test(example): assert per-module conformance verdicts, not just any login (#467) - #469
Conversation
…ogin (#467) The harness gated an entire RP plan on `expect(successfulLogins, greaterThan(0))`, which only proves SOME module logged in. A negative module such as oidcc-client-test-missing-athash that WRONGLY logs in stayed invisible to that aggregate as long as any other module in the plan still passed -- which is exactly how the implicit-flow at_hash gap shipped green in #447's CI. Confirmed against real CI logs (linux job 111467190263, windows job 111467190350) that api/runner/{id} (the existing getTestStatus call, used only for null-result diagnostics) returns just the TestRunner's live browser-interaction state -- owner/created/browser/name/exposed/ id/error/updated -- with no status or result key at all. The suite's own OpenAPI document (frontend/src/api/openapi.json in openid/conformance-suite) names api/info/{id} as the endpoint that carries status and result, matching TestModule.Status/TestModule.Result in the suite's Java source (confirmed from its GitHub mirror). That endpoint was already wired as the unused `getTestSummary` helper. Adds `pollConformanceModuleVerdict`, which polls api/info/{id} until a terminal status (FINISHED/INTERRUPTED) or a bounded 15s timeout, and wires a per-module assertion into runOidcConformanceTest alongside the existing aggregate guard: a module's result must be PASSED, WARNING, REVIEW or SKIPPED (the same set certification.openid.net itself accepts for a profile) or the plan fails naming that module and its result. No local polarity table is needed -- the suite's own verdict is directly usable. Unit-tests the new pure classification (isAcceptableConformanceResult, isTerminalConformanceStatus) in conformance_module_verdict_test.dart. No library changes; confined to the example's conformance harness. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
A thrown exception from the verdict poll aborts the whole plan.
pollConformanceModuleVerdict calls getTestSummary, and getTestSummary calls dio.getUri. A transient DioException from api/info/{id} is not caught here. The exception skips the log archive for this module. It also skips sub.cancel() and the later modules. It also skips the moduleFailures report.
The nearby getTestStatus call is wrapped in try/catch for this reason. Catch the error and record it as a module failure. The plan then continues, and the final assertion reports every failed module.
The same applies to the discovery-only call at Line 671.

…467) Fixes the two non-library Config RP module gaps confirmed against real CI output (run 37252425838, head 0e8cd12, linux+windows): - oidcc-client-test-discovery-jwks-uri-keys: the suite's own module source (OIDCCClientTestDiscoveryJwksUriKeys.java) fires finished the instant it has seen BOTH the discovery and jwks_uri requests -- before a normal login's own userinfo call. package:oidc defaults OidcUserInfoSettings.sendUserInfoRequest to true, so that userinfo call used to arrive after the suite had already finished the module, which the suite answered with "Illegal test state change: FINISHED -> RUNNING" and turned an otherwise-correct login into FAILED. conformanceManager() now takes a sendUserInfoRequest flag, and the harness builds exactly this module's manager with it disabled. - oidcc-client-test-signing-key-rotation: the suite's module source (OIDCCClientTestSigningKeyRotation.java) rotates its signing key only once a SECOND authorize request arrives, and will not finish without a second userinfo + jwks round trip after it. The harness only ever drove one login, so the module sat at status=WAITING forever. It now issues a second login for exactly this module; package:oidc_core already self-heals the rotated key on its own (one rate-limited, cache-busting jwks refetch on a kid miss, OIDC Core §10.1.1), so no library change was needed. oidcc-client-test-discovery-issuer-mismatch is left red on purpose: it is a real library defect being fixed on fix/discovery-issuer-validation (not merged), not a harness gap. Hardening, per CodeRabbit + reviewer feedback on this PR: - pollConformanceModuleVerdict's poll timeout widens 15s -> 30s: run 37252425838 hit the old bound's WAITING ceiling for oidcc-client-test-session-management on BOTH linux and windows, and that module passed on an unrelated retry -- the suite was still working, not stuck, when 15s gave up on it. - Each api/info/{id} read is now retried with a short bounded backoff (retryTransientConformancePollErrors) on a transient error (isTransientConformancePollError: timeouts, connection errors, 5xx) rather