With store: false, a replayed assistant apply_patch call went out as a function_call, so its apply_patch_call_output (added in #699) had no matching call. Now the call is rebuilt as an apply_patch_call item (call_id, id, status: completed, operation). With store: true it is sent as an item_reference, and it is skipped when a previous response id or a conversation already holds it. This follows upstream's convertToOpenAIResponsesInput.

The change is in OpenAIResponsesLanguageModel.ConvertInput. The four upstream apply_patch tests are ported. docs/articles/providers.md describes the replay.

.NET-only symbols: none public. Two private helpers (AddApplyPatchCall, ApplyPatchInput) stand in for upstream's inline code and zod schema.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Improved OpenAI Responses handling for apply_patch tool calls.
    • Stored patch calls are now replayed using references when available, while other calls are reconstructed with their operation details and linked results.
    • Supports create, update, and delete file operations with validated patch information.
  • Documentation

    • Updated OpenAI Responses documentation to clarify how stored and previously retained apply_patch calls are represented.

📝 Walkthrough

Assistant apply_patch calls now use dedicated OpenAI Responses conversion. The conversion validates operation data and emits stored references or reconstructed call items, with tests for both paths. The provider documentation describes these replay conditions.

Mapped openai.apply_patch calls use dedicated conversion logic. Stored calls can become item references or be skipped for conversations and continuations; other calls become completed apply_patch_call items with validated operation data. Tests cover stored calls and create, update, and delete operations. The documentation describes replay conditions and call/output matching.

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 709 concerns replay of local_shell calls. This change implements replay for apply_patch but does not add local_shell handling.
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 390af

Custom-named apply_patch tools can produce mismatched call and output items. Align result routing before merging if those names are supported; add focused replay tests to protect the remaining branches.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 390af

The change is confined to replaying tool history to the configured provider; it does not itself execute patches or add credential authority. The main remaining uncertainty is whether call identities and provider-managed history remain consistent in non-default replay cases.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is request-history serialization for applications using the shared Responses provider, including OpenAI and Azure OpenAI. Supplied history can influence replayed operations and identifiers, but this change does not add a destination, credential source, or local execution capability. Downstream execution privileges are not established by the inspected conversion code.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Replay crosses from application-supplied assistant history into provider-native input. Reconstructed call identity comes from arguments.callId, whereas output identity comes from ToolModelMessage.ToolCallId; neither the new parser nor the tool-call constructor enforces equality. The supplied fixtures keep them equal, so malformed-history consequences and upstream identity guarantees remain unresolved rather than a verified security finding.
  • observed — Call routing recognizes mapped tool names, while the existing apply_patch output branch requires the literal name apply_patch. Custom logical names therefore lack symmetric routing. The output condition predates this PR; the comparison does not establish a newly introduced privilege expansion or authorization bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Conversion builds a fresh in-memory request and runs before transport, containing malformed reconstructed input failures before submission. Failed patch outcomes remain explicit output statuses. Repetition does not introduce shared local mutation in these helpers, but server-side handling of repeated references, interrupted requests, and replayed operations is not proven by this source inspection.

Explanation

Issue #706 requires assistant openai.apply_patch calls to replay as apply_patch_call items when hasApplyPatchTool is set. The reviewed source recognizes the mapped tool and validates its arguments. It emits call_id, id, status: "completed", and operation. Stored calls use item_reference or are skipped when a continuation or conversation already retains them. The four added tests cover stored replay, non-stored replay, update_file, and delete_file operations. These changes also preserve matching apply_patch_call_output items.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to OpenAIResponsesLanguageModel.ConvertInput, two private helpers, four focused apply_patch conversion tests, and related provider documentation. The helpers and tests support issue #706. The documentation describes the implemented replay behavior. The PR explicitly leaves local shell replay for issue #709, so no unrelated implementation is demonstrated.

Full details: Upstream Parity

Explanation

The check applies because the PR names upstream convertToOpenAIResponsesInput and references upstream test coverage. Upstream vercel/ai@dfcace2a3e7f3016ccb0e3c7e3a5b8103c8967b4 rebuilds apply_patch calls as apply_patch_call items and uses item references when stored (packages/openai/src/responses/convert-to-openai-responses-input.ts:930-1018). Its four apply_patch tests are cataloged in tests/parity/upstream-unit-tests.jsonl:12378-12381 and are ported with matching [UpstreamTest] IDs and assertions in tests/Vercel.AI.Tests/Upstream/OpenAI/ConvertToOpenAIResponsesInput/ApplyPatchTests.cs:41-135. The two upstream local-shell tests are explicitly listed as not ported with a reason in the PR description. The added C# helpers are private, named in the PR as .NET-only stand-ins for upstream inline code and the zod schema. The user-visible behavior is documented in docs/articles/providers.md. No custom-check failure condition is introduced.

Add focused coverage for the untested replay branches.

The four upstream ports do not exercise hasContinuation, hasConversation, or a missing itemId in AddApplyPatchCall. Add focused tests for these branches. The malformed-input cases are not required unless the PR explicitly names them as .NET-only tests.
