feat(repo)!: make the bootstrap route profile OS-neutral - #15
Rename the AtomixOS-specific bootstrap names so device bootstrap works with any
OS that serves the provisioning API:
route profile atomixos-bootstrap is now device-bootstrap
ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL is now NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL
server messages and docs refer to the device's provisioning service
a data migration renames stored profiles on devices and remote-access leases
The product page and docs now recommend AtomixOS, which ships a compatible
provisioning service.
BREAKING CHANGE: clients and servers must both run this version, because the
bootstrap route profile name changed. Deployments that set
ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL must rename it to NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The landing page now highlights remote provisioning: upload a first-boot configuration, track delivery, and close the route when provisioning completes.
Updates
Provisioning is described as device-generic. AtomixOS remains supported; other operating systems can support the workflow by implementing the same API.
The bootstrap route is now named device-bootstrap, and saved profile references are updated during migration. Rename customized client profiles when upgrading; clients without the renamed profile fall back to 127.0.0.1:8080.
The provisioning URL setting is now NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL; update deployments using the previous setting name.
Documentation
Setup guidance, feature descriptions, and API references now reflect device bootstrap provisioning.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The client and server now use the device-bootstrap route profile. Server configuration uses NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL, and a reversible migration updates existing profile values. Product text and documentation describe device bootstrap provisioning and its API. Commitlint configuration and its locked dependencies are updated.
The built-in profile, normalization, example configuration, tests, and upgrade guidance use device-bootstrap.
Server provisioning and stored profiles packages/server/config/runtime.exs, packages/server/lib/nixstasis/provisioning*, packages/server/lib/nixstasis/types/provisioning_delivery_state.ex, packages/server/priv/repo/migrations/*device_bootstrap_provisioning.exs, packages/server/priv/repo/migrations/20261027120000_rename_device_bootstrap_profile.exs, packages/server/test/nixstasis/*, deploy/compose/README.md, deploy/compose/docker-compose.yml
The server uses the renamed route and provisioning-service terminology. A reversible migration updates stored profile values. Runtime and Compose configuration use the renamed base URL variable.
Provisioning documentation and product text website/docs/features/device-bootstrap-provisioning/*, website/docs/modules/*, website/docs/reference/openapi/*, website/docs/client-server-interface.md, website/docs/features/server-provided-frps-token/design.md, website/docs/operations/upgrades-rollbacks.md, site/index.html, pyproject.toml
Documentation and product text describe device bootstrap provisioning, its route, and its provisioning service. AtomixOS is identified as supported, and other operating systems may implement the API.

Reviewed commit d03bb91 (feat: make the bootstrap route profile OS-neutral).
Summary: renames the client/server bootstrap route profile from atomixos-bootstrap to device-bootstrap and the server env var from ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL to NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL, across Go client config, Elixir server provisioning code, config example, docs, OpenAPI reference, and site pages. Adds migration 20261027120000_rename_device_bootstrap_profile.exs to rename the stored profile (with a down migration back to the old name).
Checks run on the PR branch:
go vet ./internal/config/ (packages/client): PASS
go test ./internal/config/ (packages/client): PASS
Grep for leftovers: no remaining atomixos-bootstrap outside the new migration itself (where the old name is intentionally referenced for up/down), and no remaining ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL.
Nix builds skipped per watch policy (too slow); no shell scripts or workflow files changed, so shellcheck/shfmt/actionlint did not apply.
No issues found. One note: operators with the old env var set will need to switch to NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL, since the old name is no longer read.
Forward NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL to the server container.
The README documents this variable as an optional Compose override, and the server reads it at runtime. The nixstasis service does not list it in environment or env_file, so setting it for Compose does not reach the server.

