Snapmaker Studio

Snapmaker Studio

License: MIT Python 3.13 Release Status: beta

The Intelligence Layer for Open 3D Printing.

Project Doctor. Printer Hub. Cost Doctor — Studio checks every model, surfaces likely print risks, estimates cost, and helps you price it, before your U1 ever sees it.

Independent open-source project — not affiliated with or endorsed by Snapmaker. "Snapmaker" is a trademark of its respective owner.

Snapmaker Studio is a friendly, local-first desktop app (plus a scriptable engine and CLI) that reads the real geometry of 3D designs from common STL/3MF sources and walks it through the whole pre-print workflow:

  1. Understand — colors, size, volume, complexity, source ecosystem, and a Design Health read on the actual mesh, in plain language.
  2. Validate — will it print? Watertight check, hole detection, geometry integrity, overhang/supports prediction, stability/tip-risk, and bed fit — each with what was found, why it matters, and what to do.
  3. Prepare — make a prepared U1 profile copy — review in Orca before slicing. Your originals are never changed.
  4. Monitor & control — watch your printer's live status, and with an explicit confirmation pause/resume/cancel/start a print or upload sliced gcode.

It's not a converter — it's the layer that surfaces the likely print risks, and why, before you waste filament, so you can decide what to fix. (Preparing a U1 profile copy is just one step.) It's advisory: it doesn't guarantee a print.

Runs entirely on your machine. No cloud, no account, no upload — local-first and open source.

Who it's for: Snapmaker U1 owners — especially beginners working with multicolor or support-heavy prints — who want to diagnose, prepare, troubleshoot, and estimate a print before opening the slicer.

What it's not: not a slicer and not a guarantee of print success. Studio gives advisory readiness checks and guidance; Orca slices and the U1 prints. Studio can monitor your U1 and, with an explicit confirmation each time, control a print (pause/resume/cancel/start/emergency-stop) — it never auto-starts and does not control Orca.

Independent open-source project — not affiliated with or endorsed by Snapmaker. Internal validation corpus: 112/112 files produced structurally valid U1 profile copies in the internal validation gate — this is not a print-success guarantee (see PROOF.md). Download

⬇ Download the latest Windows installer — one click, no Python, runs offline. (Beta — Windows 10/11 x64.)

Open the downloaded …_x64-setup.exe, install, and launch Snapmaker Studio. No account, no cloud, nothing leaves your computer. Older builds and checksums are on the Releases page.

What's new in beta.20 — page-by-page product-truth audit

beta.20 sweeps every route so readiness wording is honest: "U1-ready / ready to slice / clean / safe / fixed / validated / passed" no longer appear from a profile verdict or structure validation alone. A converted copy reads "U1 profile copy saved · open in Orca and review before slicing". Studio does not slice; originals are never modified; no print-success guarantees. See RELEASE_NOTES.md.

Point releases beta.20.1–beta.20.4 add Printer Hub honesty, manual cost entry, collision honesty, STL Project Doctor consistency, and a release-acceptance/trust cleanup. beta.21 simplifies Simple mode to five nav items and adds a beginner Fix Plan — see RELEASE_NOTES.md and TRUST_STATUS.md.

Earlier betas

beta.18 is a polish pass: less crowded pages, shorter beginner copy. Find Models leads with "Browse approved model sites inside Studio" (policy details collapse into a note); the cost calculator is a simple form — enter your spool price, advanced costs (electricity, machine, labour, fees, shipping) tuck under "Advanced." Plus a print-hours field and material-type density. Safety/technical detail moved into expandable notes — no change to local-first, no-cloud, no-slicing, no-guarantee principles.

beta.17.1 makes the business tools ask for your numbers — an editable Material & business assumptions panel (filament price, electricity, machine, labour, fees, markup; saved locally) — gives the First Layer Doctor real per-file evidence, and states the Scale Doctor's STL-only export limit up front. Estimates are rough and depend on your inputs — not financial advice.

