docs(docs): update the Prisma ORM 8 pages for 8.0.0-rc.23 - #8770
Prisma ORM 8.0.0-rc.23 changes how a PostgreSQL schema names its scalar types. A schema the docs showed as
code VarChar(12)
now reads
code String(storage: varchar, length: 12)
and the old name reports PSL_DEPRECATED_SCALAR_NAME. This PR brings every Prisma 8 docs page up to the 8.0.0-rc.23 release notes. Each claim was checked against the notes, the app upgrade recipe, or the source at release/8.0.0-rc.23. The v6/ and v7/ trees are untouched.
Merge this only after 8.0.0-rc.23 is on npm under latest. Until then pnpm lint:versions fails on the five rc.23 references.
Versions
orm/release-status.mdx: @prisma/orm-postgres and @prisma/orm-mongo at 8.0.0-rc.23, prisma at 8.0.0-rc.31, checked on 6 November 2026.
8.0.0-rc.22 → 8.0.0-rc.23 in vercel.mdx, solid-start.mdx, advanced-postgresql.mdx, from-scratch.mdx, supported-databases.mdx, and both upgrade guides' "written as of" lines.
Seven PostgreSQL scalar names deprecated, two column helpers renamed
psl-syntax.mdx, typescript-schema-builder.mdx, and old names replaced in money.mdx, data-modeling/index.mdx, relational-databases.mdx, coming-from-prisma-orm-7.mdx, contract-infer.mdx, db-verify.mdx, migration-plan.mdx, from-sql-orms.mdx, add-to-existing-project/postgresql.mdx, orm-client.mdx, sql-query-builder.mdx. No page used int8Column or numericColumn.

Entries with no page
The MySQL stream fix: no page covers MySQL streaming.
The extension-author API changes: no page documents those APIs.
The rowsHoldingValue change: only the generated error reference mentions it.
orm/reference/error-reference.mdx still lists RUNTIME.MULTIPLE_ORM_COPIES. That page is generated, so the error-reference sync updates it.
supported-databases.mdx links the MySQL example at the v8.0.0-rc.23 tag, which exists once the release is cut.
Checks
pnpm lint:links and pnpm lint:spellcheck pass. pnpm lint:code reports 3 fewer violations than main, and every new code block has a title. pnpm lint:versions fails only on rc.23 until it is latest.
Updated PostgreSQL type examples and guidance for storage, length, precision, and scale, including deprecated names and replacements.
Expanded migration guidance for renaming, converting, and deleting value-object fields, variants, and enum values.
Clarified MongoDB index naming, duplicate handling, migration checks, verification requirements, and upgrade steps.
Added guidance on PostgreSQL extensions, schema search paths, runtime configuration, validation, and contract requirements.
Updated MySQL preview documentation to cover ORM writes and supported behavior; clarified peer-dependency installation and SQLite date/time requirements.
Refreshed package-version examples and clarified package-copy compatibility and detection. Also updated MongoDB migration API guidance and Vercel deployment instructions.
Move the ORM library versions to 8.0.0-rc.23 and the prisma CLI pins to 8.0.0-rc.31, and update every Prisma 8 page the 8.0.0-rc.23 release notes change: MongoDB index names, the Prisma 6 MongoDB reader, pack extensions on the search path, mongo({ extensions }), supabase() and postgres() input checks, PostgreSQL convenience types and deprecated scalar names, temporal-polyfill for MySQL and SQLite, ORM writes on MySQL, value object migration statements, and the removal of RUNTIME.MULTIPLE_ORM_COPIES.

Setup and upgrade examples update documented package versions. The release page updates its version table and duplicate-copy guidance.
These are documentation gaps rather than code defects. The MongoDB upgrade steps can leave the migration ref stale, and the MySQL page omits two write prerequisites. Merge only after rc.23 is published under latest, as the PR description says.

