fix: patch placeholders in links, content controls and tracked changes - #3864
patchDocument and patchDetector only read runs that are direct children of a paragraph. A placeholder whose run is inside anything else was skipped with no error: patchDetector didn't list it, and patchDocument returned the template with the placeholder unchanged. That is what #2679 describes ("generates the same file with exactly the same tags… doesn't throw any errors"). The issue has no template, so this may not be the reporter's case, but these were the only templates I found that 9.15.0 still leaves unpatched.
The skipped elements:
a link's text (w:hyperlink)
a content control in a paragraph (w:sdt)
text typed with Track Changes on (w:ins, w:moveTo)
a smart tag, custom XML, a simple field's result, and text in a direction (w:smartTag, w:customXml, w:fldSimple, w:dir, w:bdo)
Deleted text (w:del, w:moveFrom) is still left out, as it isn't the paragraph's text.
Change
Rendered runs now have a path from the paragraph, through whatever holds them, in place of their index among the paragraph's children. The patch goes where the placeholder's run is, so a link's text stays linked and a tracked insertion stays tracked.
Where the content can't go there, it goes where Word can open it:
Placeholder in
Patch
Result
A tracked insertion or move
A link or a field (not allowed by CT_RunTrackChange)
Lifted out between two parts of the insertion, untracked, as Word does for a link added with Track Changes off. The second part gets a w:id above the highest in the part, as the Open XML SDK validator requires unique ids
A link
A link
Lifted out, so the patch's link replaces the template's there. Left nested, Word sees two links over the same text
A plain-text content control (w:text)
Anything but text, such as a link, a picture, a field or a symbol
w:text is removed, making it a rich-text control. Word for Mac found each of those unreadable in a plain-text control. Text, tabs, breaks, mixed formatting and bookmarks opened fine and keep the control plain
A content control showing its placeholder text (w:showingPlcHdr)
Anything
w:showingPlcHdr is removed, and the content takes the control's w:rPr rather than the grey Placeholder Text style, as typed text does
A content control bound to custom XML or a document property (w:dataBinding)
Anything
The binding is removed. Word fills a bound control in from its data on open, and put {{name}} back over the patch in Word for Mac
docs/usage/templates.md has a new section, "Placeholders in links, content controls and tracked changes", with a live example.
Finding the patches that aren't applied
The other ways a patch silently does nothing are mismatches between the patches and the template: a key written with its braces ("{{name}}"), a typo, or other delimiters such as {name}. patchDocument doesn't throw for a patch whose placeholder isn't in the template, as one set of patches can serve templates that don't all have every placeholder. Comparing the patches' keys with patchDetector's finds them, but patchDetector only knew {{ and }}, and found nothing in a <<name>> template:
patchDetector takes placeholderDelimiters, typed from PatchDocumentOptions so the two stay the same, and throws for blank delimiters as patchDocument does (the check is shared). Delimiters are escaped, so [[, $( and . are matched as they are. With the default delimiters, the pattern is the one it had.
A key can't contain the start delimiter, so a stray opener (<<unfinished <<name>>, or a < b and <name> with < and >) no longer hides the placeholder after it. The search from an unmatched opener also stops at the next one, so it no longer runs to the end of the paragraph.
templates.md has a section, "A placeholder isn't replaced", with a live example that lists the patches whose placeholder isn't in the template, and the usual causes. patcher.md documents placeholderDelimiters and no longer says patchDetector can't take them.
Checked
Templates covering each container, a placeholder split across a container boundary, several occurrences in one paragraph, a patch containing its own placeholder, PatchType.DOCUMENT, and Patching of values in Text Frames/Boxes #2646's text box template. With 9.15.0, those in a link, an inline content control, a tracked insertion, a smart tag or a simple field came back unpatched; with this branch every one is patched and found by patchDetector.
45 patched outputs, including every link-into-container combination, pass the Open XML SDK validator (Microsoft 365). The split tracked insertion failed it on a duplicate w:id until the second part got its own id.
Word for Mac 16 opens all the content-control, link and tracked-insertion outputs. Its object model shows the expected links and revisions, and the placeholder control's content is no longer grey.
New specs for the run renderer, the replacer (each container, lifting, content controls) and an end-to-end patchDetector + patchDocument. 16 of them fail without the fix.
New specs for patchDetector's delimiters: found the same as patchDocument patches, characters a regular expression gives a meaning to, with trimPlaceholders, and blank delimiters.
The template demos all run and validate. npm run check-api finds no breaking changes, and the full suite passes with 100% coverage (6588 tests). The first push missed five branches, which the second commit covers.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Placeholders can be replaced inside hyperlinks, content controls, tracked insertions, and field results.
Replacements preserve applicable link, tracked-insertion, and text-formatting context. When inserted content cannot fit inside a link or tracked insertion, it is placed outside the container.
Content controls displaying placeholder text show the replacement with the control’s formatting; controls are adjusted when inserted content requires richer formatting.
Placeholder detection supports custom delimiters that can be matched to those used for document patching. Unmatched placeholders remain unchanged without an error, and detection can identify unmatched keys.
Documentation
Added guidance on replacement behavior, custom delimiters, and common causes of unmatched placeholders.
patchDocument and patchDetector only read runs that are direct children of
a paragraph, so a placeholder in a link, a content control, text typed with
Track Changes on, a smart tag or a field's result was left as it was, with
no error. Runs in those elements are now read and patched where they are.
Where the content can't go in what holds the placeholder, it goes where
Word can open it: a link is taken out of a tracked insertion (whose piece
after it gets an id of its own) or a link, a plain text content control
given more than text becomes a rich text one, and a content control
showing its placeholder text stops showing it.

