Run log: every run keeps its debug log next to its results file - #2853
Part of #2807 (step 1: the run directory and the always-on debug log).
What
The log has one sink, at error by default, so a normal run records almost nothing; the detail exists only if someone runs again with -l debug, and by then the cluster state is gone or the failure does not come back (the cnf_installation1 failure on the v2.3.0 tag run passed on re-run).
A second sink now always writes the run's log at debug level, whatever the console's level, into a directory named like the results file:
cnti/results/
cnti-testsuite-results-20261029-101500-123.yml # unchanged
cnti-testsuite-results-20261029-101500-123/
run.log # the run, at debug level
cnf_install-20261029-100912-456.log # the cnf_install before it
Console unchanged: -l, CNTI_TESTSUITE_LOG_LEVEL and CNTI_TESTSUITE_LOG_PATH still decide what a person watching sees. Trace (whole command outputs) stays on the console only, with -l trace.
Before the results file exists entries are held in memory (8 MB at most), then written to run.log. An invocation that never creates a results file (help, evidence, results_junit) drops them.
setup and cnf_install run in processes of their own, as the GitHub Action and the GitLab component run them: their log waits in pending/ in the results directory, and the next run moves it into its directory.
Per-test lines: entries logged while a test runs carry test=<name> (the Log context, set in the task runner); continuation lines of a multi-line message are indented, so a test's entries can be cut out exactly.
Size and retention: run.log stops at 50 MB with a line saying so; the newest 5 run directories are kept (CNTI_TESTSUITE_KEEP_RUNS), results files are never pruned; delete_results removes the run directories too.
The results file, its schema, the JUnit report, the exit codes and the evidence bundle are unchanged; the run directory is not in the bundle.
Note for the action and the component
testsuite-action uploads the whole cnti/results/ as its artifact, so from this release on the artifact carries the debug logs too, which is what #2807 wants for CI. So what debug level logs is narrowed here: the values of Helm's --set flags and the userinfo and query values of chart and values-file URLs are masked in the logged commands and values (Helm.redact_for_log, with specs). It splits the command into words as the shell does (Process.parse_arguments_posix), so quotes and backslash escapes carry nothing past the masking; --set-json and --set-literal keep only their leading key; an unclosed quote logs nothing from the first --set on, and the CNF's resources and containers are named in the debug lines instead of dumped whole, so no Secret data or env values. Kubectl outputs and the registry --creds command line are trace, which run.log does not keep. A write error (a full disk) stops the log, not the run.
Specs (points shard)
the line format: test=, indented continuation lines;
pending logs moved into the run directory; retention keeps the newest directories and every results file;
a named mock test (_debug_log_in_test) at console level error: its debug entry is in run.log with test=, not on the console;
a cnf_install that stops early leaves pending/cnf_install-*.log; the next run adopts it, and with CNTI_TESTSUITE_KEEP_RUNS=1 the run after that removes the older directory.
USAGE.md: "The run's debug log", CNTI_TESTSUITE_KEEP_RUNS, and a pointer from the results file section.
Each test run now saves a debug log alongside its results, including setup and installation logs carried over from the previous run.
Run logs include timestamps, severity, and test context, with older run directories pruned according to a configurable retention limit. Results files remain unchanged.
Bug Fixes
Sensitive values in Helm commands and URLs are masked in logs. Resource logs show concise summaries instead of full resource details.
Clearing results now also removes run logs and pending logs.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds always-on, per-run debug logs linked to results files. It adds testcase context, pending-log adoption, size limits, configurable retention, and cleanup. It also masks sensitive Helm command values and reduces resource details in Helm debug logs.
Changes: Per-run debug logging

