Summary

Adds an optional Greek keyboard layout for the LilyGO T-Deck keyboard.

Features

  • Switch between English and Greek with Alt+Space
  • Greek lowercase and uppercase key mapping
  • Greek tonos support
  • Greek dialytika support
  • Combined tonos + dialytika for ΐ and ΰ
  • EN / EL layout indicator while a textarea is focused
  • Keeps the existing keyboard implementation unchanged for non-T-Deck builds

T-Deck keyboard handling

The T-Deck keyboard controller reports Alt+Space as a normal space in key mode, so the driver briefly switches to raw matrix mode only when a space is received to detect the Alt modifier, then immediately returns to key mode.

In Greek mode, the physical $ key is used as a dead key - it's almost on the same position like on standard greek keyboards

  • $ → (accent) tonos
  • Shift+$ → (diairetic marks) dialytika
  • both sequentially → (accent+diairetic marks) tonos + dialytika

Testing

Tested on a LilyGO T-Deck Plus with the Meshtastic t-deck-tft target.

Verified:

  • English / Greek layout switching
  • lowercase and uppercase Greek input
  • (accent) tonos
  • (diairetic marks) dialytika
  • (accent+diairetic marks) tonos + dialytika
  • no extra space generated by Alt+Space
  • layout indicator visibility and styling
  • successful pio run -e t-deck-tft build

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • T-Deck users can switch between English and Greek keyboard layouts with Alt+Space.
    • Greek input supports tonos and dialytika marks. When an accented character is unavailable, input falls back to the regular Greek character.
    • An EN or EL layout indicator appears while a text area is focused and matches the top-message label’s font and color.
    • In English mode, Shift+$ enters $; pending Greek diacritics are cleared when switching layouts or pressing Enter.

Walkthrough

The T-Deck keyboard driver supports English and Greek input, including Greek letter mappings, diacritic handling, and an active-layout indicator. Non-T-Deck builds retain the existing keyboard reader.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 3b204

The EN/EL indicator couples keyboard input to a particular view’s UI state. This is a maintainability concern rather than a demonstrated input failure; the change remains mergeable with that coupling understood.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in source/input/I2CKeyboardInputDriver.cpp: The ui.h include is now compiled only for T-Deck builds.
  • observed — Modified behavior in source/input/I2CKeyboardInputDriver.cpp: Adds T-Deck-only Greek layout state, an EN/EL focus indicator with style synchronization, UTF-8 encoding, and lowercase and uppercase key-to-Greek mappings.
  • observed — Modified behavior in source/input/I2CKeyboardInputDriver.cpp: Adds mappings for tonos, dialytika, and combined tonos/dialytika; unsupported key combinations return zero for fallback handling.
  • observed — Modified behavior in source/input/I2CKeyboardInputDriver.cpp: Adds raw-matrix reading that clears the output buffer, switches to raw mode, reads and drains available bytes, then restores key mode. A failed mode switch or a byte count other than five returns failure.

Explanation

The title "feat(t-deck): add Greek keyboard input and diacritics" matches the main change. The PR adds Greek keyboard input for the T-Deck, switching between English and Greek with Alt+Space, and tonos and dialytika dead-key diacritics. The raw summary and objectives describe the same work, so the title is fully related to the changeset.

Rebased on the latest device-ui/master and retested on a LilyGO T-Deck Plus with Meshtastic Firmware 2.8.2.d5f1619 Alpha.

t-deck-tft builds successfully and the Greek keyboard support is working correctly on hardware, including:

  • EN/EL switching with Alt+Space
  • lowercase and uppercase Greek input
  • tonos
  • dialytika
  • combined tonos + dialytika (ΐ, ΰ)
  • EN/EL layout indicator

No regressions observed in normal English keyboard input.

source/input/I2CKeyboardInputDriver.cpp: 1

118-170: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Remove the view-owned label dependency from the input driver.

source/input/I2CKeyboardInputDriver.cpp includes ui.h under T_DECK and reads objects.top_messages_node_label. The 320x240 view owns that label and writes it at TFTView_320x240.cpp:8050. The input layer therefore depends on view-owned UI state, which reverses the expected layer direction.

Expose the active Greek layout through a small accessor or callback. Let the view layer create, position, and style the EN/EL indicator. The input driver then handles key translation only.
