FRED Downloader GUI

Standalone Tkinter app for downloading, transforming, plotting, and exporting FRED series.

Features

  • Search FRED series by keyword
  • Add multiple series to a basket
  • Choose target frequency (NATIVE, D, W, M, Q, A) and aggregation (mean, last, sum)
  • Apply transform chains:
    • log
    • diff
    • pct_change
    • zscore
    • moving_avg
    • rebase
  • Preview metadata
  • Quick plot for selected series
  • Export merged dataset to CSV or Parquet

Requirements

  • Python 3.10+ (tested with 3.12)
  • FRED API key (free from St. Louis Fed)

Install packages:

pip install -r requirements.txt

Run

From this folder:

python run_fred_gui.py

API Key

You can provide your key in either way:

  • Enter it directly in the GUI top bar
  • Or set environment variable before launch:
set FRED_API_KEY=YOUR_KEY_HERE
python run_fred_gui.py

Project Layout

FREDDownloader/
  run_fred_gui.py
  requirements.txt
  src/fred_downloader_gui/gui/app.py
  src/fred_downloader_gui/fred_client.py
  src/fred_downloader_gui/transforms.py

Notes

  • NATIVE keeps the original frequency from FRED.
  • Resampling uses explicit modern pandas rules:
    • D -> daily
    • W -> weekly (W-FRI)
    • M -> month-end (ME)
    • Q -> quarter-end (QE)
    • A -> year-end (YE)
