feat(packaging): WinGet and Chocolatey packages rendered from a published release - #151
packaging/build-feeds.ps1 renders the WinGet manifests and the Chocolatey packages of one published release, from the files a person downloads from the release page. Four packages:
the window
the command line
WinGet
DonislawDev.ChronoMock
DonislawDev.ChronoMock.CLI
Chocolatey
chrono-mock
chrono-mock-cli
installs
ChronoMock-app-win-x64.msi, and in WinGet ChronoMock-app-win-x64.zip second
ChronoMock-cli-win.zip
Nothing is submitted from here. A pull request to microsoft/winget-pkgs and a choco push stay a person's step.
Why it is shaped this way
The Start menu. WinGet gives a portable package no shortcut, and its manifest has no field for one (Add start menu entries for portable applications microsoft/winget-cli#2299). Only an installer can put the window in the Start menu, so the window's WinGet manifest lists the Windows installer FIRST. Recent clients prefer it over portable, and older ones take the first installer that applies. The window zip comes second, with no scope, for --scope user without administrator rights. That install gets no Start menu entry, and the description says so.
Chocolatey runs the same installer. The two feeds put down one thing in one shape. The shortcut, the PATH entry and the entry in Installed apps all come from the installer that msi.rs and the installer test in CI already hold. The uninstall finds it by its UpgradeCode, so it also removes a copy installed from the release page by hand.
ArchiveBinariesDependOnPath for the command line only. Started through a symbolic link, chrono looks for chrono_hook.dll, the calendars and the presets beside the link and stops with core.hook_dll_missing. The window started through a link runs from the real folder, because the .NET host follows the link. With the field, the window would put a folder holding the whole .NET runtime on PATH.
Chocolatey's command line gets one shim. The 32-bit chrono.exe gets none, so two shims of one name do not compete.
What a render trusts.SHA256SUMS is the one file taken as it is. The renderer hashes every other file against it, and what ties those files to the project is their signature. The installer and every binary sign-release.ps1 signs in the two archives must be signed by the certificate packaging/codesign.json pins, with a timestamp, the questions verify-release.yml asks of a published release. The list of signed binaries is read out of sign-release.ps1 by the PowerShell parser, and one refusal names every file that is not ours. The installer must carry the tag's version and the UpgradeCode build-msi.ps1 builds with, and each zip must hold the programs the manifests start, at that version. The file names carry no version, so these checks are what tell another release's folder apart. The UpgradeCode, the product name and the shortcut sentence come from build-msi.ps1 -SourceOnly, never from a copy.
Nothing half written, nothing nested. The packages are rendered into a folder beside -OutDir and renamed into place at the end, so a refused run leaves nothing. The rename fails when -OutDir is there, so a second run given the same folder is refused rather than nested in the first.
How it was checked
Rendered from the published v0.5.0 files, with the signatures of the installer and of all eleven signed binaries asked. A second render was identical byte for byte. winget validate passes for both manifests, and choco pack builds both packages.
Installed, used, upgraded and removed from local manifests and packages on Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11 Pro, with winget v1.29.380 and Chocolatey 2.7.5 and 2.7.4.
The installer WinGet chose was read from its own diagnostic log. A fresh install and an upgrade take the .msi. --scope user, an upgrade of a portable install and the command line take their zips.
The Start menu entry points at a file that exists, and core\x64 is on the machine PATH once.
There is one entry in Installed apps, and a session runs through every installed chrono.
Every uninstall leaves nothing behind, and the window's per-user folder comes out unchanged.
The one thing that did not pass is a refusal by the WinGet client. On the Windows 11 machine, with UAC on, it will not remove a user-scope package from an elevated shell. That uninstall then ran from a non-elevated one and left nothing behind.
A second run that made -OutDir while the first rendered was refused by the first, and nothing was left in either folder.
Every address in the packages answers 200, except packageSourceUrl, which points at this folder on main and answers once this is merged.
Guards.crates/cli/tests/feeds.rs has 8 tests. They hold the shape the installs were measured on, the published names, the one source of the UpgradeCode, the paths build-dist.ps1 stages and the refusals of the renderer, including that a refusal leaves nothing. The refusals are asked of release folders the guard builds from this build's chrono.exe and a copy of pwsh.exe, which get past every check of the folder and of the archives and stop at the signatures. The 19 mutation entries (feeds ...) are all caught. clippy, lint-ps and the hygiene, names, components, network and msi guards pass.
…shed release
packaging/build-feeds.ps1 renders four packages from the files of one
release: DonislawDev.ChronoMock and DonislawDev.ChronoMock.CLI for WinGet,
chrono-mock and chrono-mock-cli for Chocolatey.
- The window installs the Windows installer, the only kind that puts it in
the Start menu. In WinGet it is the first installer and the window zip
the second, for --scope user. Chocolatey runs the same installer and
finds it again by its UpgradeCode to uninstall it.
- The command line installs its zip. In WinGet with
ArchiveBinariesDependOnPath, because chrono started through a symbolic
link looks for chrono_hook.dll beside the link. In Chocolatey the 32-bit
chrono gets no shim.
- Nothing is taken on trust: every file is hashed against SHA256SUMS, the
installer must carry the tag's version, the UpgradeCode build-msi.ps1
builds with and a signature by the certificate packaging/codesign.json
pins, and each zip must hold its programs at that version.
crates/cli/tests/feeds.rs holds the shape the installs were measured on,
the published names, the one source of the UpgradeCode, the staged paths
and the refusals of the script, with twelve mutation entries.

