Python Environments extension causes significant UI lag/freezing in VS Code #1594

Closed

Description

@dinatonne
  1. Open VS Code with the Python Environments extension installed and enabled
  2. Open any Python file or workspace
  3. Observe UI lag/sluggishness (delayed typing, slow panel switching, unresponsive UI)

Expected: VS Code responds normally with no noticeable delay
Actual: VS Code becomes slow/laggy — likely caused by the Python Environments extension
scanning environments or running background processes

Additional info:

  • macOS (username: hilde)
  • Python 3.x installed via Homebrew/system
  • Lag appears consistently / after a specific action [edit to match your experience]

Thanks for reporting this. To help confirm whether the lag is coming from the Python Environments extension specifically, could you try the same scenario with the Python Environments extension disabled?

    1. Open VS Code.
    2. Go to the Extensions view.
    3. Find Python Environments (ms-python.vscode-python-envs).
    4. Click Disable.
    5. Reload the VS Code window when prompted.
    6. Open the same workspace / Python file where you see the lag.
    7. Check whether typing, panel switching, and general UI responsiveness improve.

If the lag goes away with Python Environments disabled, please re-enable it and collect the extension logs:

    1. Run Developer: Set Log Level... from the Command Palette.
    2. Choose Trace.
    3. Reload the window.
    4. Reproduce the lag.
    5. Open View → Output.
    6. Select Python Environments from the Output dropdown.
    7. Copy the relevant logs here, especially any environment discovery timing warnings.

If the lag still happens with Python Environments disabled, that would suggest the issue may be elsewhere in VS Code or another extension, but please let us know either way.
