Summary by Sourcery

Modernize the package toolchain and exports while adding comprehensive TypeScript definitions for JSON-compatible bodies.

New Features:

  • Add exported JSON shape, JSON-serializable, and supported body type definitions for TypeScript consumers.
  • Document installation, usage, API behavior, type exports, and migration guidance in the README.

Bug Fixes:

  • Preserve body classification behavior while safely inspecting callable pipe properties and supporting unknown inputs.

Enhancements:

  • Modernize the package for ESM and CommonJS consumers with consistent named and default exports.
  • Expand coverage for runtime classification, type constraints, body inspection behavior, and package entrypoints.

Build:

  • Replace the ts-node and tsup-based toolchain with native Node test execution and TypeScript-based builds for ESM and CommonJS output.
  • Adopt npm-based package management and modern linting, formatting, and hook tooling.

CI:

  • Update CI to Node.js 26 with current GitHub Actions, and add build, lint, formatting, type-checking, package-export checks, tests, and build artifact publishing.

Documentation:

  • Add comprehensive package usage and migration documentation.

Tests:

  • Add runtime and compile-time coverage for JSON types, body classification, and ESM/CommonJS package exports.

Chores:

  • Replace legacy configuration with Oxlint and Oxfmt configuration and tighten TypeScript compiler settings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added exported TypeScript types for JSON values and request bodies, including stream-compatible body types.
    • Added ESM and CommonJS package entry points. Both formats support named isJSON exports; the default export remains available.
    • isJSON accepts unknown inputs and returns false for falsy values, strings, buffers, and objects or functions with a callable pipe property.
  • Documentation
    • Added installation, usage, API, TypeScript, and migration guidance for @koa/is-json.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The isJSON API now accepts a typed JsonBody and narrows accepted values to Jsonifiable. The tests cover body categories and type narrowing. The package now uses Rolldown and TypeScript for builds and declarations. Its package exports and engine requirements are updated. CI now uses Node.js 26 and npm. The README adds package and project badges and a notice to replace koa-is-json with @koa/is-json.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a8037

The previously identified TypeScript and CI failures are addressed; no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a8037

The package contract and build change, but the review found no introduced security boundary bypass. The runtime classifier remains shallow, and downstream use and published build outputs could not be verified here.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed package contract can reach ESM and CommonJS consumers, but the available source does not identify downstream tenants, privileged callers, or sensitive sinks.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — An input object’s pipe getter can execute during classification. The base implementation also accessed that property, and the head tests preserve propagation of a throwing getter; the PR does not add a safe-inspection boundary.
  • observed — The CI workflow specifies read-only contents permission while building and checking the package; it shows no publishing or production credential step.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR modernizes the package around Node 26, native TypeScript/Node tooling, Rolldown-era dual-module packaging, and expanded CI validation, while adding exported recursive JSON/body types and comprehensive runtime, type-level, and package-entrypoint tests.

<issue_to_address>
**issue (bug_risk):** The CommonJS bundle declares named exports but then replaces `module.exports` with `exports.default`, so `require('@koa/is-json').isJSON` is undefined and the named `isJSON` export is lost for CommonJS consumers.

**Triggers:** When a CommonJS consumer imports the newly exposed named `isJSON` export.

**Suggested fix:** Preserve the generated named-export object, or explicitly attach `isJSON` to the default function before assigning it to `module.exports`.

+          const esm = await import(packageName)
+          const commonJS = require(packageName)
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**issue (bug_risk):** The `package-compatibility` job starts in a fresh workspace and never checks out the repository, so `${process.cwd()}/package.json` does not exist and `createRequire(...)` throws before the package entrypoint checks run. The downloaded artifact contains only `dist/`, not the package manifest or a package installation.

**Triggers:** When the package-compatibility job runs.

**Suggested fix:** Add a checkout step (and, if needed, install the package or otherwise provide its package.json) before running the entrypoint script.
</issue_to_address>

Sourcery assessment

Needs a human reviewer. 1 finding to address first, and a wrong release could change isJSON results or the ESM/CommonJS package entrypoints for consumers, and reverting this commit would not undo packages already published or installed. The impact is bounded and can be repaired with a follow-up release, while the new CI/tooling dependencies and workflow permission changes add additional review surface.

I can follow a similar pattern for v4? oxlint,oxfmt,rolldown, git-simple-hooks, etc...? 🤔

oxlint yes. do we need rolldown? i've just used tsc.

git hooks - i've tried ot avoid them in small projects and open source since i don't have a windows machine to test, but no big deal

<issue_to_address>
**issue (bug_risk):** The `test` script runs `.ts` test files directly with `node --test`, but the package declares support for Node `>= 20`; Node 20 cannot natively execute these TypeScript files, so `npm test` fails on a supported runtime before any tests run.

**Triggers:** When contributors or CI run the package scripts with Node 20 or an older Node release without native TypeScript stripping.

**Suggested fix:** Either raise the `engines.node` requirement to the minimum Node version supporting native TypeScript execution or retain a TypeScript test runner/transpilation step for Node 20.
