Step 2d of the random-property plan: what the tool reads from catalogue files - the bytes of a calendar or a preset, the JSON in them, the two schemas, and the preset catalogue the window lists. Step 2e (chrono-mech) follows.

Properties (6, each in a mod properties beside its code)

where property history it calibrates on
calendar a catalogue file is its text or a refusal that says why R5-B9 item 6
calendar a hidden character anywhere is refused by its place and never repeated R5-B1
calendar a wrong kind anywhere is refused in the file's own words finding (g) of PR A
calendar a calendar reads as written or is refused for its one flaw R2-N8
preset a preset reads as written or is refused for its one flaw R4-N33
preset_catalogue the catalogue lists a preset exactly when it can be used R4-S22

The oracles are models, not the code under test:

  • File bytes. The size a file says it has and the size it has are drawn apart, both at the limit and one byte either side by name, with a filler from io::repeat so a 4 MiB case costs no 4 MiB model. The text is pieces of UTF-8 and pieces that are not UTF-8 in any neighbourhood, with a cut character only last (a continuation after it would complete it). The reader hands over one byte, three or more a call, is interrupted, or fails at the first, the last or any byte.
  • Hidden characters. A JSON tree four deep with keys and texts from lists of characters that show and characters that do not, written as themselves or as \u escapes with surrogate halves. The place, code point and position owed are worked out from the tree, without assuming the order of the walk.
  • Wrong kinds. Any place of any shipped calendar or preset gets a value of another kind, with the edges of every integer width the files are read in. The two schemas are restated in the test as the contract (docs/04). Nothing is claimed for a list where a nested object belongs, which is read by position on purpose (ObjectOnly).
  • Calendars and presets. Drawn within their schemas, with weekdays in any case and repeated, February 29, the step limits by name, units, snaps, zones, every base and parameter kind. The loaded calendar, the read preset and the resolved moment are compared whole with what the model works out. Each named flaw is added alone, and the model keeps it the only one.

Fixed

The search found three things:

  • serde's words reached the author of a file. A rule type or a step name the reader does not know was an "unknown variant", a rule type that is not text "expected variant identifier". They are now an "unknown name" and a "name, written as text". A preset step that is not an object ("steps": [5]), or that names two steps, was refused with "expected value" - serde_json's sentence for text that is not JSON. A step is now read through a small gate (OneKey) that refuses another kind as that kind, in the step's own expecting words, and names a second key.
  • A date was quoted with a time nobody wrote. A preset parameter's default or a --param value that is not a date was refused quoting '2026-13-01T00:00:00'. It quotes what was written, through parse_civil_datetime_as, now public in chrono-core.
  • The catalogue named no step. --preset has said "step 2:" for a step it cannot use since R5-D5, and chrono presets - where the window takes the reasons for the files it skips - gave the same reason without the number.

CHANGELOG.md names all three. The recorded answer of the test catalogue (crates/cli/tests/data/preset-catalogue.json) changes by ten reasons, each one of these rewordings, and nothing else. The window reads that file in its tests and asserts only the counts, which are unchanged.

Measured

  • Fixed seed: the 85 unit tests and properties of calendar::, preset::, preset_catalogue:: and grammar:: green, all 24 properties of the crate in 1.97 s. chrono-core calc:: 93 green.
  • Random seed, 50 000 cases each property before this was opened: from 22 s to 48 s a property, nothing beyond the findings above.
  • Mutation registry 944 to 955, all 11 new entries caught: one from the history of each property's class (6), and one for each new gate (5). A twelfth, for a visit_unit override in the step gate, came out missed - serde_json already writes a null as null, so the override was dead and is gone.
  • clippy and clippy-pin, the guards hygiene, names, shape, weekly_search, wire_keys, architecture, components. The weekly part command-line units already searches these modules. search.rs changes, so search.yml runs on this pull request.

Not in this step

A calendar with more than 2 000 holidays is left to its unit test (a case would hold 2 000 holidays). A date written without zero padding (26-1-1, the year 26) reads as a date, as it does everywhere the civil parser reads one.

Review round

CodeRabbit, one comment, valid (e25f82d): the mutation entry for serde's variant words held both edits, so one verdict covered two breaks, against CONTRIBUTING.md (one entry per break). It is two entries now, each caught alone - registry 956.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…iles - and three refusals that now speak the file's words

Six properties over the calendar and preset readers and the preset catalogue:

- a catalogue file is read whole as its text (less one byte order mark) or refused by the first
of its declared size, its real size, a read that fails and UTF-8 - drawn with sizes at the limit
by name and a reader that hands over few bytes, is interrupted or fails
- a hidden character in any text or key of a JSON tree is refused by its place, and no refusal of a
cut file or a file with a key given twice carries one as itself
- a value of the wrong kind anywhere in a shipped calendar or preset is refused, and no refusal
speaks of Rust types or reads like a syntax error in a file that is JSON
- a calendar drawn within its schema loads as exactly the calendar it describes, and the same
calendar with one named flaw is refused naming it
- a preset drawn within its schema reads as written and resolves to the moment worked out from the
model, and with one named flaw it is refused, by load or by use, naming it with its exit code
- the catalogue lists a preset exactly when --preset accepts it, its canonical form reads back as
the same moment and defaults, and a refusal is the sentence --preset gives

