blog(neon-vs-prisma-postgres): supabase db dump --remote for Supabase CLI v3, opening names the four alternatives - #8754
This post compares Neon alternatives that put app hosting and Postgres in one place: Prisma Postgres + Prisma Compute, Railway, Render and Supabase, on previews, idle cost, pooling, backups, pricing and exit path.
Changes
Comparison table, "Exit path" row, Supabase cell: now reads "Supabase's backup and restore guide (separate roles, schema and data dumps with supabase db dump --remote on CLI v3; changes to auth and storage are restored separately), or pg_dump over the direct connection for a Postgres host outside Supabase". Before, it read "supabase db dump or pg_dump" and linked Supabase's backups page. Supabase CLI v3 runs db dump against the local stack unless --remote is passed, so a bare supabase db dump no longer exports a hosted project, and a default dump holds the schema only, with no data and no custom roles. Supabase's backup and restore guide has the full procedure: the three dumps, the tables left out of the data dump, the restore order, and a separate restore for changes to the auth and storage schemas. The cell points to that guide rather than repeating its steps, like the other cells in the row. Supabase's self-hosted restore guide warns that a raw pg_dump brings Supabase internals that fail with permission errors when restored into Supabase, so the cell names pg_dump only for a host outside Supabase. "CLI v3" links Supabase's CLI v3 migration guide, which maps v2 --linked to v3 --remote, and pg_dump links Supabase's connection docs, which list pg_dump under the direct connection. The backups page the cell linked before sends readers to the CLI db dump reference, which still lists the v2 target flags (--linked, --local, --db-url) and not --remote.
Opening paragraph: the first sentence now names Prisma Postgres + Prisma Compute, Railway, Render and Supabase together, in the order the title and description use, where before it introduced Prisma alone and the other three in a second sentence. The sentence on what Prisma Postgres + Prisma Compute host now follows it, word for word as before, and the disclosure, the preview wording and the idle-cost line read as before.
"How we compared" note and the sources list: add the four Supabase pages with their check date.
updatedAt is 2026-11-08, and the update history has one new line.
https://supabase.com/docs/guides/platform/migrating-within-supabase/backup-restore: supabase db dump --remote=[CONNECTION_STRING] -f roles.sql --role-only, supabase db dump --remote=[CONNECTION_STRING] -f schema.sql and supabase db dump --remote=[CONNECTION_STRING] -f data.sql --use-copy --data-only -x "storage.buckets_vectors" -x "storage.vector_indexes"; the restore runs psql with --file roles.sql, --file schema.sql, then --file data.sql; "If you have modified the auth and storage schemas in your old project, such as adding triggers or Row Level Security (RLS) policies, you have to restore them separately."
Updated the article’s opening to name Prisma Postgres + Prisma Compute, Railway, and Render.
Added a November 8, 2026 verification of Supabase CLI, backup, restore, and connection documentation.
Clarified the exit paths: Supabase-to-Supabase backups use separate role, schema, and data dumps, with auth and storage changes restored separately; migration to an external Postgres host uses pg_dump over a direct connection.
Updated the article’s date, sources, and change history.

Summary
Hosting comparison and Supabase exit guidance apps/blog/content/blog/neon-vs-prisma-postgres-app-hosting-in-one-place/index.mdx
The opening names Prisma Postgres + Prisma Compute, Railway, and Render before Supabase. The article records a November 8 check of Supabase CLI v3 migration, backup and restore, self-hosted restore, and connection documentation. The exit-path guidance describes separate role, schema, and data dumps using supabase db dump --remote, separately restored auth and storage changes, and pg_dump over a direct connection for an external Postgres host. The source list and update history are updated.
The exit-path guidance now flags separate restoration of managed-schema changes. The existing destination-privilege caveat remains relevant, but no new merge-blocking risk is established.

Explanation
The title names a blog post (neon-vs-prisma-postgres) and two changes: the Supabase CLI v3 dump command in the exit-path cell, and the opening sentence naming the four alternatives. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm both changes are in the diff. The title is specific and accurate, though it lists two changes and is somewhat long at 113 characters, so it is slightly broader than a single main point.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Save the dumps to files.
Both commands write SQL to stdout, so readers who run them as shown have no files to restore. Add -f schema.sql and -f data.sql, as in Supabase’s backup guide. (supabase.com)

… CLI v3, opening names the four alternatives
Supabase CLI v3 dumps the local stack unless --remote is passed, so the Supabase exit-path cell now reads `supabase db dump --remote` or `pg_dump` over the direct connection, with links to the CLI v3 migration guide and the connection docs. The opening sentence now names Prisma Postgres + Prisma Compute, Railway, Render and Supabase in the order the title and description use.

…d data dumps
A default `supabase db dump` holds the schema only, so the Supabase exit
path cell now gives `supabase db dump --remote` for the schema and
`supabase db dump --remote --data-only` for the data, marks the flags as
CLI v3 (v2 uses `--linked`) and links Supabase's backup and restore
guide. The update history line, the "How we compared" note and the
sources list name the guide, checked 2026-11-06.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…l and data.sql
Both commands in the exit path cell now pass -f, as Supabase's backup and restore guide does, so a reader ends up with files to restore.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… and leaves out the Storage vector tables
The Supabase exit path cell now lists `supabase db dump --remote -f roles.sql --role-only` for custom roles next to the schema and data dumps, leaves `storage.buckets_vectors` and `storage.vector_indexes` out of the data dump and restores roles, schema and data in that order, as Supabase's backup and restore guide does. `pg_dump` over the direct connection is now named for a Postgres host outside Supabase, because Supabase's self-hosted restore guide says a raw `pg_dump` restored into Supabase hits permission errors. updatedAt, the update history line, the "How we compared" note and the sources list move to 2026-11-08 and add the self-hosted restore guide.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s backup and restore guide
The Supabase cell in the "Exit path" row listed each dump command and restore
step. It now points to Supabase's backup and restore guide, which has the full
procedure, and keeps what a reader needs to choose: separate roles, schema and
data dumps with supabase db dump --remote on CLI v3, changes to the auth and
storage schemas restored separately, and pg_dump over the direct connection for
a Postgres host outside Supabase. The 2026-11-08 update history line says the
same.
