What and why

Adds an experimental adapter-side utility for collecting responses from live chatbot endpoints during JobPhase.LOADING_DATA. This addresses the gap identified in #135 — chatbot teams currently need to write custom scripts to query their endpoint and format responses before submitting an EvalHub job.

The collector supports:

  • OpenAI-compatible chat completions and generic HTTP endpoints (MCP, Langflow, custom APIs)
  • Configurable request templates with {question} placeholder substitution
  • Configurable response extraction via dot-separated paths (e.g. output.answer, result.content.0.text)
  • Additional field extraction (e.g. retrieved contexts for RAG evaluation) via extra_response_paths
  • SDK auth integration (resolve_model_credentials(), api_key_env, custom headers)
  • TLS/CA bundle support following existing SDK patterns
  • Configurable failure handling (fail-fast or best-effort)
  • Progress callback support

Config is passed through JobSpec.parameters["live_collection"] as an experimental shape, with the intent to promote to test_data_ref once validated (per discussion in #135).

This utility would be useful for evaluation adapters like the RAGAS adapter (eval-hub-contrib#36) that evaluate chatbot/RAG responses against quality metrics.

Testing

  • Tests added or updated
  • Tested manually
uv run ruff check src/evalhub/adapter/collector.py tests/unit/test_collector.py
uv run mypy --config-file=pyproject.toml src/evalhub/adapter/collector.py
uv run pytest tests/unit/test_collector.py -v (46 passed)
uv run pytest tests/unit/ -q (299 passed, 0 failures)

Also tested live against a real chatbot endpoint using the generic HTTP protocol with CA bundle authentication.

Breaking changes

None. This is new experimental adapter SDK surface.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added experimental live response collection for OpenAI-compatible and generic HTTP services.
    • Supports CSV, JSON, and JSONL questions, configurable mappings, retries, progress tracking, and manifest output.
    • Added telemetry configuration and expanded adapter API access.
    • Supports explicit API keys and request headers without forwarding Kubernetes reference tokens.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Rate-limited requests are retried, while other client errors stop collection.
    • Endpoint collection now requires HTTPS and provides clearer handling for incomplete responses.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded README guidance for collection workflows, credential handling, telemetry, and collector configuration.

Add a collection utility to the adapter SDK that queries a live chatbot
endpoint with test questions and produces an evaluation-ready JSONL dataset.
Supports OpenAI-compatible chat completions and generic HTTP endpoints
(MCP, Langflow, custom APIs) with configurable request templates and
response path extraction.

Integrates with existing SDK auth (resolve_model_credentials) and TLS
patterns (CA bundle auto-detection, insecure flag). Config is passed
through JobSpec.parameters["live_collection"] as an experimental shape.

Consider writing a partial manifest on fail_fast failure.

When fail_fast=True and collection fails, the exception propagates before the manifest is written (lines 261-276). This leaves responses.jsonl with partial data but no manifest.json, making it harder for operators to inspect the failure state.

Consider either:

  1. Writing a partial manifest with failed=1 before raising, or
  2. Adding a clear log message with progress info before raising.

Also applies to: 261-276

Do not resolve model credentials unconditionally.

Build collector_config first and call collect_responses(collector_config) without explicit credentials. Otherwise, a resolver error can stop collection before collect_responses() handles it, and use_model_credentials: false is ignored.

Review notes (beyond CodeRabbit's pass)

Thanks for this — nice test coverage and it follows the existing SDK auth/TLS patterns well. Two things worth resolving before merge, plus a few smaller robustness gaps.

1. README section is spliced into an unrelated part of the doc

The new ## Live Endpoint Response Collection (Experimental) block lands between the env_card/eval_card code sample and the **additional_info** - supplementary evaluation metadata: paragraph, which is part of the pre-existing JobResults discussion under ## Framework Adapter Interface. As written, a reader hits the collector section mid-paragraph and then jumps back to additional_info right after. Suggest moving this to its own top-level location (e.g. after ## Framework Adapter Interface, near ## Examples).

2. Possible broken auth in Kubernetes mode

_resolve_auth_headers() does:

if credentials and credentials.api_key:
    headers["Authorization"] = f"Bearer {credentials.api_key}"

Per the ModelCredentials docstring in auth.py:

"In Kubernetes api_key holds a ref token (e.g. "api-key:ref") resolved by the sidecar proxy. In local mode api_key is the actual credential."

Elsewhere in the SDK (oci_proxy_host in oci/persister.py, sidecar_url in callbacks.py), the K8s pattern is to route the request through the sidecar, which performs the real auth, rather than sending the ref token straight to the destination. This collector always opens a plain httpx.Client() pointed directly at config.endpoint_url with no sidecar routing. With use_model_credentials=True (the default), in a real K8s deployment this looks like it would send Authorization: Bearer api-key:ref directly to the live chatbot endpoint, which won't authenticate. Worth confirming against actual sidecar behavior — if confirmed, K8s-mode auth via resolve_model_credentials() needs either proxy routing or an explicit doc caveat that it currently only works in local mode.

Smaller gaps

  • Lost exception context on retries: _send_request collapses the original exception into a string (last_error = f"{type(exc).__name__}: {exc}"), then CollectorError is raised with no cause, losing the traceback.
  • Non-retryable errors get retried anyway: the "Redirect not allowed" ValueError and 4xx HTTPStatusErrors are caught by the same broad except Exception as transient network errors, so they burn the full max_retries budget even though retrying won't help.
  • fail_fast still skips the manifest — the earlier nitpick about writing a partial manifest before raising on fail_fast=True doesn't look like it was addressed in the follow-up commits.
  • OpenAI extraction assumes plain content: _extract_openai hardcodes choices.0.message.content; a tool/function-call response (where content is null) silently becomes response: null with no error surfaced.

Happy to open follow-up PRs for the smaller items if useful — the two at the top seem worth resolving first.
