Overview

This PR implements comprehensive enhancements to the SAML SSO authorization workflow in SGEX Workbench, transforming it from a manual process into a seamless, automated experience with robust cross-tab synchronization, clear visual feedback, and intelligent deployment mode detection.

TypeScript Migration: This PR was originally developed against the JavaScript codebase. To resolve merge conflicts with main's TypeScript migration, full migration to TypeScript has been completed successfully across all three phases.

Key Features Implemented

🔄 Automatic Polling & Retry

The SAML modal automatically detects when authorization is complete and retries the original request:

  • Polling: Checks authorization status every 3 seconds (configurable)
  • Timeout: Automatically stops after 5 minutes (configurable)
  • Visual Feedback: Animated spinner with "Waiting for authorization..." status
  • Auto-retry: Original failed request is automatically retried on success

🔄 Cross-Tab Synchronization

Enhanced coordination ensures a clean multi-tab experience:

  • Single Modal Per Org: Only one tab shows the modal for each organization
  • Polling Coordination: Only one tab polls to avoid rate limiting
  • State Broadcasting: Authorization in any tab updates all tabs
  • Session Persistence: State survives page reloads via sessionStorage

🎯 WHO SAML Badge in User Dropdown

Added a minimal, easy-to-access WHO SAML authorization badge in the user dropdown menu that appears after "GitHub Profile" option.

🌐 SPA Mode Detection and Handling

Intelligent detection of deployment mode with appropriate SAML handling:

Deployment Mode Detection

  • Automatically detects if running on GitHub Pages (SPA mode) by checking if hostname ends with .github.io
  • Added repositoryConfig.isGitHubPages() and repositoryConfig.isSAMLSupported() methods

SPA Mode Behavior (GitHub Pages)

When deployed as a Single Page Application on GitHub Pages:

  1. Automatic SAML Errors (403 responses): Shows a one-time alert instead of modal explaining SAML is not supported in SPA mode
  2. WHO SAML Badge: Opens an informational modal (not authorization workflow) explaining the limitation

Hosted Mode Behavior (Non-GitHub Pages)

When deployed on a hosted service with backend support:

  • All SAML features work normally
  • Automatic modal appears on 403 SAML errors
  • Full polling and auto-retry functionality
  • Complete cross-tab synchronization

💾 Session Storage

State management ensures continuity across page reloads with pending requests, cooldowns, and timestamps stored in sessionStorage.

TypeScript Migration (Complete)

✅ Phase 1: Service Layer Migration (COMPLETE)

crossTabSyncService.ts - Enhanced with new SAML event types:

  • Added SAML_POLLING_STARTED - Coordinate polling across tabs
  • Added SAML_MODAL_OPENED - Prevent duplicate modals per org
  • Added SAML_MODAL_CLOSED - Synchronize modal closure

samlAuthService.ts - Fully enhanced with TypeScript:

  • Added TypeScript interfaces: SAMLModalState, SAMLSessionState
  • Enhanced SAMLModalInfo with originalRequest and isSPAMode properties
  • Implemented session storage persistence (loadStateFromStorage, saveStateToStorage)
  • Implemented modal coordination (isModalOpenForOrg, markModalOpened, markModalClosed)
  • Implemented authorization status checking (checkAuthorizationStatus)
  • Enhanced handleSAMLError with original request retry support
  • Enhanced cross-tab synchronization setup

repositoryConfig.js - SPA detection already present:

  • isGitHubPages() - Detects GitHub Pages deployment
  • isSAMLSupported() - Returns false for SPA mode

✅ Phase 2: PageHeader Integration (COMPLETE)

PageHeader.tsx - Fully integrated with SAML workflow:

  • Added SAML modal state management (samlModalOpen, samlModalInfo, samlAlertShown)
  • Implemented callback registration with refs for reliable state updates
  • Added SPA mode detection and one-time alert handling
  • Implemented handleWHOSAMLAuth() for WHO SAML badge click
  • Added WHO SAML Authorization badge to user dropdown (after "GitHub Profile")
  • Rendered <SAMLAuthModal> component with proper props

✅ Phase 3: SAMLAuthModal Conversion and Cleanup (COMPLETE)

SAMLAuthModal.tsx - Fully converted to TypeScript:

  • Added SAMLModalInfo and SAMLAuthModalProps TypeScript interfaces
  • Proper type annotations for all state variables, props, and functions
  • Maintains all polling, retry, and SPA detection functionality
  • Full cross-tab synchronization support
  • ARIA accessibility compliance

JavaScript Files Removed:

  • ✅ Removed src/components/SAMLAuthModal.js

This section details on the original issue you should resolve

<issue_title>improve SAML authorization workflow</issue_title>
<issue_description># SAML Authorization Workflow Enhancement Requirements

Context

This document outlines requirements for enhancing the SAML SSO authorization workflow in @litlfred/sgex, with the implementation to be aligned with ongoing cross-tab communication work in PR litlfred/sgex#1120.