Walkthrough
Paragraph rendering and replacement now support runs inside nested document structures. Placeholder detection accepts custom delimiters, and the usage documentation describes replacement behavior and cases where placeholders remain unchanged.
Paragraph rendering now finds nested runs and records their paths. Token lookup and paragraph editing use those paths. Tests cover nested runs, text order, offsets, and excluded deleted or moved-away text.
Replace placeholders in nested structures src/patcher/replacer.ts, src/patcher/replacer.spec.ts, docs/usage/templates.md
Replacement handles placeholders in nested structures, including content controls and tracked changes. It adjusts content that cannot remain in its enclosing container, updates content-control properties, and assigns IDs to new tracked-change pieces. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.
patchDetector accepts custom delimiters and validates them with the shared delimiter validator. patchDocument also uses that validator. Tests and documentation describe delimiter matching and placeholders that remain unchanged.

Explanation
Issue #2679 reports unchanged placeholders after patching. The PR changes paragraph rendering and replacement to locate runs through nested containers, including links, content controls, tracked changes, fields, and other run holders. It preserves or adjusts container structure when required. patchDetector now supports the same custom delimiters as patchDocument. Added renderer, replacer, detector, and end-to-end tests cover these cases. The issue has no template, so the reporter's exact case cannot be confirmed, but the PR addresses the reported silent no-op behavior for the identified cases.

CI's coverage fell below 100%: an empty link, a content control without
properties, and runs that stay together when a tracked insertion is split
weren't tested. The name fallbacks in the replacer's lookups could never
be reached, so the lookups take an element's name as it is.

…d say why a placeholder isn't replaced
patchDetector takes placeholderDelimiters, as patchDocument does, so it
finds the same placeholders. Before, it only knew {{ and }}, and found
nothing in a template with <<name>>.
templates.md has a section on a placeholder that isn't replaced: how to
find the patches whose placeholder isn't in the template with
patchDetector, as patchDocument leaves them out without an error, and the
usual reasons, such as a key written with its braces.

src/patcher/patch-detector.ts:98 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Stray opener can hide a custom-delimiter key from detection.
With custom delimiters, patchDetector matches from the first opening delimiter to the next closing delimiter. For <<unfinished <<name>>, the match is unfinished <<name, so name is not returned. A caller that builds patches only from detected keys then never creates the name patch, and <<name>> stays in the output. The same omission already happens at base for {{ }}. This PR extends it to any delimiters passed to placeholderDelimiters. Consider a lookahead that rejects a start delimiter inside the key, so the match begins at the second opener.

Document a limit for identical delimiters, or reject them when patching.
With identical start and end delimiters, such as ., the detector reports adjacent keys that share a delimiter. In .a.b., it reports both a and b. Patching a replaces .a., which removes the shared .. Patching b then finds no .b., so b stays in the output. Use distinct delimiters for adjacent placeholders, or reject identical delimiters in checkPlaceholderDelimiters. A safe localized fix has not been established, so no edit is proposed.

