sql-orm-client: run nested create() and update() through the mutation graph and remove the nested executor - #30734
Last slice of moving the SQL ORM client's writes onto the mutation graph (after #30680 and #30726). create() and update() with relation callbacks now build a graph too, and the nested-write executor (mutation-executor.ts) is removed. Every write method of the collection runs through the graph, and no statement is issued outside a node.
Changes
All under packages/3-extensions/sql-orm-client/src/ unless noted.
Translation (mutation-graph/nested-mutations.ts): each create, connect and disconnect on each relation layout becomes nodes and edges, appended in the executor's phase order: relations the parent holds the key for, the parent's write, relations the child holds the key for, many-to-many relations. Nested creates inside nested creates recurse.
New nodes and edges:
Assert throws its error when its input has no row (connect to a missing row).
Requires is an edge with no data: "run only if this source produced a row". In update() it gates every nested node that does not read from the parent, so update() matching no row resolves null and writes nothing, as before.
State nodes and state edges are created by the graph, one State per version of each table a statement reads or writes, including tables changed through CASCADE/SET NULL/SET DEFAULT foreign keys. Graph.sameState(a, b, table) tells whether two nodes see the same version of a table. Nothing uses it yet; it is for later optimisations such as merging identical lookups.
Graph API: the base Edge no longer carries column pairs. Data edges are added with addFilterDataEdge, addPayloadDataEdge, addRowsEdge and addRequiresEdge, which put the edge into the right slot (checked at compile time) and make its source return the columns it reads. new Graph(contract).
Table collector (packages/2-sql/4-lanes/relational-core): collectTables(ast) lists every table a statement names.
Clean-up: the executor is removed. The transaction helper moved to mutation-graph/mutation-scope.ts, and relation parsing to relation-mutations.ts. query-plan-mutations.ts is now mutation-statements.ts and keeps only the statement builders; the compile… functions without callers are removed.
Example, update() with three kinds of relation:
n1 Find users where id = 1 limit 1
n2 Find users where id = 2 limit 1 <- Requires n1
n3 Assert <- Rows n2, Requires n1
n4 Update users set name = 'Ada' <- FilterData n1 (id->id), PayloadData n2 (id->invited_by_id)
n5 Insert posts <- PayloadData n4 (id->user_id)
n6 Find tags where name = 'sql' limit 1 <- Requires n1
n7 Assert <- Rows n6, Requires n1
n8 Insert user_tags on conflict (user_id, tag_id) do nothing <- PayloadData n4 (id->user_id), PayloadData n6 (id->tag_id)
result: n4
Behaviour changes
Connecting an already-linked row on a many-to-many relation succeeds and keeps the one link, where the junction has a key over exactly its link columns; otherwise a plain insert. There is no check for duplicate criteria, and ORM.RELATION_LINK_DUPLICATE is removed.
Invalid nested input is rejected before any statement runs, including when update() matches no row (before, that call resolved null).
A relation field whose value is not a callback is rejected with ORM.RELATION_MUTATION_INVALID in create() and update().
Statements of nested writes carry the caller's annotations. Before, they were discarded.
create() with nested operations needs a primary key or unique constraint only when includes are requested, since the created row is no longer reloaded by identity.
Contract validation (packages/2-sql/1-core/contract): a relation whose link-column lists are empty is rejected. The authoring surfaces always emit at least one link column.
Why
The executor issued statements while walking the input, once per relation layout, and differed from the plain write paths in annotations, variant handling and returned selection. With the graph there is one write path, and its statements can be read and tested as a graph. Design: projects/nested-mutations/mutation-graph.md; this slice's contract: projects/nested-mutations/slices/graph-nested/spec.md.
Integration, run locally for the directories that reach the ORM's write methods: 477 files, 2,635 passed, 86 expected failures, none failed. New integration tests cover nested create() and update() on Postgres and SQLite, including update() matching no row. One existing test changed, for the decided connect behaviour. The whole integration suite was not run locally.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Nested relation creates and updates now run through mutation graphs instead of separate mutation execution and row-reload paths. The graph tracks table state and statement dependencies. Relation contract validation, AST table collection, mutation compiler exports, tests, and documentation also changed.

Relation inputs are parsed and translated into graph operations for create, connect, and disconnect paths. Collection create and update execute those graphs. Tests cover graph construction, runtime outcomes, transaction scope, and duplicate junction-link handling. Documentation describes multi-statement writes and revised error cases.

Mutation compiler functions and their re-exports were removed. Tests now construct mutation ASTs directly and check statement construction, returning projections, and namespace qualification.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 8fca9
Nested writes miss required annotations and can report misleading validation errors. Address these before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8adee
The inspected write paths retain row-scoping checks and transaction rollback behavior. No introduced security defect was substantiated, but concurrency guarantees and custom-runtime atomicity were not fully established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant exposure is database state reachable through the caller-supplied runtime and contract-defined parent, related, and junction tables. Related namespaces come from relation metadata; the inspected graph path does not introduce separate credentials. Namespace qualification alone should not be interpreted as tenant authorization.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed entrypoints retain mutation-lock and returning-capability checks. Relation criteria use model- and namespace-aware conversion, while graph payload and filter edges bind source values through ParamRef. Child disconnects retain parent filters, and junction deletes retain both parent and target filters.
observed — Data-edge registration adds consumed columns to the producer statement's RETURNING projection. Include read-back registers such an identity edge, so changing the graph result to the read-back node does not remove the parent identity needed by dependent writes.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Multi-statement graphs use the mutation scope. For transaction-capable runtimes, node execution and result shaping finish before commit; execution errors trigger rollback, and acquired connections are released in finally. Transactionless fallback and transaction-settlement handling already existed in the base executor, so they are not introduced concerns.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — For custom runtimes without transaction support, consider requiring an explicit caller-owned atomicity contract or rejecting multi-statement mutations. This would strengthen the pre-existing permissive fallback rather than remedy a demonstrated PR regression.