beta.17 turned two Doctors from advice into action — they create a real file you can open in Snapmaker Orca, and your original is never changed:

  • Scale Doctor — Prepare scaled copy. Pick a recommended (or custom) scale and Studio writes a new scaled copy, e.g. model_scaled_128_U1.3mf, with the scaled dimensions, U1 fit, validation, and Open-in-Orca / Copy path / Run Project Doctor. STL input is supported now; for 3MF, preview here and resize in Orca (verified 3MF export is coming).
  • Compatibility Doctor — Prepare U1 copy. When a project carries another printer's settings, one click makes a clean Snapmaker U1 copy so Orca opens it with U1-safe settings — no more dead end at "here's what's wrong."

Carried forward: hardware-verified Printer Hub, Print Quality evidence grounded in your own file, Plate Color Remap, Source Check, Model Browser. All local, advisory — no cloud, no account, no guarantees. Studio does not slice; Orca does.

  • Release: v0.4.0-beta.21.1
  • Installer: Snapmaker.Studio_0.4.0-beta.21.1_x64-setup.exe
  • Size: 16,136,737 bytes
  • SHA256: 53f5de884f5e39eba7843deeda119c44049043cb3cc5b8323cf6ce95ba22bf22
  • Canonical release metadata: docs/RELEASE_METADATA.md
  • Unsigned beta: the installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show “Unknown publisher.” That is expected for this beta. Download only from the release link above and verify the SHA256 before installing.

Install:

  1. Download the .exe from the release page.

Why

Designs from popular slicers and model sites don't always open cleanly on a given printer — and novices often can't tell why, or whether a file will even print. Snapmaker Studio closes that gap: open any design and get a plain-language read on what's in it, a readiness check, and a prepared U1 profile copy (review in Orca before slicing) — without losing detail, painted regions, or multi-color assignments. The Snapmaker U1 is the first printer target; the workflow is built to grow across ecosystems.

What's inside

  • Design Health — real geometry analysis of the actual mesh: watertight check, hole detection, manifold/normals integrity, overhang → supports prediction, stability/tip-risk, and bed fit — each as a badge with what was found, why it matters, and what to do. Volume + an honest material estimate too. Slice-free, cross-ecosystem, in plain language.
  • Project Intelligence — read-only design data: dimensions, volume, triangle count and complexity, detected materials/colors, object and plate counts, and the source ecosystem. No guesswork, no fake data.
  • Validation Center — a readiness check that answers the questions a novice actually has: will it print, what's preserved, what changes, and what's at risk? — now backed by the Design Health geometry checks above.
  • Prepare — make a U1 profile copy in one click — review in Orca before slicing. Originals are never overwritten; every change is recorded.
  • Printer Hub — discover a networked Snapmaker U1 over its open, LAN-trusted interface and watch live status: print state, progress, bed and toolhead temperatures, history, health. Safe control: pause, resume, cancel, upload sliced gcode, and start — start/cancel/emergency-stop each require an explicit confirmation. Studio never auto-starts a print and uploads sliced gcode only (it does not slice).
  • Design Library — everything you open is checked, scored, and kept with its full history, so you always know what's ready.
  • Engine + CLI — the same workflow as a pure-Python engine and u1convert CLI for scripting and automation.

What makes it different

  • Design-first and novice-friendly. It explains a design in plain language and surfaces likely print risks — before you ever open a slicer.
  • Local-first. Everything runs on your machine. No cloud, no account, no upload.
  • Multi-ecosystem foundation. Bambu, OrcaSlicer, and plain STL are first-class today; PrusaSlicer files are detected (full preservation is on the roadmap). The engine is built around a source-neutral model so more ecosystems can follow.
  • Preservation-first. Geometry, painting, and color are kept faithfully. Studio never silently drops colors or detail — and when it can't guarantee a faithful result, it stops and tells you why.
  • Open printer opportunity. The U1 runs open, LAN-trusted firmware, which lets Studio provide local Printer Hub monitoring and user-confirmed control/send without cloud accounts.

