Points added with a suppressed attribute form all reuse the first point's geometry (4.3.5) #8088

Description

@Patryk-Krawiec

What is the bug or the crash? What were your expectations and what actually happened?

On a point layer whose attribute form is suppressed after feature creation ("Hide form" in QGIS, featformsuppress=1), only the first added point lands under the crosshair. Every following tap on "+" saves a new feature with exactly the same geometry as the first one, even after panning the map to a different place.

Expected: each tap on "+" adds a point at the current crosshair (or GNSS) position, as it does when the form is shown.

What happens:

  • After the first point is added, the digitizing toolbar stays visible with the discard (X), remove vertex (-) and add vertex (+) buttons, as if a vertex were still pending.
  • Each further "+" creates a new feature (new fid) with an identical geometry, including Z and M values. On the map it looks like nothing is added, because the points are stacked on top of each other.
  • The stale geometry persists across sessions: after uploading changes, re-downloading the project from QFieldCloud and even switching the layer to a different file, the next "+" still reused the coordinates from the previous session. Tapping X resets it, then the problem starts again from the next first point.

With the form shown (featformsuppress=2) everything works as expected: 6 taps, 6 points in 6 different places.

We tested the same project with the layer as Point, PointZ and PointZM: the geometry type makes no difference, only the form suppression does.

Example of features created by panning the map between taps (changesets as received by QFieldCloud):

pk=167  Point ZM (10.00000000000000000 50.00000000000000000 0 0)
pk=168  Point ZM (10.00000000000000000 50.00000000000000000 0 0)
pk=169  Point ZM (10.00000000000000000 50.00000000000000000 0 0)

In the field, with the position locked to GNSS, the duplicates carry the same Z and the same M (GNSS timestamp) as the first point, e.g. 13 features with Point ZM (11.00000000000000000 51.00000000000000000 243.7333984375 1790763359000).

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. In QGIS, create a GeoPackage point layer (Point, PointZ or PointZM) and set Layer Properties > Attributes Form > "Hide form on add feature".
  2. Open the project in QField 4.3.5 (we use QFieldCloud, the layer has the "offline editing" cloud action).
  3. Select the point layer in the legend and enable digitizing mode.
  4. Tap "+": a point is added at the crosshair. The toolbar now shows X, - and +.
  5. Pan the map to another place and tap "+" again.
  6. A new feature is created, but at the coordinates of the first point (visible in the local changes list and in the uploaded changes).
  7. Change the setting to "Show form on add feature" and repeat: each point is placed correctly.

Version

4.3.5 - Danube (471940a v4.3.5)

Reinstall QField

  • I have a fresh install of the latest QField version, but the problem persists.
  • Problem can be reliably reproduced, doesn't happen randomly.
  • Problem happens with all files and projects, not only some files or projects.

    @Patryk-Krawiec , thanks for the report, could you attach a sample project that replicates this issue?

    @Patryk-Krawiec , fix in this PR (#8132). Within 20 minutes or so, you'll have Android APKs to test (nothing available for testing on iOS due to platform restrictions there). Thanks for the report.

    We should release another release by the end of this week. In the time being, I'd advise your team to turn suppress form off until QField 4.3.7 is out. Fortunately I see you are using QFieldCloud, that'll make rolling out that temporary project change super easy :)

    Out of curiosity, what kind of work are you guys doing with QField?

    Thanks for the fix @nirvn, much appreciated.

    We actually tried the workaround with the form turned on but tapping through it for every single point slowed the field work down too much. So for now we’ve rolled back to an older QField version where the suppressed form still works fine and we’ll move to 4.3.7 once it’s out.

    As for what we do. We’re agritech team from Poland working on soil sampling. Our samplers walk the fields and record GNSS points in QField, everything syncs through QFieldCloud and on the desktop we use QGIS with QFieldSync. So we rely on your tools pretty much every day ;)