The search found three things, fixed here:

- serde's "unknown variant" and "expected variant identifier" reached the author of a calendar or
preset, and a step that is not an object, or names two steps, was refused with "expected value"
- a date parameter's default or --param value that is not a date was quoted with T00:00:00 added
- the catalogue named a step that does not resolve without its number, while --preset gave it

Each fix has a test and a mutation entry, and each property one entry from the history of its class,
all caught. The recorded answer of the test catalogue changes by the ten reasons these fixes reword.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI now reports clearer errors for calendar and preset input, preserves original invalid date text, and includes step numbers in catalogue conversion errors. Generated tests cover valid inputs, malformed inputs, and catalogue reading boundaries.

Changes: CLI catalogue diagnostics and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Calendar catalogue parsing and validation
crates/cli/src/calendar.rs, tests/mutation/entries.json
Calendar errors use author-facing name terminology. Generated checks cover catalogue reading, hidden characters, schema errors, and valid or flawed calendars.
Preset step and date diagnostics
crates/cli/src/preset.rs, crates/core/src/calc.rs, crates/cli/tests/data/preset-catalogue.json, CHANGELOG.md, tests/mutation/entries.json
Step parsing reports invalid shapes and names with clearer errors. Invalid dates retain the supplied text. Tests cover generated preset inputs and these error cases.
Catalogue step reporting and generated checks
crates/cli/src/preset_catalogue.rs, crates/cli/src/search.rs, crates/cli/tests/data/preset-catalogue.json, CHANGELOG.md, tests/mutation/entries.json
Catalogue step-conversion errors include a zero-based step index. Generated checks cover canonical preset values and catalogue refusals.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The runtime changes have matching tests. New calendar wording is checked by exact assertions and property tests. Step-shape errors and date text preservation have dedicated tests. Preset-catalogue step numbering is checked by property tests. search.rs is test-only support. The diff shows no deleted tests, skip attributes, or weakened assertions.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The pull-request diff adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Targeted inspection found no credentials, tokens, private URLs, absolute local paths, emails, IP addresses, or hostnames. It also found no debug output calls such as print!, println!, dbg!, breakpoint(), or debugger. The added panic!/unreachable! calls are test/model invariant handling, not debug output.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The pull request does not add or change GUI code. The authoritative diff contains only Markdown, Rust CLI/core code, JSON test data, and mutation metadata, with no XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF files. The hardcoded UI styling check is therefore not applicable.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem is introduced. The large property-test and generator additions are under #[cfg(test)]; search is test-only. Runtime changes only add fixed-size error-word replacements, one-key step deserialization, one date-format allocation for bare dates, and enumerate() over the existing preset-step iteration. These do not add UI-thread work, per-item external calls, polling, or superlinear processing of a large collection.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The reviewed diff adds catalogue parsing and test coverage. It does not add any desktop robustness failure condition. The only new filesystem reads are test-only reads rooted at compile-time CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR, not working-directory asset loads. No settings/data writes, culture-dependent persistence, long UI operation, destructive action, background task, admin request, or network call was added.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

No unsafe file-parsing behavior is introduced. The changed production code only translates JSON errors, validates one preset-step key, preserves date text, and adds a step index to catalogue errors. search.rs property generators are test-only. Existing catalogue loading uses File::open, a 4 MiB read cap, UTF-8 validation, and validated catalogue IDs; the PR adds no code execution, external-entity resolution, arbitrary-type deserialization, path escape, formula export, or unbounded read.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR does not add or change code for network filters, proxies, firewalls, system time, process hooks, Windows services, registry, or drivers. The diff changes JSON/catalogue parsing, error wording, date parsing visibility, and property tests. No reversible system-state requirement applies.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes user-facing catalogue errors, but the changed messages identify the failure and the correction: they name invalid kinds, list valid rule or step names, identify duplicate step keys, preserve the written date, and add the failing step number. No raw exception, vague control label, tooltip issue, Yes/No confirmation, or inconsistent naming of the same concept was introduced.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

No resource leak is introduced. The production changes only translate errors, deserialize one preset step, add a step index, and expose a parser; they add no handlers, timers, threads, processes, network responses, or native handles. read_catalogue_file opens one File and passes it by value to read_catalogue_text, so normal Rust drop releases it on success and error. The new OnceLock and file-reading helpers are under test-only code, and the OnceLock stores one finite snapshot of shipped test data rather than an unbounded cache.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

No scope or documentation failure found. The diff matches the title and description: six property-test areas, three refusal fixes, mutation entries, fixture updates, and the related CHANGELOG.md entries. The only API visibility change adds parse_civil_datetime_as and crate-local access; it is not backward-incompatible. No README, configuration, build, or dependency change is present.