Reviewed new head 619f24f ("docs(client): note the bootstrap profile rename for customized configs") on feat/generic-device-bootstrap.
Summary: OS-neutral rename sweep — atomixos-bootstrap → device-bootstrap (profile name, Go constant DeviceBootstrapProfileName, server @route_profile) and ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL → NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL, applied consistently across the Go client, Elixir server, example config, docs, OpenAPI, and site copy. Also renames the 20260807052009 migration file and the atomixos-bootstrap-provisioning docs section to match (Ecto tracks migrations by version number, so the file rename is safe).
What looks good:
New migration 20261027120000_rename_device_bootstrap_profile renames stored profiles in devices (remote_access_profile, remote_access_default_profile) and remote_access_leases, with a matching down migration.
No stale references left in client Go/YAML or server lib/config: the only remaining atomixos-bootstrap strings are the intentional migration strings and upgrade notes.
The client README now warns that a customized /etc/nixstasis/config.yaml profile must be renamed manually, since the client otherwise falls back to the built-in 127.0.0.1:8080 target — that manual step is the one thing to double-check at rollout, as the server migration only covers DB rows, not on-device config files.
Checks run on this head (clone of feat/generic-device-bootstrap):
go vet ./... (packages/client): PASS, no findings.
go test ./... (packages/client): PASS, all packages ok.
gofmt: changed Go files already formatted.
No shell scripts or GitHub workflow files changed, so shellcheck/actionlint not applicable. Nix builds skipped (too slow, per watch policy). Elixir server tests were not run (outside this watch's check set).

Automated PR-commit-watch review for new head 0fa4540 (feat(repo)!: make the bootstrap route profile OS-neutral).
Summary: Renames the bootstrap route profile from atomixos-bootstrap to device-bootstrap across the Go client (DeviceBootstrapProfileName), the Elixir server (NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL, @route_profile), docs, and the example config, plus a new 20261027120000 migration that renames stored device/lease profiles. The client README and upgrade docs flag the breaking change: customized copies of the old profile in /etc/nixstasis/config.yaml must be renamed or the client falls back to the built-in 127.0.0.1:8080 target. Site copy now frames this as AtomixOS provisioning support other OSes can implement, which matches the rename intent.
Checks run on a shallow clone of feat/generic-device-bootstrap at this commit:
go vet ./internal/config/ (packages/client): PASS
go test ./internal/config/ -count=1: PASS
gofmt on the three changed Go files: clean, no output
No changed shell scripts or GitHub workflow files in this diff, so shellcheck/shfmt/actionlint were N/A
Nix/Elixir builds skipped per watch policy (too slow); not verified here
Grep for leftover atomixos-bootstrap / AtomixOSBootstrapProfileName / ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL: clean except intentional historical mentions (the upgrade doc, the README former-name note, and the new migration itself, which must reference the old name to rename it)
Notes (non-blocking): the renamed 20260807 migration keeps its original version timestamp, so Ecto should not re-run it, but worth confirming against a database where it was already applied before merging. No other issues spotted in this diff.

Reviewed new commit d08811d since the last review (0fa4540): fix(deploy) forwards NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL into the nixstasis Compose service with an empty default, so the documented optional override actually reaches the server.
Verified:
The variable name matches exactly what packages/server/config/runtime.exs reads via Deployment.optional_env("NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL").
deploy/compose/README.md already documents the variable, so docs and wiring now agree.
The entry follows the same ${VAR:-} pattern as neighboring optional env entries.
Checks run:
YAML parse of deploy/compose/docker-compose.yml: pass.
No Go, shell, or workflow files changed in this commit, so go vet/test, shellcheck, and actionlint were not applicable.
Nix build skipped per watch rules (too slow).
No issues found. One-line change, consistent with the surrounding config.

New commit reviewed (aaa3c95, "docs(site): state the provisioning API and AtomixOS client opt-in precisely") — docs-only delta since the last reviewed head (d08811d):
Corrects the site copy: the nixstasis client ships in an AtomixOS image only when Nixstasis is turned on in the build configuration, not pre-installed by default.
Tightens the provisioning API spec in the device-bootstrap docs: other OSes must implement HEAD /api/config (2xx or 405 once the route is ready) plus POST /api/config and the job resource on the device-bootstrap route, with a link to the full upload sequence.
No code, config, or workflow changes in this commit, so nothing here affects runtime behavior.

