Closes #2597.

fitText on a TextRun (or any run properties) squeezes or spreads the run's text so that it takes up the width given, as Word's Fit Text does (w:fitText, ISO/IEC 29500-1 §17.3.2.14):

new Paragraph({
    children: [new TextRun({ text: "Name", fitText: { width: 1440 } }), new TextRun(": Jane Smith")],
}),
new Paragraph({
    children: [
        new TextRun({ text: "Date of ", fitText: { width: 1440, group: 1 } }),
        new TextRun({ text: "birth", bold: true, fitText: { width: 1440, group: 1 } }),
        new TextRun(": 1 April 1990"),
    ],
}),
  • width is in twips, or a measure such as "1in".
  • Runs next to each other with the same group (w:id) are fitted together, as one piece of text, so it can be formatted differently.

Every run gets an id

The spec says a run without w:id is fitted on its own. In Word for Mac (16.114) it isn't. I measured where the text after each fitted run started:

Runs (each fitted to 1440 twips) Without ids With ids
one run 72 pt 72 pt
two runs next to each other 72 pt in all (fitted together) 144 pt
a run with an id, then one without 116 pt 144 pt
two runs with plain text between them, in a document with other fitted runs not fitted 72 + 16 + 72 pt

Word always writes an id itself, so it seems it never expects a missing one. When Fit Text was applied in Word and the file saved, it wrote w:id="-358576640" and then -358576639. So docx gives each run without a group a negative id of its own, from a counter (fitTextUniqueNumericId) like the one bookmarks use. Negative ids can't meet the groups people give. With those ids, every case above fits to its own width in Word.

Word also fits one group to its first run's width when the runs give different widths, so the docs say so.

Widths as measures are written in twips

The standard's ST_TwipsMeasure allows "1in", and Word reads it. But the Open XML SDK validator in the demos workflow checks w:fitText/@w:val as a UInt32 against Office's schemas, and rejects it. So a measure is converted to whole twips (universalMeasureToTwips). The demo and probe documents pass the validator for Office 2010 to Microsoft 365.

docx/layout

docx/layout already laid out w:fitText from documents Word made. A new layoutDocument test checks it lays out what docx now writes the way Word does: one run, two ungrouped runs, a group, and a group with mixed widths. The layout docs no longer say fitted text only comes from Word.

Checked

  • In Word for Mac, the demo's labels end where their widths say: the colons after "Name", "Address", "Telephone number" and the two-run "Date of birth" are all at 72 pt, and those after 氏名, 住所 and 電話番号 at 44 pt.
  • LibreOffice 26.8 ignores w:fitText and shows the text at its own width. The docs say so.
  • vitest run: 6019 tests pass. tsc, ESLint, Prettier and cspell are clean on the changed files.

Docs and demo

  • New "Fit Text" section in docs/usage/text.md, with a live example
  • demo/text/fit-text.ts, with English and Japanese labels

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for fitting text runs to a specified width in generated DOCX documents.
    • Supports fitting individual runs or grouping multiple runs to share a common width.
    • Added validation for fit-text widths and grouping options.
  • Documentation

    • Added usage guidance and examples for text fitting, including unit behavior and LibreOffice compatibility.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for width conversion, grouping behavior, generated documents, and invalid configurations.

`fitText` on a run squeezes or spreads its text to take up the width
given, as Word's Fit Text does (`w:fitText`). Runs next to each other
with the same `group` are fitted together, to the first one's width.

Word writes an id for every piece of fitted text, and fits runs without
one unreliably (two of them next to each other together, some not at
all), so a run without a group gets a negative id of its own, as Word's
own ids are. A width given as a measure is written in twips, as Office's
schemas allow only a whole number of them.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds fitText options to text runs. It generates w:fitText XML with converted widths and group IDs, and includes tests, documentation, and a DOCX demo.

Changes: Text run fitting

Adds run-level fitText options and emits w:fitText with widths converted to twips. Uses a supplied group ID or generates descending negative IDs. Tests cover conversion, group handling, validation, XML ordering, and layout widths.
Fit-text examples and documentation

Explanation

Issue #2597 requires TextRun support for fitText and w:fitText markup with an ID and width. IRunStylePropertiesOptions now exposes fitText, and RunProperties emits createFitText. The implementation writes w:val in twips, writes a supplied group ID, and assigns unique negative IDs when no group is supplied. Tests cover XML output, measures, IDs, grouping, and layout behavior. Documentation and the demo show the public API.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2597. The layout updates verify the new markup behavior. The unit tests verify serialization, ID generation, grouping, and measure conversion. The documentation and demo explain and exercise the new fitText API. No unrelated change is identified.

Reject negative explicit fit-text groups.

decimalNumber(-1) returns -1, while the first ungrouped run also receives generated ID -1. Adjacent runs with the same ID are merged by withFitted, so an explicit group of -1 can merge with the next ungrouped run and use the first run’s width.