### Mutation testing
A green suite says the code does what the tests check, not that the tests check
anything. So every guard here has been broken on purpose to see that it notices,
and those breaks are kept in `tests/mutation/entries.json`: one entry per break,
with the text it changes, the file it changes it in and the test that must go red.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds non-UI packaging behavior in packaging/build-feeds.ps1 and the WinGet and Chocolatey templates. It also adds crates/cli/tests/feeds.rs with tests for manifest structure, installer and uninstall behavior, shim behavior, package names, UpgradeCode sourcing, staged paths, renderer validation, refusal cases, and cleanup. tests/mutation/entries.json adds mutation coverage for key guards. The diff adds tests and does not delete, skip, or weaken existing tests.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The pull request adds no forbidden agent files, .env files, credentials, private URLs, internal hostnames/IPs, local absolute paths, personal email addresses, or debug leftovers. The added Write-Output and [Console]::Error.WriteLine calls in packaging/build-feeds.ps1 are intentional renderer success/refusal reporting, not debug output.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The pull request changes only packaging templates/scripts, CLI feed tests, and mutation data. The authoritative diff contains no XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF code, so the UI styling check does not apply.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem is introduced. The changed renderer performs one-time packaging work over three release files and a fixed set of two packages and templates. Its loops are bounded by those fixed inputs; archive validation checks only three executable entries. The tests use small fixed fixtures and seven refusal cases. No UI-thread work, large unvirtualized collection, per-item external call over a large collection, quadratic processing, or excessive polling is present.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
The new renderer can terminate with an unhandled file error instead of a controlled refusal when repository inputs are missing or corrupted. Get-ReleaseDate calls File.ReadAllText($changelog) without checking or catching errors (packaging/build-feeds.ps1:199-203). components.json and codesign.json are also read and parsed directly (lines 280 and 308), and template reads at lines 245 and 606 are not protected. This introduces the missing/corrupted-file robustness failure.
Resolution
Validate every repository input before reading it. Wrap file reads and JSON/template parsing in try/catch, and call Stop-Render with the input path and reason for missing, unreadable, invalid, or malformed content. Ensure these paths return exit code 1 and leave no temporary or output directory.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
The new archive parser can consume unbounded input and can terminate with an unhandled parser error. Assert-ArchiveHolds calls ZipFile.OpenRead at packaging/build-feeds.ps1:159 and ZipFileExtensions.ExtractToFile at line 166 without limits or a catch. A valid ZIP can declare or contain a very large executable and exhaust disk or memory during extraction. A malformed ZIP can throw before the function's try block. The package filenames loaded with ConvertFrom-Json at lines 280 and 308 are also not size- or error-checked, and the values flow into Join-Path at lines 298-304 without a basename or resolved-path check.
Resolution