Update the nested-write annotation notes in the create() and update() docs.
The changed code at Line 1915-1920 passes annotationsMap to queryGraph. It does the same in update() at Line 2524. The PR objectives also say nested-write statements now carry caller annotations. The JSDoc still says the recorded annotations "are discarded", and that neither the nested statements nor the read-back query carry them. This text is now wrong in the public API docs for both methods. Callers who read it will not expect annotations such as cache keys to reach nested-write plans.
📝 Proposed doc fix (apply to both blocks)

Send child rows with relation fields to addCreateWithRelations.
hasRelationCallbacks only detects relation fields whose values contain callbacks. A nested child row with a non-callback relation value, such as comments: [], therefore reaches addChildInserts without parseMutationInput. This bypasses the ORM.RELATION_MUTATION_INVALID rejection applied by the top-level hasRelationFields route.
Use the same relation-field predicate for nested rows:

Use kind in the empty-criterion error of addFindAndAssert.
addFindAndAssert also runs for junction disconnect (Line 299). Take tags.disconnect([{}]). The error message then says "Nested connect" and meta.kind is 'connect'. Both values are wrong for a disconnect. The error also uses model instead of relation, so it differs from requiredCriterion (Line 410-414). Callers that branch on meta.kind or meta.relation get inconsistent data. Reuse requiredCriterion:

…n the mutation graph
relational-core gets collectTables, which gives every table a statement names, by namespace and name, from FROM, joins, derived tables, function source arguments, subqueries at any depth and a write's target.
The graph takes the contract. When a statement node is added, the graph gives it a state edge from the current State of every table its statement reads, and when the node writes, a new State for its target and for every table a CASCADE, SET NULL or SET DEFAULT foreign key changes from there, derived from the contract and cached per contract. sameState compares the State two nodes read for a table. Assert throws its error when its input has no row.
Edges no longer carry columns: FilterData, PayloadData and Rows share a DataEdge base with the column pairs. Data edges are added with addFilterDataEdge, addPayloadDataEdge and addRowsEdge, which widen the source and record the columns read from it; the result step asks the graph for those columns. The id add returns carries the node's input type, so an edge method only accepts a target with the slot the edge goes into.

…he mutation graph
create() with relation callbacks builds its graph with createGraph and runs it with queryGraph; the nested create executor is no longer called. The translation adds, in main's phase order, the relations the parent holds the key for (the related Insert, or a Find and an Assert raising ORM.RELATION_ROW_MISSING, with the key copied by PayloadData), the parent's Insert, the relations the child holds the key for (one Insert of the children, or an Update per connect criterion setting the parent's key by PayloadData), and many-to-many relations (target Insert or Find and Assert, then a junction Insert that skips an existing link when the junction has a key over exactly its link columns). Nested creates with their own callbacks recurse. Invalid input is rejected while the graph is built. With includes a final Find reads the parent.
Update takes PayloadData records into what it sets, and a junction Insert refuses two records that give one column different values with main's error. The relation definitions and input parsing move to relation-mutations.ts, shared with the executor until update() moves.

…he mutation graph; the nested executor is removed
update() with relation callbacks builds its graph with updateFirstGraph: a Find of the first matching row, the operations on relations the parent holds the key for, an Update by key (or the Find alone when nothing is set), then the operations on relations the child holds the key for and on many-to-many relations, and a final Find with includes. disconnect sets the parent's key to null, sets the children's key to null for the children of the parent (all of them, or those a criterion matches), or deletes the junction row found by both keys.
In update(), the parent's Find gates every node that reads nothing from the parent through a Requires edge: a node whose required source produced no row returns no rows without running, so an update() that matches no row resolves null and writes nothing. Statement nodes and Assert declare a requires slot.
A relation field that is not a callback is rejected in create() and update(); a junction connect skips an existing link with a conflict clause, so ORM.RELATION_LINK_DUPLICATE is removed. mutation-executor.ts is removed; withMutationScope moves next to the runner.

The junction Delete refuses two FilterData conditions that give one junction column different values, with main's ORM.RELATION_MUTATION_INVALID error, as the junction Insert does for its payloads; the check is shared in junction-write.ts.
query-plan-mutations.ts loses its compile functions and aliasTarget, which nothing calls any more, and is renamed mutation-statements.ts for the statement builders it keeps. toFieldName, which nothing calls, is removed, and the relation-mutation helpers only the translation uses are no longer exported. Docs no longer describe a reload after an ORM write. A pending extension upgrade entry declares no consumer change.

…-key action makes
A step that a delete reaches follows the referencing table's onDelete and a step an update reaches follows its onUpdate. cascade keeps the kind of the step it came from; setNull and setDefault make the referencing table's step an update, since its foreign-key column changes. Pass the caller's annotations to every nested statement.
126-133: Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Pass the caller's annotations to every nested statement.
The slice contract requires the caller's annotation map on every statement of an annotated call, including nested lookups, child writes and junction inserts. In runOn, each statement plan is built by buildOrmQueryPlan(contract, ast, ...) and gets no caller annotations. Only the orm-call activity carries them. A nested create() or update() with relation callbacks therefore sends statements that have no caller annotations. Middleware that acts per statement cannot apply those annotations to the nested writes.
Thread the annotation map from the create()/update() call into queryGraph and runOn, and attach it to each statement plan's metadata. The JSDoc at collection.ts (the terminal-method description that says statements "carry none") must be updated in the same change.
