perf(cleanup): split the latest day off a capped run history first - #624
Conversation
A capped whole-history run search was halved from the Unix epoch, so a history whose runs crowd into the last day reached that day only after about fifteen capped searches. The first split of the whole history now separates its trailing day; every other range, and any history shorter than a day, is still halved, and both halves are always visited. Native HTTP controls reproduce the #612 measurements against a frozen synthetic search that serves only the first 1,000 results: | Workload | Before | After | |----------------------------------|-------:|------:| | 1,001 runs in the last 1,001 s | 52 | 26 | | 10,001 runs across the last year | 141 | 143 | | 1,001 runs across the epoch | 12 | 13 | Every run is returned exactly once in all three. The four existing split fixtures move their right-half runs into the trailing day; the two that assert every run is selected turn off age-based retention so the recent runs stay selectable. Capped-minimum, restart, partition and identity checks are unchanged. Part of #612 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Line 1372: Update the right-partition test fixtures so normal rows and the
duplicate and cross-partition-duplicate cases use recentRun timestamps within
the partition’s cutoff range. Keep the out-of-range case using its 1990
timestamp so the test exercises duplicate detection separately from range
rejection.

The right partition now covers only the trailing day, so its normal rows must be recent runs. Otherwise every row fails the range check first, and the duplicate cases pass without reaching the duplicate checks. The out-of-range case keeps its 1990 timestamp. The reported fixture fix makes both duplicate cases reach the repeated-identity checks. The existing review thread needs no further action. The review gate remains open for ✏️ Learnings added

What I checked, correctness and safety first:
splitPointonly changes where a capped range is cut. The rootvisit(0, upper)is the only call that matcheslower == 0 && upper == snapshotUpper, its cutupper - recentWindowalways satisfieslower <= middle < upper, and every other range keeps plain bisection. Both halves are still visited, so the partitions stay disjoint and together cover[0, upper].- The deletion guards are untouched: a capped split must still recover its advertised minimum, repeated or out-of-range identities still fail, a one-second capped range still fails, and the 10,000-partition limit is unchanged. Nothing here can let a cleanup run on an incomplete inventory.
- Edge cases hold: a history of exactly one day cuts at
0(left[0,0], right[1, 86400]); a shorter history falls back to bisection. - The tests move the capped fixtures into the trailing day and turn age-based retention off where every run must stay selectable, which keeps them exercising the split rather than the age filter. The new
TestRunSearchRequestCountsasserts every run is returned exactly once, not just the request count. - No workflow, permission, token or egress change. All required checks are green at this head.
Verdict: no P0/P1 findings

Why
The shared cleanup job reads every repository's whole run history before it deletes anything, and a busy recent history costs it about twice the GitHub reads it needs. Those reads come out of the same hourly allowance every other automation in the organization uses.
What
Cleanup now looks at the latest day on its own first, which halves the reads for a busy recent history and costs only one or two extra reads for a history spread over a year or more. It still finds every run exactly once, and all of its existing safety refusals are unchanged.