than letting it escape pollConformanceModuleVerdict and fail the rest of the plan. A read that still fails after that (or a non-transient error) degrades to a verdict map carrying pollError instead of throwing, so a timeout -- transient-poll-induced or genuine -- still ends in the same named per-module failure as before, never an uncaught exception. New pure logic is unit-tested in conformance_module_driving_test.dart: moduleFinishesBeforeUserinfo, requiresSecondLoginForKeyRotation, isTransientConformancePollError and retryTransientConformancePollErrors's retry/backoff decision (injectable millisecond delays, no real waits or mocked Dio needed). flutter test (120/120) and flutter analyze (no issues) both clean in packages/oidc/example. …nt it (#467) The oidcc-client-rp-session-management-rp-basic plan's one module, oidcc-client-test-session-management, cannot pass on native platforms: it requires at least one HTTP request to check_session_iframe (plus a postMessage call) before AND after logout, and package:oidc never makes one there. Confirmed against the suite's own public log for CI run 37273454165 (linux instance LGM4mkXj5oBdTTq, windows instance 4l3cX3OUWBhPQYg): the RP's observed sequence was discovery -> authorize -> token -> jwks -> userinfo -> end_session_endpoint, with ZERO check_session_iframe requests at any point, so the module sits at status=WAITING forever regardless of the poll timeout. This is a real, deliberate scope boundary, not a harness bug (decision made and user-approved after research): - RFC 8252 section 8.12 requires native apps to run login in an EXTERNAL user-agent, never an embedded WebView, so there is no app-controlled browser surface to host check_session_iframe in. - Even an app-controlled WebView created purely for session polling would not help: OpenID Connect Session Management 1.0 section 3.2 computes check_session_iframe's answer from the OP session cookie held by whichever user-agent is loading it, and that cookie lives in the EXTERNAL browser the section 8.12 login happened in, not in a separate WebView the app might create. - package:oidc's own monitorSessionStatus already reflects this split: oidc_web_core implements the real iframe + postMessage flow; oidc_desktop / oidc_android / oidc_darwin each return Stream.empty(), already tested and documented as intentional in their own library_surface_test.dart files. The harness never even called it for any platform, including web. Changes: - integration_test/shared_e2e.dart: adds isSessionManagementConformancePlan and supportsSessionManagement (== kIsWeb), and a markTestSkipped gate for the plan on non-web, with the precise reason above. Web is untouched and keeps running the plan for real -- its own session-monitoring fix is tracked separately. - test/conformance_plan_variant_test.dart: unit tests for both new predicates. - packages/oidc/README.md and docs/oidc-usage.md: state the native limitation plainly next to the existing "(Web only)" mention, and point to the native alternatives for noticing a session that ended at the OP -- OidcTokenRefreshFailedEvent, OidcUserInfoFailedEvent (both verified to exist in packages/oidc_core/lib/src/models/events/), Front/Back-Channel Logout, and OpenID Connect Native SSO for Mobile Apps. flutter test (123/123) and flutter analyze (no issues) both clean in packages/oidc/example. Limit the next-token-use warning to refresh and UserInfo checks. Both sections describe Front-Channel and Back-Channel Logout as OP-pushed alternatives, then say that every alternative fires only on the next token use. That timing guidance can cause readers to overlook a pushed logout signal.

…module oidcc-client-test-discovery-issuer-mismatch requires the RP to stop after fetching discovery. Now that oidc_core does that by throwing from init(), the unguarded `await manager.init()` aborted the whole Config RP plan on every platform (run 37298202788). For that module only, catch the OidcException, record it as the expected outcome, clean up and move on to the next module. Any other module's init failure still aborts as before. After the loop, assert that the module, if it ran, was rejected, so a regression that accepts the document fails the job. PR #469 (test/467-per-module-conformance) edits the same init block; the change is fenced with a NOTE comment so the merge is a single hunk. The web job runs oidcc-client-rp-session-management-rp-basic for real (every other platform is markTestSkipped, #467/#469), and its one module, oidcc-client-test-session-management, was stuck at status=WAITING result=null: the job log (run for PR head 8977cc4) showed