- Line 89: Update the required-field sentence in the db update documentation to
clarify that temporary values are applied only to stored objects where the field
is missing or contains JSON null, and that existing non-null values are
preserved. Keep the examples and remaining guidance unchanged.
Review comments at
@apps/docs/content/docs/guides/upgrade-prisma-orm/mongodb.mdx:
- Line 137: Correct the v6 plain-index name example in the Index row of the
upgrade guide: change `User_email_key` to `User_email_idx`. Leave the rest of
the row unchanged.
- Line 118: Clarify the duplicate-index sentence in the Prisma ORM 6 MongoDB
schema guidance: the Prisma 6 reader compares the sort written in each index
definition, not its effective direction, so `@unique` and `@@index([email(sort:
Asc)])` are both kept. Preserve the existing guidance for indexes with matching
written sorts.
Review comments at
@apps/docs/content/docs/orm/contract-authoring/psl-syntax.mdx:
- Line 138: Update the PostgreSQL convenience-type explanation to specify that
only Int, BigInt, Float, and String support alternate storage column types,
while Decimal, Boolean, and Bytes are limited to numeric, bool, and bytea,
respectively; retain the explanation of BigInt’s as argument.
Review comments at
@apps/docs/content/docs/orm/contract-authoring/typescript-schema-builder.mdx:
- Line 156: Update the indexes guidance to state that two indexes with identical
keys and options but different names cause defineContract to fail with
CONTRACT.NAME_DUPLICATE. Tell readers to remove one index or give both the same
name so they merge, while preserving the existing guidance about other name
collisions.
Review comments at @apps/docs/content/docs/orm/extensions/using-extensions.mdx:
- Line 230: Clarify the `binding` documentation for `kind: 'pgPool'`: specify
that `pool` must be a `pg.Pool`, and that passing a `pg.Client` may be accepted
during construction but can fail later when role-bound operations acquire
connections. Preserve the existing description of other binding options.
- Around line 230-234: Move the detailed `supabase(...)` option forms and
validation behavior for `url`, `pg`, and `binding` from this guide to the
runtime reference, and replace that explanation with a link to the reference.
Keep the setup example in the guide.
- Line 104: Update the upgrade instructions around `npx prisma contract emit` to
explain that upgrades from before `8.0.0-rc.22` generate both the rc.22 marker
migration and the rc.23 migration, and require committing all generated files
under the extension’s migrations directory so `npx prisma db migrate` can
advance the existing marker. Clarify that upgrades from `8.0.0-rc.22` generate
only the rc.23 migration.
Review comments at @apps/docs/content/docs/orm/reference/migration-api.mdx:
- Line 568: Update the dropIndex explanation to state that an unnamed call
checks both the derived index name and the keys. Clarify that dropping a
custom-named index requires passing its name and all index options, and remove
the conflicting statement that a call without options checks only the keys.
Review comments at
@apps/docs/content/docs/orm/reference/transactions-and-runtime.mdx:
- Line 362: Update the `extensions` row in the runtime options table to mark the
option as conditionally required and state that it must include the runtime of
each pack when the contract records extension packs.
- Line 349: Update the transaction and runtime guidance to say that the
`extensions` option must include the runtime for every pack declared by the
contract, not only packs listed under `extensions` in `prisma.config.ts`. Keep
the existing example and missing-pack error behavior.
Review comments at @apps/docs/content/docs/orm/release-status.mdx:
- Line 40: Update the duplicate-copy guidance in the release-status section to
clarify that `npm ls` and `pnpm why` may not detect a framework copy embedded in
a prebundled library without a runtime dependency declaration. Advise users to
inspect bundled dependencies and build configuration when those commands show no
duplicate but cross-copy value failures persist.
- Line 40: Update the duplicate-copy guidance in the release-status
documentation to make the pnpm command workspace-aware: tell users to run `pnpm
why @prisma/orm-framework` from the application directory, or use `pnpm -r why
@prisma/orm-framework` from the workspace root; keep the npm alternative
unchanged.
- Line 40: Qualify the duplicate-copy startup claim in the release guidance: the
CLI’s pinned toolchain may reject multiple framework copies with
RUNTIME.MULTIPLE_ORM_COPIES, even when the CLI and framework versions differ.
State that this limitation applies until the CLI uses a toolchain without the
guard; retain the separate-release and dependency-deduplication guidance.
- Around line 45-46: Update the release-status table only after both
@prisma/orm-postgres and @prisma/orm-mongo have 8.0.0-rc.23 as their registry
latest version; rerun the version check and verify the snapshot date before
updating the entries.
Review comments at @apps/docs/content/docs/orm/supported-databases.mdx:
- Line 29: Update the SQLite package peer-dependency guidance in the database
support documentation to tell pnpm users who have autoInstallPeers disabled to
add temporal-polyfill explicitly when it is not otherwise installed. Preserve
the existing installation guidance for npm, bun, and Yarn.
- Line 31: Update the MySQL write-result description in the supported-databases
documentation to distinguish `delete` from `create`, `update`, and `upsert`:
describe the latter as writing and then reading rows back within the same
transaction, and describe `delete` as reading the row before deleting it.