Automated review of new commit b72f687 (feat: make the bootstrap route profile OS-neutral).
Summary: Renames the bootstrap FRP profile from atomixos-bootstrap to device-bootstrap and the env var from ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL to NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL across the Go client (route_profile.go, config tests, example config), the Elixir server (provisioning.ex, runtime.exs, audit/delivery/types), compose (docker-compose.yml), and docs/site. Adds migration 20261027120000_rename_device_bootstrap_profile.exs to rename the stored profile, with a reversible down migration. Docs call out the upgrade step: customized /etc/nixstasis/config.yaml copies must be renamed, since a client finding no device-bootstrap profile falls back to the built-in 127.0.0.1:8080 target.
Checks run on this checkout (branch feat/generic-device-bootstrap @ b72f687):
go vet ./... (packages/client): PASS
go test -count=1 ./internal/config/: PASS
gofmt -l internal/config/: clean
No shell scripts or GitHub workflow files changed in this diff, so shellcheck/shfmt/actionlint were not applicable (compose YAML is not a workflow file).
Nix builds skipped per watch policy (too slow); Elixir server tests were not run in this environment.
Static review notes:
The rename looks consistent: no code references to the old profile name remain in packages/client/internal or packages/server/lib; remaining atomixos-bootstrap mentions are intentional (the migration itself and the upgrade note in the client README / upgrades doc).
One thing to double-check on rollout: any deployed environment still exporting ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL will silently lose its provisioning-base override, since runtime.exs now reads only NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL (compose passes the new name with an empty default). Worth a mention in the release notes alongside the config.yaml rename.
No functional logic change spotted beyond the rename; the provisioning flow, lease handling, and 127.0.0.1:8080/localhost target are unchanged.
c0ee101 — fix(tooling): accept breaking-change headers in commit messages
Adds a commitlint parserPreset to package.json so the documented <type>(<scope>)!: <summary> form parses. The headerPattern allows an optional ! before the colon, and breakingHeaderPattern requires it, so only ! headers are marked breaking; scope/type/length rules are untouched. This matches the PR's own feat(repo)!: title, which previously would have failed the commit-msg hook. Looks correct.
3e8fcb5 — build(tooling): update locked tool versions
Routine lockfile refresh: mise.lock moves to lockfile format 3, tool bumps (go 1.27.3, node 24.22.2, hk 2.9.0, goreleaser 2.19.0, pkl 0.32.2, rumdl 0.3.0, uv 0.13.6, @commitlint/cli 21.2.4). The commitlint lock directory rename (21.2.3 -> 21.2.4) is consistent with its package.json pin and the regenerated aube-lock.yaml. Generated-file churn only; nothing hand-edited in the lockfiles stood out.
Checks run
package.json parses as JSON; commitlint parserPreset present: pass
Lock-dir consistency (21.2.4 pin vs renamed aube-lock.yaml): pass
Changed files are config/lockfiles only — no shell scripts or workflows changed, so shellcheck/actionlint had nothing to run
Nix builds skipped per watch policy (too slow); commitlint itself was not executed here, so the new parserPreset is reviewed by inspection, not by a live lint run