login immediately followed by logout, with zero check_session_iframe traffic at any point. Root cause: OidcSessionManagementSettings.enabled defaults to false, and it gates EVERYTHING OIDC Session Management 1.0 needs here -- user_manager_base.dart's listenToUserSessionIfSupported (the automatic post-login check_session_iframe monitor, wired to userChanges) and startEndSessionConfirmation (the post-logout probe called from handleEndSessionResponse) both return immediately when it's false, and the logout-state builder nulls out session_state the same way. The harness never turned it on, so none of this ever ran, on any platform, ever. Confirmed against the suite's own module source (OIDCCClientTestSessionManagement.java / AbstractOIDCCClientLogoutTest.java, openid-certification/conformance-suite): it will not finish until the suite observes a postMessage round trip BEFORE and AFTER logout, which it learns about only when check_session_iframe's own page calls back to get_session_state (LogGetSessionStateRequest logs "OP iframe received postMessage request from RP iframe") -- loading the iframe alone is not enough. Fix, scoped to exactly this one module: - manager.dart: conformanceManager() gains sessionManagementEnabled (default false, unchanged for every other module), setting OidcSessionManagementSettings.enabled. - api.dart: requiresSessionManagementMonitoring(moduleName) identifies the module; isSessionCheckPostMessageLogEntry(msg) recognises the suite's own confirmation message; waitForSuiteLogEntry polls the suite's log (fetchTestLogs) for it instead of sleeping a guessed duration that would either race monitorSessionStatus's own schedule (iframe load, then sessionManagementSettings.interval) or waste every other module's time budget. - shared_e2e.dart: builds this module's manager with session management enabled, and after a successful login waits (via waitForSuiteLogEntry) for the suite's pre-logout confirmation before calling logout() -- the post-logout probe needs no extra wait, since it runs in the background and pollConformanceModuleVerdict's existing 30s poll already gives it room. No library change needed: package:oidc already implements all of this end-to-end (web_core's monitorSessionStatus, user_manager_base.dart's wiring, #475's post-logout probe) -- the harness just never turned it on or waited for it. New pure logic unit-tested in conformance_module_driving_test.dart: requiresSessionManagementMonitoring and isSessionCheckPostMessageLogEntry. flutter test (130/130) and flutter analyze (no issues) both clean in packages/oidc/example. 🌐 Web query:
official Dio 5 documentation BaseOptions connectTimeout receiveTimeout default null no timeout
💡 Result:
**Mostly yes.** The current official Dio API documents both `BaseOptions.connectTimeout` and `BaseOptions.receiveTimeout` as nullable `Duration`s. Dio’s documentation says `null` (or `Duration.zero`) means **no timeout limit**. ([pub.dev](https://pub.dev/documentation/dio/latest/dio/BaseOptions-class.html?utm_source=openai))
So, when those options are left at their default `null`, Dio imposes **no timeout limit** for connection or receiving. The API page confirms they’re nullable; the package docs establish what `null` means. This is the current published docs (Dio 5.11.1), not a pinned Dio 5.x release. Dio 5.3.3 BaseOptions connectTimeout receiveTimeout default null timeout source code
💡 Result:
In **Dio 5.3.3**, `BaseOptions` declares both timeout parameters as nullable `Duration`s with no explicit default:
```dart
Duration? connectTimeout,
Duration? receiveTimeout,
```
The constructor assigns `connectTimeout` directly and passes `receiveTimeout` to its superclass configuration. So, when omitted, **both default to `null`**—meaning no timeout limit, as the source comments specify. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cfug/dio/dio_v5.3.3/dio/lib/src/options.dart))
`connectTimeout` applies while opening the URL; `receiveTimeout` applies during response data transfer, per byte—not to the total receive duration. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cfug/dio/dio_v5.3.3/dio/lib/src/options.dart))

Bound the suite requests.
waitForSuiteLogEntry checks its 20-second deadline only after fetchTestLogs and its retries return. pollConformanceModuleVerdict also waits for _pollSummaryTolerant before checking its 30-second deadline. The shared Dio client has no connection or receive timeout, so a stalled GET can keep either poll waiting beyond its deadline and block the integration run. Set finite Dio timeouts so stalled requests return control to the existing failure handling.