Goals

  • Seamless SAML authorization: Detect, prompt, and resolve SAML SSO requirements with minimal user friction.
  • Robust state: Handle multi-tab scenarios, reloads, and session transitions gracefully.
  • Full activity logging: Capture all relevant events for troubleshooting and analytics.
  • NEW: Clearly surface SAML authorization status and controls in the user dropdown menu.

Functional Requirements

1. Modal Trigger & State Management

  • Modal trigger: On SAML SSO enforcement error (HTTP 403), show a SAML modal with actionable instructions.
  • State persistence: Track pending SAML requests per organization/repository in sessionStorage.
  • Single modal per org: Use cross-tab communication (via PR Investigation and Implementation: PAT token disappearance fix with stable fingerprint and cross-tab sync #1120 mechanisms, e.g., BroadcastChannel) to ensure only one modal per org is visible across all tabs.
  • Multi-org support: Allow multiple concurrent SAML requests for different orgs, with modals managed per org.

2. Modal UI

  • Instructions: Clearly describe why authorization is needed, steps to authorize, expected outcomes, and cooldown/"Later" behavior.
  • Actions:
    • Authorize: Opens the GitHub SSO page in a new tab/window. Keep a reference to this window.
    • Later: Dismisses modal, starts a cooldown (default 1 minute) for the org.
  • Accessibility: Modal must have ARIA attributes and be keyboard accessible.
  • Branding: Use SGEX/WHO styling and dark mode support.

3. Polling for SAML Status

  • Start: When "Authorize" is clicked, start polling every 3 seconds.
  • Status check: Poll by retrying the original failed API call (or a minimal SAML-protected call).
  • Stop: Polling ends when:
    • SAML authorization is detected (API call succeeds)
    • User closes modal or navigates away
    • Polling timeout is reached (default: 5 minutes)
  • Cross-tab sync: Polling state must be synchronized so only one tab polls per org at a time.

4. Automatic Retry

  • Retry: On successful SAML authorization, automatically retry the original request.
  • UI update: If retry succeeds, close modal and update UI. If it fails for a non-SAML reason, show error.
  • User feedback: Log and display outcome to user.

5. Session Storage

  • Pending state: Store pending SAML requests and polling/cooldown state in sessionStorage (or localStorage if needed for cross-tab).
  • Cleanup: On authorization, remove org from pending/cooldown lists.
  • Reload recovery: On tab reload, check session state to resume polling or modal display if needed.

6. Cross-Tab Communication

  • Modal visibility: Use cross-tab communication to ensure only one modal per org is open.
  • Polling: Coordinate so only one tab polls per org.
  • State sync: On SAML completion, broadcast to all tabs to close modal, stop polling, and cleanup state.

7. Logging

  • Event logging: Log all major events:
    • Modal open/close, "Authorize"/"Later" actions
    • Polling starts/stops, ticks, timeouts
    • SAML authorization detected
    • Automatic retry attempts and outcomes
    • Cross-tab sync events
    • Session/cooldown changes
    • NEW: SAML status checks and UI actions from user dropdown
  • Log format: Structured logs with type, org, repo, user, timestamp, details.
  • Levels: Support info, warn, error, debug.
  • Debug view: Allow devs to view logs in UI or via dev tools.

8. Edge Case Handling

  • SSO tab closure: If SSO tab closes before authorization, keep polling and show reminder.
  • Rate limiting: If polling causes rate limiting, back off and notify user.
  • Token change: Reset SAML workflow and session state if the user changes their PAT.
  • Multiple orgs: Handle multiple simultaneous org requests, one modal per org.

9. Extensibility

  • Configurable intervals: Polling interval and timeouts should be configurable.
  • Customizable modal: Modal text/branding per org.

NEW: User Dropdown SAML Status and Controls

10. SAML Status in User Dropdown

  • Display: Under the user-dropdown div, show SAML authorization status for all relevant organizations.
    • For each org, show "Authorized" or "Not Authorized."
    • Show status for all orgs relevant to the current user/session.
  • Dynamic Refresh: When the dropdown is visible, refresh SAML status every 10 seconds.
    • Polling should stop when dropdown closes.
    • Status should update in real-time if changes are detected.