Summary
Capture and format log entries src/tasks/utils/run_log.cr, src/tasks/utils/logging.cr, src/tasks/utils/cnf_manager/task.cr, src/tasks/workload/mock_task.cr, spec/utils/run_log_spec.cr
A synchronous backend formats and buffers log entries. Debug entries go to the run log independently of the console level. Task scopes add testcase context. Specs cover formatting and log capture.
Associate logs with result runs src/cnti-testsuite.cr, src/tasks/utils/cnf_manager/points.cr, src/tasks/utils/run_log.cr, docs/CODE_STRUCTURE.md, docs/USAGE.md, spec/utils/run_log_spec.cr
The CLI starts log handling, and result-file creation attaches the run log. Pending logs from setup and cnf_install are adopted by the next run. Documentation describes the log directory and format.
Retain and remove run logs src/tasks/utils/run_log.cr, src/tasks/cleanup.cr, docs/USAGE.md, spec/utils/run_log_spec.cr
Run directories are pruned to the configured count, which defaults to five. delete_results removes run-log directories and pending logs. Documentation describes retention and cleanup.
Mask and reduce Helm debug output src/modules/helm/helm.cr, spec/utils/helm_values_spec.cr, src/tasks/workload/compatibility.cr
Helm debug commands mask supported --set values and URL credentials. Resource logs report counts or concise identifiers instead of full resource data. The rolling-version test log reports the container name and optional image.
lfn-cnti/testsuite#2846: Both changes affect the single_task_runner exception flow. This change adds scoped log context.
lfn-cnti/testsuite#2840: Both changes affect Helm command logging. This change masks set values and reduces logged resource details.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review c04e1
Credential-bearing chart URLs can reach retained run logs, and passwords containing @ are only partly masked. Fix those exposures before merging; the test invocation also needs quoting for paths containing spaces.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to c04e1
Always-on debug logging can retain sensitive details that were previously hidden at the default console level. URL masking has verified gaps, and uploading the results directory can spread those details to additional readers. Credential handling and storage limits reduce, but do not eliminate, this risk.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new persistent-log boundary does not consistently exclude sensitive URL material. The userinfo pattern stops at the first @ and can consume query or fragment delimiters, leaving secret suffixes outside subsequent masking. Both command and values diagnostics use this control. A separate OCI info message logs the configured URL without it. Although raw command logging predates the PR, unconditional capture now makes these paths persistent even at the default error console level, and whole-directory uploads can expose them to artifact readers.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Supported exposure is the diagnostic data of invocations sharing the configured results directory and, conditionally, copies uploaded as artifacts. Exploitation requires sensitive input reaching logging and access to the resulting logs or copies. Any authority obtained from exposed credentials depends on those credentials; repository evidence does not establish broader tenant, environment, or cluster compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The two retained findings concern the same URL control. Matching ends at the first @ rather than the authority boundary, while allowing query and fragment delimiters inside the match. URL text can therefore leave secret suffixes in diagnostics before Helm accepts or rejects the command. The always-on backend then buffers or persists those diagnostics.
observed — The OCI deployment caller passes registry_url directly to pull_oci, whose info diagnostic interpolates it without masking. That message predates the PR, but its automatic persistence is new. A credential leak through this additional path is conditional on credentials being embedded in the URL; no deployed instance was established. Likewise, raw stderr persistence is reachable, but actual secret-bearing Helm stderr remains unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Concrete countercontrols include shell-word-aware masking for supported --set forms, query-value masking, suppression after unbalanced --set quotes, and separate registry passwords sent through stdin. Tests assert masking for ordinary URL credentials, escaped values, and JSON. These controls limit exposure but do not resolve the retained URL-boundary failures or sanitize separate info and stderr messages.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Pending adoption is a directory-wide sequential handoff, not an ownership-bound transaction: it moves every .log file without a creator identity or interprocess lock. Concurrent invocations can therefore misassociate preparation logs. Pending files are outside run-directory pruning until adopted or explicitly deleted. These are lifecycle limitations; a cross-tenant confidentiality impact is not established without evidence of shared-directory trust boundaries.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make confidentiality an end-to-end property of retained diagnostics: use authority-aware URL sanitization and apply a consistent policy to command, values, info, error, and exception entrypoints. Where independent runs share storage, bind pending logs to an explicit run identity or isolate their directories.

The title "Run log: every run keeps its debug log next to its results file" matches the main change. The PR adds a debug-level run log written into a per-run directory beside each results file, with pending-log adoption, retention pruning, and delete_results cleanup. The title is short, specific, and states the primary change. It does not cover secondary changes such as Helm value redaction, but it does not need to.

with -l debug, and by then the cluster state is gone or the failure
does not come back (the cnf_installation1 failure on the v2.3.0 tag

A second sink now always writes the run's log at debug level, whatever
the console's level, to a directory named like the results file:
cnti-testsuite-results-<timestamp>/run.log. The console sink is
unchanged: -l, CNTI_TESTSUITE_LOG_LEVEL and CNTI_TESTSUITE_LOG_PATH
still decide what a person watching sees. Trace (whole command
outputs) stays on the console only.
- Entries are held in memory until the run creates its results file
(8 MB at most), then written to run.log, which stops at 50 MB with a
line saying so. An invocation that ends without a results file drops
them.
- setup and cnf_install run in processes of their own, without a

and the next run moves it into its directory, so the install that
preceded a run is read with it.
- Entries logged while a test runs carry test=<name> (the log

indented, so one test's entries can be cut out exactly.
- The newest 5 run directories are kept (CNTI_TESTSUITE_KEEP_RUNS);
results files are never pruned. delete_results removes the run
directories too.
The log is kept and uploaded with the results, so what debug level
logs is narrowed: the values of Helm's --set flags and the userinfo and
query values of chart and values-file URLs are masked in the logged
commands and values (Helm.redact_for_log, which splits the command into
words as the shell does, so quotes and escapes carry nothing past it,
and logs nothing from the first --set on when a quote is not closed),
and the CNF's
resources and containers are named in the debug lines instead of dumped
whole, Secrets and env values with them. A write error (a full disk)
stops the log, not the run.
The results file, the JUnit report and the evidence bundle are
unchanged; the run directory is not in the bundle. USAGE.md documents
the directory, the format and the retention.
