fix(theme-mermaid): serialize initialize and render calls to prevent empty SVGs (#12757) - #12923
If this is a code change: I have written unit tests and/or added dogfooding pages to fully verify the new behavior.
If this is a new API or substantial change: the PR has an accompanying issue (closes #0000) and the maintainers have approved on my working plan.
Motivation
On documentation pages with multiple Mermaid diagrams (especially complex flowcharts or sequence diagrams using asynchronous layouts like ELK), refreshing or loading the page concurrently mounts all diagram components.
Mermaid functions as a mutable singleton whose initialize(config) call modifies global shared site configuration used by subsequent render(id, text) invocations. When multiple diagrams mount simultaneously:
useMermaidRenderResult triggers renderMermaid in parallel across all diagrams.
Concurrent invocations of mermaid.initialize(config) and mermaid.render(id, text) interleave and race against each other.
This race condition causes in-flight renders to resolve with empty SVG outputs (""), leaving diagrams blank without triggering error boundaries.
This PR addresses the root cause by serializing mermaid.initialize and mermaid.render through an internal promise queue:
Sequential Execution: Each diagram's initialize and render lifecycle runs atomically in sequence.
Resilience: Queued renders continue executing even if an earlier diagram fails or throws a syntax error.
Unmount Protection: An isCancelled guard in useMermaidRenderResult prevents React state updates if a diagram component unmounts while queued or rendering.
Test Plan
Added comprehensive unit tests in packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/__tests__/renderMermaid.test.ts:
Verified that concurrent calls to renderMermaid are executed in strict serial order (initialize followed by render start/end for diagram 1, then diagram 2, etc.), never exceeding a concurrency of 1.
Verified that if an earlier diagram throws an error (e.g. invalid syntax), its promise rejects as expected while subsequent queued diagrams continue and render successfully.
Verified that temporary error DOM elements (#d${id}) are cleaned up safely when errors occur.
Ran complete test suite and linters:
npm test -- packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid (9/9 tests pass)
…empty SVGs (meta#12757)
Mermaid is a mutable singleton where initialize() sets global siteConfig.
When multiple diagrams on a page mount simultaneously, concurrent
initialize() and render() calls can corrupt internal state, leading to
empty SVG outputs on page reload.
This change:
- Serializes Mermaid initialize and render calls through a module-level queue
- Ensures queued renders continue even if a preceding diagram throws an error
- Adds an unmount cancellation check to avoid setState on unmounted components
- Adds unit tests verifying sequential execution and error handling

The Mermaid client serializes initialization and rendering through a shared promise queue. It continues queued work after a failed render and ignores render results after effect cleanup. Tests cover queue ordering, failure handling, and error-element removal.
renderMermaid is exported and queues initialization and rendering. A failed render rejects its caller without blocking later queued renders. Error cleanup checks for document before removing the error element. Tests verify ordering, queue continuation, and error-element removal.
Guard updates after effect cleanup packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/client/index.ts
The hook updates state after success or failure only while its effect remains active. Cleanup marks the effect as cancelled.

The change serializes Mermaid initialization and rendering while preserving queue progress after errors. No actionable merge-blocking regression remains; the custom-root ID limitation is pre-existing, and additional cleanup coverage is optional.

The title names the main change: Mermaid initialize and render calls are serialized through a queue to prevent empty SVGs. It also references issue #12757, which the linked issue confirms. The title is specific and matches the summary and objectives. Its length (88 characters) is longer than ideal, but the content is on-topic and clear.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#12757] Requirement 1: serialize Mermaid initialize and render calls. At head, renderMermaid in packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/client/index.ts chains each run on a module-level renderQueue (renderQueue.then(run, run)). Each run calls mermaid.initialize(config) followed by mermaid.render(id, text). Requirement 2: keep queued renders running after an earlier failure. renderQueue = result.catch(() => {}) prevents a rejected render from blocking later renders. Requirement 3: ignore stale results after effect cleanup. useMermaidRenderResult sets isCancelled in the effect cleanup and guards both setResult calls. Per-call config is passed through, so color-mode config changes are handled per diagram. Tests in renderMermaid.test.ts cover strict serial order with differing configs, failure recovery, and error-container removal for IDs containing colons (getElementById('d:r0:-0')). Limits: the tests mock Mermaid and do not verify ELK rendering in a browser. The incremental diff from the previous reviewed head could not be read, so the head file contents were assessed directly. The hook's isCancelled path has no direct test.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#12757] All changed code maps to the issue. The queue, initialize/render pairing, and error handling implement the serialization fix. The isCancelled guard implements the stale-result requirement. The getElementById change with its colon-ID comment addresses useId() IDs, which the issue's workaround approach implies. Exporting renderMermaid and adding resetRenderQueueForTest exist only to support the unit tests. The tests exercise these same paths. No unrelated behavior change was found in the read files. The incremental diff could not be read, so the assessment relies on the full head file contents and the supplied summaries.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Test cleanup when the error container is absent.
Add a test that returns null from getElementById and checks that renderMermaid preserves the original rejection. This covers the existing null-safe cleanup behavior.

Use selector-safe IDs for Mermaid renders.
If a custom React root uses a colon in identifierPrefix, the hook passes that colon to Mermaid. Mermaid’s selector lookup rejects, and the diagram shows an error. Generate selector-safe unique IDs before calling mermaid.render.