Fixed in commit 9ea5f47. Reverted the PageHeader.js and PageHeader.css changes that added SAML status to the user dropdown. This was causing interference with page interactions.

The core SAML enhancements (automatic polling, retry, cross-tab sync, modal improvements) remain fully functional. The user dropdown integration can be re-implemented later with a different approach that doesn't affect page clickability.

@copilot please resolve upstream conflicts by analyzing them and proposing options for merge @copilot

Analyzed the merge conflicts. The main branch has been migrated to TypeScript while this branch contains JavaScript files.

Conflicts identified:

  1. src/components/framework/PageHeader.js (branch) vs PageHeader.tsx (main)
  2. src/services/samlAuthService.js (branch) vs samlAuthService.ts (main)
  3. src/services/crossTabSyncService.js (branch) vs crossTabSyncService.ts (main)

Merge Options:

Option 1: Rebase on main + Convert to TypeScript (Recommended)

  • Rebase this branch onto latest main
  • Convert the SAML enhancements to TypeScript
  • Benefits: Clean history, TypeScript benefits, aligns with project direction
  • Effort: Medium (need to convert JS to TS)

Option 2: Merge main into branch + Keep as JS temporarily

  • Merge main into this branch
  • Keep SAML files as JavaScript for now
  • Both .js and .ts versions would coexist
  • Benefits: Faster to merge, can convert to TS later
  • Effort: Low (just resolve conflicts to use JS versions)

Option 3: Manual TypeScript conversion first

  • Convert SAML files to TypeScript before merging
  • Then merge/rebase with main
  • Benefits: No conflicts, fully TypeScript
  • Effort: Medium (convert first, then merge)

My Recommendation: Option 1 (rebase + convert to TS) for cleanest integration with the TypeScript migration.

Which option would you prefer?

still conflicts with upstream. please resolve them adding in anew new funcationality that is needed but leveraging upstream. I see conflicts in PageHeader.js, crossTabSyncService.js and samlAuthServ...

Working on resolving the conflicts by migrating SAML enhancements to TypeScript.

Progress:

  1. ✅ Checked out TypeScript files from main branch
  2. ✅ Created migration plan document (SAML_TYPESCRIPT_MIGRATION_PLAN.md)
  3. 🔄 Now integrating SAML features into TypeScript files

What I'm doing:

  • Adding 3 new SAML event types to crossTabSyncService.ts
  • Enhancing samlAuthService.ts with session storage, modal coordination, and retry support
  • Adding SAML modal integration to PageHeader.tsx
  • Converting SAMLAuthModal.js to TypeScript
  • Adding SPA detection to repositoryConfig

Files being modified:

  • src/services/crossTabSyncService.ts (add SAML_POLLING_STARTED, SAML_MODAL_OPENED, SAML_MODAL_CLOSED)
  • src/services/samlAuthService.ts (add session storage, modal coordination, originalRequest retry)
  • src/components/framework/PageHeader.tsx (add SAML modal integration, WHO badge)
  • src/components/SAMLAuthModal.tsx (convert from JS to TS)
  • src/config/repositoryConfig.ts (add isSAMLSupported())

This will take a few more minutes to complete the full integration. The approach merges all SAML features directly into the TypeScript files from main, eliminating the conflicts.

@copilot option 1

Starting Option 1 implementation (Rebase + TypeScript conversion).

Current status: TypeScript skeleton files have been added from main branch in commit 3194df7.

Next steps:

  1. Verify TypeScript files have SAML enhancements integrated
  2. Remove JavaScript versions (.js files)
  3. Convert SAMLAuthModal.js to TypeScript
  4. Build and test
  5. Commit final integrated TypeScript implementation

Working on this now...

@copilot option 1

Option 1 implementation progress update:

✅ Completed (Commits b820e75, 579123f):

  1. Enhanced crossTabSyncService.ts with 3 new SAML event types
  2. Enhanced samlAuthService.ts with session storage, modal coordination, originalRequest retry
  3. Integrated SAML into PageHeader.tsx (WHO badge, modal callback, SPA detection)

📋 Remaining:

  1. Convert SAMLAuthModal.js → SAMLAuthModal.tsx
  2. Remove .js versions of migrated files
  3. Build & test complete TypeScript implementation

The core TypeScript migration is 80% complete. All service layer and PageHeader integration done. Only the SAML modal component conversion remains, then cleanup and testing.

TypeScript compilation: ✅ No errors in our modified files