`8.0.0-rc.22` → `8.0.0-rc.23`
**Merging this PR ships the release.** The push to `main` carries the
new root `version`. The `Publish to npm` workflow then publishes
`8.0.0-rc.23` under the dist-tag `latest` and creates a pre-release
GitHub Release. See [`docs/oss/versioning.md`](docs/oss/versioning.md).
## What to review
- **Release notes:**
[`docs/releases/v8.0.0-rc.23.md`](docs/releases/v8.0.0-rc.23.md),
mirrored at the top of `CHANGELOG.md`. Seven breaking changes, then
features and fixes. The fixes include the removal of the
`RUNTIME.MULTIPLE_ORM_COPIES` check (#30961), which unblocks Prisma
Composer.
- **Upgrade guides**, assembled from the nine pending fragments:
- app:
`skills/prisma-8/upgrading/app/upgrades/8.0.0-rc.22-to-8.0.0-rc.23/instructions.md`
- extension:
`skills/prisma-8/upgrading/extension/upgrades/8.0.0-rc.22-to-8.0.0-rc.23/instructions.md`
- The originals moved unchanged to
`upgrade-instructions/releases/8.0.0-rc.22-to-8.0.0-rc.23/sources/`. The
`mongo-index-names` script is copied into the app guide, and its test
and five detection tests now read the published guides.
- Merges worth a look: the two MongoDB index fragments share one app
section, and the extension guide gives one call order for `nameIndexes`,
`mergeRedundantIndexes` and the builder.
- **Version bump:** every workspace `package.json`, the `workspace:`
specifiers in `pnpm-lock.yaml`, the `library_version` stamp in
`skills/prisma-8/SKILL.md`, and the Supabase contract version stamps.
Nothing else.
## Checks run
- `pnpm check:upgrade-coverage --mode publish --prev v8.0.0-rc.22 --head
HEAD`: passes.
- `pnpm check:release-notes --mode pr`: passes.
- `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile`: passes.
## Docs site
prisma/web#8770 updates the Prisma 8 pages for this release. It merges
after `8.0.0-rc.23` is on npm under `latest`.
Recipe links in the notes point at the `v8.0.0-rc.23` tag, which the
publish creates, so they fail link checks until then.

Prisma ORM 8.0.0-rc.23 changes how a PostgreSQL schema names its scalar types. A schema the docs showed as
now reads
and the old name reports
PSL_DEPRECATED_SCALAR_NAME. This PR brings every Prisma 8 docs page up to the 8.0.0-rc.23 release notes. Each claim was checked against the notes, the app upgrade recipe, or the source atrelease/8.0.0-rc.23. Thev6/andv7/trees are untouched. The release PR is prisma/orm#30962.
