Pip Install is not working on MAC #470

Closed

Description

@Utsavv

Describe the bug

mssql-python is not available on PyPI. Running pip install mssql-python (or installing it via requirements.txt) fails because no distribution has ever been published to the Python Package Index under that name.

Exception message:
ERROR: Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement mssql-python (from versions: none)
ERROR: No matching distribution found for mssql-python

Stack trace: N/A – pip resolver error, no exception traceback produced.

To reproduce

# With any pip-based workflow, e.g.:
# pip install mssql-python
# or requirements.txt containing:
# mssql-python>=1.0.0

# Attempting to import after a failed install:
import mssql # ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'mssql'

Or simply run:

Expected behavior
pip install mssql-python should resolve and install the Microsoft [mssql-python](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html) driver package, allowing [import mssql](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html) to succeed and enabling connections to SQL Server via [mssql.connect(<connection_string>)](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html).

Further technical details
Python version: 3.10.10
pip version: 22.3.1
SQL Server version: (e.g. SQL Server 2022)
Operating system: macOS 26.2 (Build 25C56), Apple Silicon (arm64)
Additional context

The package [mssql-python](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html) appears to be an internal or preview Microsoft driver that has not been published to PyPI. The project currently references it in [requirements.txt](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html) as [mssql-python>=1.0.0](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html). The standard publicly available alternative is pyodbc (via pip install pyodbc), which provides the same [connect()](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html)/[cursor()](vscode-file://vscode-app/Applications/Visual%20Studio%20Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/out/vs/code/electron-browser/workbench/workbench.html)/executemany() API against SQL Server using the ODBC driver. The Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server (msodbcsql18) must also be installed on the OS separately. ``````