Compatibility

Input Status Result
Bambu / Orca .3mf project ✅ supported prepared Snapmaker U1 .3mf (review in Orca)
.stl model ✅ supported prepared Snapmaker U1 .3mf (review in Orca)
PrusaSlicer .3mf 🚧 detected read & understood; full conversion planned
.obj / .glb 🚧 planned

First printer target: Snapmaker U1. Open the result in Snapmaker Orca to slice and print. More printer targets are planned — see the roadmap.

Quick start (30 seconds)

Most people just install the desktop app (above). For scripting, the engine ships a CLI. Install from source (PyPI package coming later):

pip install -e backend

Then, using the bundled example:

# Understand any file first — read-only, never modifies it
u1convert doctor examples/sample_cube_U1.3mf

# Prepare a U1 profile copy from a plain STL (review in Orca before slicing)
u1convert repair examples/sample_cube.stl -o my_part_U1.3mf

Open the result in Snapmaker Orca to slice and print. More samples live in examples/.

Everyday commands:

u1convert repair model.3mf --mode u1 -o model_U1.3mf # prepare a U1 profile copy
u1convert validate model_U1.3mf # check integrity

Will my file print on the U1?

doctor is a read-only readiness check — it never modifies your file:

$ u1convert doctor model.3mf

  Verdict : REPAIRABLE
  Score : 90/100
  Project type : Bambu/Orca project
  Snapmaker U1 compatible : yes
  Notes :
    - incompatible slicer value: wall_filament=0

Recommended action: Run `u1convert repair <file> --mode u1` to prepare a U1 profile copy.
Read-only check - no files were modified.

Verdicts: READY (loads as-is) · REPAIRABLE (run repair) · CONVERTIBLE (an STL — run repair) · HIGH_RISK (not a usable project). Add --json for machine-readable output.

What changed between two projects?

diff is a read-only comparison — handy to see what preparing a file actually changed:

$ u1convert diff original.3mf converted.3mf

  Structure : +2 parts / -0
  Geometry : unchanged
  Objects 1->1  Plates 1->1  Colors 4->5
  Painting  : 0 -> 0 painted triangles
  Settings : 37 changed, 0 added, 0 removed
    printer_model: 'Bambu Lab P1S' -> 'Snapmaker U1'
... (use --json for the full list)

It reports structure, geometry, settings, and counts. Add --json for the full machine-readable diff.

Architecture

Local-first, no network. Layers:

  • Enginesnapstudio_core, pure Python (no net, no UI): detect → understand → validate → prepare, preserving geometry/painting/color. A source-neutral canonical model is the seam for multi-ecosystem support.
  • Local APIsnapstudio_api, a loopback (127.0.0.1) JSON server, request-authenticated, frozen with PyInstaller into a single sidecar binary (no Python install needed).
  • Desktop app — Tauri (Rust) + React + TypeScript. Spawns the sidecar as a child process (zero orphans on exit) and talks to it over loopback.
  • CLIu1convert exposes the same engine for scripting/automation.

Workflow everywhere: Understand → Validate → Prepare → Monitor — validation is mandatory and never removed. Full detail in docs/ARCHITECTURE.md.

Roadmap

Shipped (beta): desktop app (Project Intelligence · Validation Center · Prepare · Batch · Design Library · Printer Hub monitor + user-confirmed control/send), engine + CLI, one-click Windows installer with bundled engine.

Next:

  • Preserve PrusaSlicer multi-material through preparation (detection ships today)
  • OBJ and GLB input
  • More printer targets beyond the U1
  • A stable API for third-party integration

See CHANGELOG.md for release history and docs/ROADMAP.md for the full plan. Nothing above overstates what ships today: multi-printer support and full Prusa preservation are roadmap, not done.
