Hi, I'm Luis Guisado 👋

Senior Backend Engineer → Solutions Architect

10+ years in Software Engineering · AWS · Distributed Systems · Serverless · Software Architecture

I build cloud-native systems on AWS and increasingly contribute to architecture decisions, technical proposals, and solution design, bringing a strong hands-on software engineering background into that process.

About me

I am a Senior Backend Engineer with 10+ years of experience in software engineering, currently working primarily with AWS and distributed backend systems in banking and e-commerce.

My career has evolved from implementation-focused software development toward Solutions Architecture. Today, I work at the intersection of architecture and engineering: translating architectural designs into production systems, reviewing technical proposals, identifying risks, proposing alternatives, and helping teams apply architecture standards in real code.

My strongest professional experience is in backend engineering, AWS cloud-native systems, serverless and event-driven architectures, API design, infrastructure automation, and observability.

My goal is not only to know AWS services, but to understand why a design works, where it can fail, what trade-offs it introduces, and how implementation and operations affect the architecture.

What I bring to Solutions Architecture

My path toward Solutions Architecture starts from implementation depth rather than from diagrams alone.

Business & quality requirements
            ↓
Architecture decisions & trade-offs
            ↓
Cloud services and integration patterns
            ↓
Application & domain architecture
            ↓
Infrastructure, deployment & observability
            ↓
Production behavior and operational feedback

That background helps me evaluate architecture with implementation concerns in mind: maintainability, failure modes, consistency, deployment complexity, security boundaries, operability, and cost.

Experience & current focus

Production / professional experience

  • AWS & serverless: Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions, EKS.
  • Distributed systems: event-driven services, Kafka / Amazon MSK, asynchronous workflows and service integration.
  • Software architecture: DDD, Hexagonal Architecture, API-First / OpenAPI, REST APIs and modular backend design.
  • Infrastructure & delivery: Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes / EKS, GitHub Actions and CI/CD practices.
  • Security & observability: IAM, Cognito, Lambda Authorizers, CloudWatch, X-Ray and application metrics.
  • Languages / backend: TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, Java, Python and relational / NoSQL data stores.

Hands-on POCs & labs

  • AWS AppSync and GraphQL architecture.
  • AWS CDK and infrastructure modeling.
  • DynamoDB access-pattern and GSI experiments.
  • Transactional integrity, idempotency and concurrency patterns.
  • Event Sourcing, CQRS and Saga-focused architecture labs.
  • Agentic AI, LLM tool calling, Amazon Bedrock and human-in-the-loop experiments.

Currently deepening

  • Solutions Architecture and architecture trade-off analysis.
  • AWS Solutions Architect – Professional scenarios.
  • Resiliency and disaster recovery.
  • Multi-account governance and cloud networking.
  • Cloud security architecture.
  • AI-enabled architectures and applied GenAI.

Selected engineering & architecture projects

Most of my current public engineering work lives in Luis Guisado Cloud, my architecture and engineering lab.

Serverless order-processing architecture using API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB Streams, EventBridge and Step Functions, provisioned with Terraform.

Explores: Event Sourcing, CQRS, Saga compensation, asynchronous orchestration, state transitions, failure handling, observability and CI/CD.

Banking-oriented POC comparing API Gateway + Lambda (REST) with AWS AppSync (GraphQL) over the same DynamoDB data model using AWS CDK.

Explores: API trade-offs, over/under-fetching, resolver design, DynamoDB access patterns, GSI modeling and security implications.

Java 25 + Spring Boot banking API focused on atomic transactions, idempotency, deterministic locking, concurrency control and domain modeling.

Explores: transactional boundaries, correctness under concurrency, domain invariants and production-minded backend design.

Practical agentic AI experiment where an LLM inspects a Git repository through a constrained read-only toolset and proposes Conventional Commits.

Explores: tool calling, agent loops, grounding, guardrails and bounded AI capabilities.

AWS serverless + Infrastructure as Code lab using Terraform modules, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Step Functions, Lambda, IAM and Systems Manager.

Explores: reusable IaC, environment separation, service integration, API-First design and cloud delivery.

Educational backend built with Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, IAM and CloudWatch, connected to my technical content and learning material.

Explores: serverless foundations, API-First thinking, cloud resource design and developer education.

AWS & continuous learning

I currently hold:

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate
  • AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate
  • AWS Certified AI Practitioner
  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
  • AWS Community Builder

Current focus:

  • Preparing for AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional.
  • Deepening resiliency, disaster recovery, networking, multi-account governance, security and architecture trade-off analysis.
  • Pursuing a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence at Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI).

Technical writing & education

I document what I learn and build through practical content in Spanish, with the goal of making cloud and software architecture easier to understand without losing technical rigor.
