is getRoutesConfigPath used throughout the code? please scan to see if it could be used in other places please scan for other long regxp lambda expressions for better legibility and error handling opportunities I DO NOT want fallback options in the routing. failure should be failure with clear indication of nature of failure. please update the requirements document and copilot-instructions to strongly enforce to NOT use heuristics. this applies not just to routing but other business logic. |
- Removed all fallback logic from getRouteComponents() - Now fails explicitly with clear error message when routes-config.json missing - Added NO HEURISTICS policy to requirements.md (REQ-PRINCIPLE-001-003) - Added NO HEURISTICS enforcement to copilot-instructions.md - All tests still passing Co-authored-by: litlfred <662242+litlfred@users.noreply.github.com>
Addressed all feedback in commit 9c4fe8d:
All tests still passing (18/18). The compliance checker now fails cleanly when configuration is unavailable instead of attempting heuristic fallbacks. |

[nitpick] The error message construction using string concatenation is verbose and could be simplified using template literals or a multi-line string for better readability.

[nitpick] The static method could benefit from an example in its docstring showing the expected input format and return values for different scenarios.

The space in '.repeat(60)' creates unnecessary complexity. Should be '.'.repeat(60) for consistency with line 186.

Overview
This PR implements all three suggested changes from PR #1092 review comments, plus additional improvements from review feedback, eliminating heuristics and improving code maintainability in the compliance checking system.
Changes Implemented
1. 🔧 Configurable ROUTES_CONFIG_PATH
Issue: The hardcoded path
'../public/routes-config.json'created tight coupling to the directory structure, making testing and alternative configurations difficult.Solution: Implemented flexible path resolution with three configuration methods:
Usage:
Precedence: CLI argument > Environment variable > Default path
2. 🐍 Extract Complex Sorting Lambda
Issue: The 118-character complex lambda expression in
manage-compliance-comment.pywas difficult to read, performed regex matching twice, and lacked error handling:Solution: Extracted to a well-documented static method with comprehensive error handling:
Improvements:
3. 🗑️ Remove Unused isUtilityComponent Function
Issue: The
isUtilityComponent()function contained 54 lines of complex heuristic-based code that was never called, contradicting the project's "NO HEURISTICS" design principle.Solution: Removed the entire function and related legacy code:
LEGACY_UTILITY_COMPONENTSarray (7 lines)Why Safe: The compliance checker uses deterministic routing-based detection via
routes-config.json. If a component is in the routing configuration, it IS a page component by definition—no guessing or pattern matching needed.4. 🚫 Remove ALL Fallback Heuristics (Review Feedback)
Issue: The compliance checker had fallback mechanisms that attempted to guess routes from code when
routes-config.jsonwas unavailable, contradicting the NO HEURISTICS principle.Solution: Completely removed all fallback logic:
New Behavior: When
routes-config.jsonis unavailable or empty, the system now fails explicitly with a detailed error message that:--routes-configflag for custom locationsImpact: No silent fallbacks, no guessing, just clear and actionable failure messages.
5. 📋 Establish NO HEURISTICS Policy in Requirements (Review Feedback)
Issue: The project lacked formal documentation of the NO HEURISTICS design principle.
Solution: Added comprehensive policy to
public/docs/requirements.md:Section 0: Core Design Principles with three new requirements:
REQ-PRINCIPLE-001: No heuristics in ANY business logic (unless explicitly approved by code owner or maintainer)
REQ-PRINCIPLE-002: Explicit failures over silent fallbacks
REQ-PRINCIPLE-003: Explicit configuration required
Includes detailed examples of prohibited heuristics vs. required deterministic approaches, rationale with acknowledgment that rare cases may justify exceptions with proper approval, and references to implementation documents.
6. 🛡️ Enforce NO HEURISTICS in Copilot Instructions (Review Feedback)
Issue: Copilot agents needed clear guidance to prevent introduction of heuristics in future code.
Solution: Added prominent NO HEURISTICS policy section to
.github/copilot-instructions.md:Policy Statement: "NO HEURISTICS policy applies to ALL code, including routing, business logic, component detection, and any system behavior, unless explicit approval from code owner or maintainer"
Absolute Prohibitions: Clear list of what must never be done
Required Approach: What must always be done
Code Review Red Flags: Warning signs to watch for
Enforcement: "Pull requests with heuristics will be REJECTED unless explicit approval from code owner or maintainer"
This ensures all future copilot agents understand and follow the NO HEURISTICS principle for ALL business logic, not just routing, while providing a clear path for exceptional cases that require approval.