Bound the release archive file size, archive entry count, and uncompressed size before processing. Extract with ZipArchiveEntry.Open() into a bounded stream, and catch InvalidDataException, I/O errors, and extraction-limit failures to call Stop-Render instead of exposing a terminating exception. Parse components.json and codesign.json inside size-limited try/catch blocks, validate the expected scalar schema, and reject package names that are rooted, contain directory separators, or resolve outside the real $releaseDir; apply the same real-path check to the files before hashing and signature inspection.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR adds generated install paths that modify Windows system state. The WinGet window manifest selects a machine-scoped WiX MSI, and the Chocolatey window script runs Install-ChocolateyPackage. That MSI writes HKLM registry keys, adds machine PATH, and creates a machine-wide Start-menu entry (packaging/msi/chronomock.wxs:87-110). The new package code does not save the prior state or restore it on interruption, crash, app close, or next start. The Chocolatey uninstall script provides only an explicit uninstall path.
Resolution
Add lifecycle-safe state handling for the new installation path. Save the existing registry and machine-PATH state before installation, restore it on failed or interrupted operations, and ensure cleanup also runs after crashes or the next start. Limit changes to the selected scope. Provide a clear stop/uninstall action that restores all saved state, and verify it for both WinGet and Chocolatey installs.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds user-facing text with clarity defects. packaging/build-feeds.ps1:143 includes $_.Exception.Message, exposing low-level exception text. Several refusals, such as the release-candidate message at line 81, explain the condition but do not tell the user the next action. The generated descriptions also call the same GUI product both an “application” and a “window” (lines 369, 375, and 403).
Resolution
Replace the MSI error with: Failed to read '$msi' as a Windows Installer database. Verify that the release contains a valid MSI and run again. Add an action to refusals, for example: The tag '$releaseTag' is a release candidate and has no installer. Pass a stable release tag such as v0.5.0. Use application consistently: start the application by typing ChronoMock... and The application, with a Start menu entry.... Also change the uninstall warning to {{TITLE}} is not installed, so there is nothing to uninstall.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
The PR adds two resource-retention paths. packaging/chocolatey/tools/chocolateyuninstall.window.ps1.in:15 creates the COM object $installer but never calls ReleaseComObject; the zero-products return and error paths also skip deterministic release. packaging/chocolatey/tools/chocolateyinstall.window.ps1.in:24 gives Windows Installer a versioned log in $env:TEMP but never removes it, so repeated releases leave accumulating logs.
Resolution
Wrap the Chocolatey uninstall logic in try/finally and call [void][Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal]::ReleaseComObject($installer) when the object is non-null. Store the MSI log path in a variable, run Install-ChocolateyPackage in a try/finally, and remove that log in the finally block with Remove-Item -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR adds a new user-facing packaging workflow and four feed packages, but it changes no README, CONTRIBUTING guide, or CHANGELOG file. packaging/build-feeds.ps1 adds the -Tag, -Release, and -OutDir interface and documents new WinGet and Chocolatey outputs at lines 3-55. The repository documentation does not mention WinGet, Chocolatey, or build-feeds.ps1. The new script also duplicates the existing MSI database reader: Read-MsiProperties at lines 124-152 repeats the COM access and cleanup implemented by Read-MsiRows in packaging/build-msi.ps1 at lines 258-293. The feature scope matches the title and description, and no incompatible public API change is evident.
Resolution
Add release and contributor documentation that explains the four package outputs, prerequisites, the pwsh ./packaging/build-feeds.ps1 -Tag ... -Release ... -OutDir ... command, output-location rules, and the manual WinGet and Chocolatey publishing steps. Add an entry under CHANGELOG.md Unreleased. Extract the shared MSI property-row reader into a reusable PowerShell helper/module, then use it from both build-msi.ps1 and build-feeds.ps1.