Minor · Bound the placeholder scan for unmatched start delimiters. · patch-detector.ts:98
Bound the placeholder scan for unmatched start delimiters.
placeholderPattern builds (?<=start).+?(?=end) from caller-supplied delimiters. When a start delimiter has no later end delimiter, the lazy .+? scans to the end of the paragraph text. Each such start repeats that scan, so detection cost grows with the product of the unmatched start count and the paragraph length. Custom single-character starts such as < make this reachable for any paragraph with many unmatched start characters. Before this change, only the fixed {{ start had the same shape, so the defect is not new for default delimiters.
The cost is CPU time only. Output stays correct. A remedy should stop searching for an end once none exists after a start, because no later start can find one either. I did not include a diff, because an exact replacement that preserves the regex's overlap and minimum-length rules was not established from the inspected code.

Answers to the comments in CodeRabbit's review bodies:
Pass the controls that hold the later runs of a spanning placeholder to fillContentControl: I disagree. That needs a placeholder that starts before a content control and ends in the control's placeholder text, such as {{na then me}}. Word treats placeholder text as one unit: clicking it selects all of it, and typing replaces it. So a placeholder split across the control's edge has to be made on purpose, and it isn't worth extra code here.
Stray opener can hide a custom-delimiter key from detection: Agreed, and reproduced: <<unfinished <<name>> gave unfinished <<name, and with < and > as delimiters, a < b and <name> gave b and <name. A key can no longer contain the start delimiter, so both now give name. Other keys are found as before, including {{{name}}} and identical delimiters. Covered by "should not let a start delimiter before a placeholder hide it". Fixed in c090789ec8 (#3864).
Document a limit for identical delimiters, or reject them when patching: I disagree. Identical delimiters, as in %name%, are a common convention, and patchDocument has accepted them since placeholderDelimiters was added in #3036. Rejecting them would break those templates. The problem needs placeholders that share a delimiter, such as .a.b., and that text is ambiguous with any identical delimiters. %a%%b% is detected and patched as a and b.
Bound the placeholder scan for unmatched start delimiters: Agreed. The stray-opener change above fixes this too: with no start delimiter allowed in a key, the search from a start delimiter with no end after it stops at the next one. 120,000 characters of a < b with < and > as delimiters took 1.4 s and now take no measurable time. Fixed in c090789ec8 (#3864).

Fixes #2679.
patchDocumentandpatchDetectoronly read runs that are direct children of a paragraph. A placeholder whose run is inside anything else was skipped with no error:patchDetectordidn't list it, andpatchDocumentreturned the template with the placeholder unchanged. That is what #2679 describes ("generates the same file with exactly the same tags… doesn't throw any errors"). The issue has no template, so this may not be the reporter's case, but these were the only templates I found that 9.15.0 still leaves unpatched. The skipped elements:

Rendered runs now have a
pathfrom the paragraph, through whatever holds them, in place of theirindexamong the paragraph's children. The patch goes where the placeholder's run is, so a link's text stays linked and a tracked insertion stays tracked.Where the content can't go there, it goes where Word can open it:

Finding the patches that aren't applied
The other ways a patch silently does nothing are mismatches between the patches and the template: a key written with its braces (
"{{name}}"), a typo, or other delimiters such as{name}.patchDocumentdoesn't throw for a patch whose placeholder isn't in the template, as one set of patches can serve templates that don't all have every placeholder. Comparing the patches' keys withpatchDetector's finds them, butpatchDetectoronly knew{{and}}, and found nothing in a<<name>>template:patchDetectortakesplaceholderDelimiters, typed fromPatchDocumentOptionsso the two stay the same, and throws for blank delimiters aspatchDocumentdoes (the check is shared). Delimiters are escaped, so[[,$(and.are matched as they are. With the default delimiters, the pattern is the one it had.<<unfinished <<name>>, ora < b and <name>with<and>) no longer hides the placeholder after it. The search from an unmatched opener also stops at the next one, so it no longer runs to the end of the paragraph.placeholderDelimitersand no longer sayspatchDetectorcan't take them.Checked

With 9.15.0, those in a link, an inline content control, a tracked insertion, a smart tag or a simple field came back unpatched; with this branch every one is patched and found bypatchDetector.w:iduntil the second part got its own id.patchDetector+patchDocument. 16 of them fail without the fix.patchDetector's delimiters: found the same aspatchDocumentpatches, characters a regular expression gives a meaning to, withtrimPlaceholders, and blank delimiters.npm run check-apifinds no breaking changes, and the full suite passes with 100% coverage (6588 tests). The first push missed five branches, which the second commit covers.Summary by CodeRabbit
