in static previews. - serve-agent-site.js and test_clean_urls.js accept the :page pattern in rewrites, so the clean URL tests cover the manual pages when they are built.

The desktop phase modal cut every lesson name to one line, so long names that differ near the end looked alike. Names now wrap and clamp at two lines, and the title tooltip still carries the full name. The narrow modal keeps showing the whole name, and the search palette keeps one line.
The status filter offered Complete and Planned whatever the data held, so In progress was missing when ROADMAP.md marks a lesson in progress, and Planned returned nothing when every lesson is complete. The options now come from the statuses present in the lessons, in workflow order, with unknown statuses listed by name after them.
Terms that start with a digit or a non-Latin letter land in the # group, which had no button in the letter list and no way to jump to it. A # button now follows Z when the glossary has such a term, and it jumps to the group like the letter buttons do.
On the certification, project and assessment pages the GitHub chip carries a visible GitHub label, which pushed the logo into its ellipsis and shrank the logo mark to nothing at 320px. Below 481px the label is now visually hidden, as on the other pages where the chip shows only the star count, and the logo mark no longer shrinks.
With no phases in the data the roadmap said the data could not be loaded and asked for a rebuild. An empty phase list now says that no phases are published yet and sets the summary counts to zero. Missing or invalid data keeps the load error, and both messages share a padded style.
build.js already rewrote "N lessons" and "N phases" in a few pages,
which left gaps. The sponsors page, rendered from SPONSORS.md, and the
about page kept 523 and 20 by hand, and the home description phrase
"523 free, open-source lessons" never matched. The count sync now
covers about.html and SPONSORS.md, runs before sponsors.html is
rendered from it so the page and its source agree, matches counts
across line breaks, and takes the home phrase.
The catalog intro is a translation key, so a new phase would rewrite
its English text and orphan eleven pinned translations. The key now
holds a {n} placeholder: ui-i18n.js matches the page text with any
number in that place and carries the number into the translation, the
interface translator shields {n} like a file name, and test_ui_i18n.js
reads {n} as any count when it checks for orphaned keys.
With the root font size doubled, 15 of the 18 scanned pages scrolled sideways at 320px or 1280px, and the home aside, display headings and route buttons spilled out of their boxes even with today's data. - Display type: every heading clamp with a floor of 1.5rem or more, and the base h1 to h3, now floors at min(Arem, 5A vw). Both values match at 320px with default text, so nothing moves at default size; with larger text, display type stops at its 320px size relative to the viewport. Headings also break a word that is longer than the line. - The home contents list on phones caps its numeral, name and count the same way. - Masthead and course route buttons, footer links, breadcrumbs, project filters, the catalog search and filters, certification card heads and the certification grids on phones wrap or shrink instead of overflowing, and the assessment question card no longer grows to its longest word. - Long links, file paths and the thought experiment question break inside a word only when nothing else fits. At default text size the one visible change is the home "Explore certifications" button at 320px, whose label ran past its border and now wraps.
In the Arabic interface English text took the page direction, so
sentence punctuation landed on the left ("doing." read ".doing"),
Roman numerals read ".IX", and "12-lesson path · 780 minutes" read
"780-12". The data and lesson text are English, so they now read as
English inside the right-to-left chrome.
- While a right-to-left language is active, ui-i18n.js gives the
element of any eligible English text that the dictionary did not
translate lang="en" dir="ltr". That covers the curriculum data the
pages render (contents, phase modal, catalog rows, glossary entries,
roadmap inspector, search palette) and English copy that has no
translation key, such as the learning paths content. Translated
chrome keeps the page direction, flex and grid containers are left
alone so component layout still mirrors, and switching language
removes the marks.
- Lesson names, phase titles and descriptions, palette results and
glossary terms carry lang="en" dir="ltr" in their markup, and the
contents numeral is always left to right, so "0." reads correctly.
- Catalog status options share an addOption helper with the phase
select, are collected in the existing row loop, and sort
alphabetically, which is already workflow order.
- Glossary groups sort by the alphabet array, so # comes last from
one source.
- The roadmap empty state reuses renderHeroStats and escapes its
message.
- syncCounts uses one lookahead regex and SPONSORS_SOURCE_PATH.
- ui-i18n.js decides an element's direction from all of its text
nodes in one place, skips text inside an existing English island,
and needs no sweep on language change. The {n} lookup collects
numbers in one pass, and the orphaned-key test reuses the exported
NUMBER pattern.
- Lesson names, phase titles and descriptions, palette results and
glossary terms go back to dir="auto". A phase such as "Model
Context Protocol (MCP)" is also a translation key, and a fixed
lang="en" dir="ltr" would hold its Arabic translation left to
right. The runtime marks the untranslated ones.
- Seven heading clamps whose floor could never bind are written as
min(). The wrap rules for the sponsors page, the about page and the
assessment question sit on their containers, and the hidden GitHub
label matches the other visually hidden rules.
- header.js loads the changed ui-i18n.js under a new version key.
On a 320px phone the manuals index was 350px wide and the Docker Sandboxes manual 418px wide, so both scrolled sideways. - The index card and the cover print the first 7 characters of the pinned commit, as the A2A manual does. The colophon keeps the full commit. - The manual body wraps a long unbreakable string, such as a socket path or a commit hash, instead of letting it run past the column. Code spans already did. - The index pin line wraps as a guard for long subjects and versions.

- Around line 133-135: Update markDirection to apply lang="en" and dir="ltr"
only to the untranslated direct text, such as by wrapping those text nodes in an
English-marked element, rather than setting the attributes on their parent.
Leave translated descendants outside that English direction island so they
retain their own language and direction.

markDirection set lang="en" dir="ltr" on the parent of untranslated English text, so a translated child inside that parent inherited English and left-to-right. - An element whose whole text is untranslated English is still marked as one block, so English paragraphs keep their left alignment on right-to-left pages. - In a mixed element, only the untranslated English text nodes are wrapped in a <bdi lang="en" dir="ltr">, and translated children stay outside. - When a translated child appears later inside a marked block, the mark is removed and the English text is wrapped again. - Switching away from a right-to-left language removes every mark and wrapper. - UI_I18N_VERSION is bumped so browsers load the new ui-i18n.js.
Summary
Two follow-ups to the clean URL work in #514 and the worst-case data pass in #566.
Clean manual URLs
/manuals and /manual- returned 404 in production, while every other page answers at its clean URL and redirects from its .html form.

Left for later: the generated manual index still scrolls sideways at 320px (with or without larger text) and has its own stylesheet; the "4 core paths · 6 career routes" eyebrow describes static page content and keeps its literal key; Persian now shows the catalog count in Latin digits.
