Summary

  • chore: enable agent runs with structured results #460 added the lite search type and widened web_search_exa's config to accept it, but ?defaultSearchType / DEFAULT_SEARCH_TYPE are still parsed against auto | fast | instant in api/mcp.ts and src/stdio.ts. Setting lite is silently ignored and web_search_exa falls back to auto.
  • Parse the default search type once in src/tools/config.ts (parseDefaultSearchType) and share its DefaultSearchType type with McpConfig, the request config, and web_search_exa, so the HTTP and stdio entry points can't drift from the tool again.
  • Document lite in env.example.

Behavior

  • Unset or unrecognized values behave as before: the query parameter falls back to DEFAULT_SEARCH_TYPE, then to auto.
  • auto, fast and instant are unchanged.

Verification

  • npm run format:check
  • npm run typecheck
  • npm test (193 passed); the new lite cases fail without the fix
  • Ran src/runtime-server.ts with EXA_API_BASE_URL pointed at a local stub and called web_search_exa over Streamable HTTP: DEFAULT_SEARCH_TYPE=lite and ?defaultSearchType=lite now send type: "lite" (previously type: "auto").

exa-labs#460 added the lite search type and widened web_search_exa's config to
accept it, but ?defaultSearchType and DEFAULT_SEARCH_TYPE are still
parsed against auto | fast | instant in api/mcp.ts and src/stdio.ts, so
lite is silently dropped and web_search_exa falls back to auto.

Parse the default search type in one place, src/tools/config.ts, and
share its type with McpConfig, the request config, and web_search_exa.