Reviewed new commit 3622cc3 "build(tooling): update locked tool versions" (head moved from 3e8fcb5, which is no longer in the branch history — the branch appears to have been rebased since the last check, so this review covers the new head commit).
What changed: only generated lockfiles — mise.lock (now lockfile format 3) plus the commitlint lock directory renamed 21.2.3 -> 21.2.4. No Go code, shell scripts, workflows, or docs touched.
Checks:
Lockfile-only change, so go vet / go test, shellcheck, and actionlint are not applicable (no files of those kinds changed). Nix build skipped per watch rules (too slow).
Verified every version claimed in the commit message is present in mise.lock: go 1.27.3, node 24.22.2, hk 2.9.0, goreleaser 2.19.0, pkl 0.32.2, rumdl 0.3.0, uv 0.13.6, and @commitlint/cli 21.2.4 — all match, with per-platform checksums and URLs updated to the new releases.
Old commitlint lock directory (21.2.3) is fully replaced by 21.2.4; working tree is clean after checkout.
One observation, not a blocker: the new commitlint lock drops the typescript 7.0.2 platform packages and @types/node that 21.2.3 carried, so if commitlint starts behaving differently around TypeScript configs, that dependency pruning is the first place to look.
commitlint had no parser preset, so its default header pattern rejected
the `<type>(<scope>)!: <summary>` form that AGENTS.md documents for
breaking changes, failing the commit-msg hook.
- Add a parserPreset whose header pattern allows an optional `!` and
whose breakingHeaderPattern marks such commits as breaking
- Scope, type, and length rules are unchanged
Rename the AtomixOS-specific bootstrap names so device bootstrap works with any
OS that serves the provisioning API:
- route profile `atomixos-bootstrap` is now `device-bootstrap`
- `ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL` is now `NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL`
- server messages and docs refer to the device's provisioning service
- a data migration renames stored profiles on devices and remote-access leases
- the client README and upgrade notes say customized configs must rename the
profile, or the client falls back to the built-in target
The product page and docs now recommend AtomixOS, which ships a compatible
provisioning service.
BREAKING CHANGE: clients and servers must both run this version, because the
bootstrap route profile name changed. Deployments that set
ATOMIXOS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL must rename it to NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL.
- Present remote provisioning as AtomixOS support that other operating
systems can add by implementing the same provisioning API
- List the API another OS must serve on its device-bootstrap route: the
HEAD /api/config readiness probe (2xx or 405), POST /api/config, and its
job resource, with a link to the full upload sequence
- Say the nixstasis client ships in AtomixOS images when Nixstasis is
turned on in the build configuration; it is off by default
The Compose README documents NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL as an
optional override and the server reads it at runtime, but the nixstasis
service never passed it into the container, so setting it had no effect.
Refresh mise.lock (now lockfile format 3) and the commitlint lock
directory to the current latest releases:
- go 1.27.3, node 24.22.2, hk 2.9.0, goreleaser 2.19.0
- pkl 0.32.2, rumdl 0.3.0, uv 0.13.6
- @commitlint/cli 21.2.4

Reviewed the latest push (head 56a04c1). Note: the branch was rebased since the last review, so the previously seen head is no longer in history; this review covers the three new commits on top of the OS-neutral bootstrap commit.
New commits:
a1bd95a docs: reframes bootstrap provisioning as AtomixOS support other OSes can add, listing the API surface (HEAD /api/config readiness probe, POST /api/config, job resource) and noting the client ships in AtomixOS images only when Nixstasis is enabled in build config (off by default). Wording is accurate and the anchor to the upload sequence checks out.
bd067c7 fix(deploy): passes NIXSTASIS_PROVISIONING_BASE_URL into the nixstasis Compose service. Verified the gap was real: the server reads this var at runtime (packages/server/config/runtime.exs:85) and the Compose README documents it, but the service never forwarded it, so the override previously had no effect. One-line fix, correct placement alongside the other env passthroughs.
56a04c1 build(tooling): lockfile refresh only (mise.lock to format 3, commitlint 21.2.3 -> 21.2.4, plus go/node/hk/goreleaser/pkl/rumdl/uv bumps). No code changes.
Checks run:
deploy/compose/docker-compose.yml parses as valid YAML after the change: pass.
No Go, shell, or workflow files changed in these commits, so go vet/test, shellcheck/shfmt, and actionlint were not applicable. No Nix builds run (skipped per watch policy).
No issues found. The Compose fix closes a real config gap; the docs change reads cleanly.