Bound the uncompressed size before extracting a ZIP entry to temp storage.
Assert-ArchiveHolds extracts each program entry in full to $scratch before it reads the version. It does not compare $entry.Length with a limit first. A ZIP whose SHA256SUMS line matches the file can contain an entry that expands far beyond the free space of the temp volume. The finally block removes $scratch only after the write has already filled the disk. Check $entry.Length against a fixed maximum, such as a few hundred megabytes, and refuse with Stop-Render before calling ExtractToFile. Read only the VersionInfo of the extracted file, so the copy can stay small.
Suggested fix
if ($null -eq $entry) { Stop-Render "$(Split-Path -Leaf $zip) holds no $entryName, which a package starts" }
+ if ($entry.Length -gt 512MB) { Stop-Render "$(Split-Path -Leaf $zip) holds $entryName at $($entry.Length) bytes, which is larger than a program ChronoMock ships" }
$copy = Join-Path $scratch ([guid]::NewGuid().ToString('N') + '.exe')

Review comment at @packaging/build-feeds.ps1 around lines 165 - 166:
In Assert-ArchiveHolds, check the ZIP entry’s uncompressed $entry.Length against
a fixed maximum and call Stop-Render when it exceeds that limit, before
ExtractToFile writes to $scratch. Preserve the existing version-info-only read
of the extracted file.
The only renderer test in crates/cli/tests/feeds.rs:299-305 stops at the installer signature check in packaging/build-feeds.ps1:305. No test asserts a successful render. Changes to the MSI property and UpgradeCode checks, the archive checks, template expansion, or the final Move-Item do not fail the renderer test. Its assertions would still pass with those steps removed. The mutation entries do not cover those steps either.
Skipping only the signature check does not let a render finish. The script also:
compares the signer certificate with the pin in packaging/codesign.json,
checks the MSI ProductVersion and UpgradeCode,
runs git cat-file on site/assets/icon.png at the tag in the clone.
A stand-in file cannot pass these checks. A test needs either of the following:
Signed fixtures. The signer must match the pinned certificate. The MSI must carry the release ProductVersion and UpgradeCode. Both ZIPs must hold the expected programs. The tag in the clone must contain the icon file.
A test boundary around the steps after the signature check. The test calls those steps with prepared inputs.
A test cannot hold the pinned signer's key. Any boundary therefore has to include the signer check as well.

Extend `the_packages_are_rendered_from_a_published_release_or_not_at_all` to

Add a mutation entry for the archive checks in Assert-ArchiveHolds.
This PR adds a guard that no test reaches. The feed test stops at the installer signature check, which runs before the archive calls at lines 332-333. CONTRIBUTING.md requires an entry for each new guard. Without one, removing either archive refusal keeps the mutation run green.
Add a test that reaches the archive calls, then add entries that break each refusal.

- The archives were taken on their hash, and SHA256SUMS sits in the same
folder as the files it lists. Every binary sign-release.ps1 signs in
the two archives is now asked its signature like the installer:
signed by the certificate packaging/codesign.json pins, with a
timestamp, the questions verify-release.yml asks of a published
release. The list is read out of sign-release.ps1 by the PowerShell
parser, never copied, and one refusal names every file that is not

It is now the one-line refusal the script promises.
- Move-Item puts a folder inside one that is already there, so a second
run given the same -OutDir could nest its packages in the first run's
and still say rendered. A rename that fails on an existing folder
replaces it.
- A relative -Release or -OutDir is resolved against the location of
the session. .NET resolves it against the process folder, which
Set-Location does not move.
- No test reached the archive checks. They now come before the
signatures, and the guard builds its release folders from this
build's chrono.exe and a copy of pwsh.exe, so it asks every refusal
of the archives, and that the signature refusal names the installer
and each signed binary. Its spawns have their entry in the network
register.
Seven new mutation entries.

--scope userwithout administrator rights. That install gets no Start menu entry, and the description says so.msi.rsand the installer test in CI already hold. The uninstall finds it by its UpgradeCode, so it also removes a copy installed from the release page by hand.ArchiveBinariesDependOnPathfor the command line only. Started through a symbolic link, chronolooks forchrono_hook.dll, the calendars and the presets beside the link and stops withcore.hook_dll_missing. The window started through a link runs from the real folder, because the .NET host follows the link. With the field, the window would put a folder holding the whole .NET runtime on PATH.chrono.exegets none, so two shims of one name do not compete.SHA256SUMSis the one file taken as it is. The renderer hashes every other file against it, and what ties those files to the project is their signature. The installer and every binarysign-release.ps1signs in the two archives must be signed by the certificatepackaging/codesign.jsonpins, with a timestamp, the questionsverify-release.ymlasks of a published release. The list of signed binaries is read out ofsign-release.ps1by the PowerShell parser, and one refusal names every file that is not ours. The installer must carry the tag's version and the UpgradeCodebuild-msi.ps1builds with, and each zip must hold the programs the manifests start, at that version. The file names carry no version, so these checks are what tell another release's folder apart. The UpgradeCode, the product name and the shortcut sentence come frombuild-msi.ps1 -SourceOnly, never from a copy.-OutDirand renamed into place at the end, so a refused run leaves nothing. The rename fails when-OutDiris there, so a second run given the same folder is refused rather than nested in the first. How it was checked
winget validatepasses for both manifests, andchoco packbuilds both packages..msi.--scope user, an upgrade of a portable install and the command line take their zips.core\x64is on the machine PATH once.chrono.-OutDirwhile the first rendered was refused by the first, and nothing was left in either folder.packageSourceUrl, which points at this folder onmainand answers once this is merged.crates/cli/tests/feeds.rshas 8 tests. They hold the shape the installs were measured on, the published names, the one source of the UpgradeCode, the pathsbuild-dist.ps1stages and the refusals of the renderer, including that a refusal leaves nothing. The refusals are asked of release folders the guard builds from this build'schrono.exeand a copy ofpwsh.exe, which get past every check of the folder and of the archives and stop at the signatures.