On iOS the per-module failure message is the only harness output that reaches the job log: patrol forwards no Dart print/logging there. A negative hybrid module stuck at status=WAITING, result=null therefore could not say whether the suite ever received its authorization request or received it and never fired its own waitTimeoutSeconds finish (AbstractOIDCCClientTest.startWaitingForTimeout only finishes when the status is still WAITING at that instant). A rejected verdict now carries a digest of the module's suite log -- every request block it opened, timed from the first authorization request on the suite's own clock, plus the last entries -- and the client side reports how long the login took and what it threw. The first digest run (37380923417) showed the iOS stalls are not the suite's negative-module timer: oidcc-client-test-missing-iat had NO authorization request after the client's 31.6s, and oidcc-client-test-idtoken-sig-none received its authorization request roughly 50s after discovery -- after the 30s flowTimeoutSeconds had already cancelled the session. To pin down where that time goes, the failure line now also carries the native browser events (opening/opened/redirectReceived/cancelled, timed from the login start) and when the first authorization request reached the suite relative to the client's login start. The iOS job also streams the simulator's unified log (the app's "flutter:" print lines plus AuthenticationServices / SafariViewService) to an artifact, since patrol forwards no Dart output there. The intermittent iOS-only WAITING verdicts are not the suite's negative-module timer and not the client's id_token handling. The iOS simulator's SafariViewService sometimes takes tens of seconds to get a WebKit WebContent process loading the authorize URL, and the harness's 30s flowTimeoutSeconds races it. Simulator unified log, run 37384969496 (oidcc-client-test-missing-iat, hybrid): session presented 23:09:53.86; runningboard launch request for WebKit.WebContent 23:10:15.47, response 23:10:21.10; navigation to .../authorize 23:10:23.41 (+29.6s); redirect 23:10:24.31. It squeaked in. In run 37380923417 it did not: missing-iat's session was cancelled with NO authorization request reaching the suite, and idtoken-sig-none's request arrived ~49.5s in, after the client had given up. Both left status=WAITING, result=null. iOS now gets 90s, just under twice the worst observed start. It costs nothing when the browser is healthy, because the flow ends at the redirect. A test pins it to that evidence. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_0126i8ymDVXbifp6LrbCiyQL

The open question for the iOS browser stalls (#469) is whether a dialog blocks the login. The existing capture could not answer it: it only streamed Runner and SafariViewService, and nothing recorded what was on screen. * While a login is still pending 20s, 50s and 80s in (a healthy iOS login takes ~3-5s), the harness reads the native UI tree of SpringBoard and of the app through Patrol's iOS automator. It prints any alert or sheet with its texts as "[e2e] STALL-PROBE". A once-per-plan "[e2e] SCREEN-PROBE-SELFTEST" proves the probe can see native UI, so a "no alert" during a stall means something. * The iOS job streams a second, info-level log of SpringBoard, backboardd, runningboardd, and any alert-related lines. It takes a simulator screenshot at every STALL-PROBE marker and a final one at the end. Logs are gzipped and uploaded with the screenshots in ios-simulator-log. …ost load The iOS browser stalls (#469) are slow process launches on a starved host. In run 37430662455 the 1-minute load average was 200-500, free memory about 4k pages, and swapouts climbed 0 -> 152744. The screen recording ruled out a dialog. Diagnostics that add load are now opt-in, and load reduction is a switch that can be measured on and off. * Default diagnostics cost nothing during the tests beyond a 3s ps/vm_stat sampler. The browser-flow evidence is read afterwards from the simulator's persisted unified log ("log show"): the harness's flutter lines and runningboardd's WebContent launch lines. .github/scripts/ios_ci_metrics.py turns them into login-duration and launch-latency distributions plus host load/free/swap figures, printed as [ios-metrics] lines. * workflow_dispatch input ios_heavy_diagnostics (default off) brings back the live log streams and the screen recording. * workflow_dispatch input ios_reduce_load (default on; always on for push/PR): - turns host Spotlight indexing off with mdutil (mdworker_shared and spotlightknowledged.updater were top host CPU users); - shuts down any other booted simulator first; - prefers the smallest iPhone the runtime offers over a 1206x2622 Pro-class device, to lighten SimRenderServer/SimMetalHost. GitHub's standard macos-26 arm64 runner is 3 vCPU / 7 GB RAM. Resolves the tests.yaml conflict between this branch's iOS 2-way sharding and #469's new "Start/Stop simulator log capture" + "Upload simulator log" steps: both are kept, and the upload artifact name is made per-shard (ios-${{ matrix.shard }}-simulator-log) since actions/upload-artifact requires unique names within one run and this job now has two parallel shards. No other files conflicted (#491's conformance-log-since-race fix and #469's harness/test changes landed in integration_test/ and test/, none of which this branch had touched). …help Measured over 2+ iOS runs each, none of these made the simulator browser stalls (#469) go away: * Spotlight off, other simulators shut down, smallest iPhone. Logins >30s per run: 1 and 4 without, 0 and 1 with (single job). In the sharded layout: 0/0 without, 2/1 with. * macos-26-intel (4 vCPU / 14 GB): Set up Environment took 9.5-15 min, and both shards hit the 60-minute timeout in their tests. Both are removed. What stays from the experiment is the cheap default diagnostics, heavy diagnostics as a dispatch input, and the boot ordering. The flaky stall itself is handled by the harness's evidence-gated single rerun. A system-wide spindump during a busy-app window in run 37568215348 put the host's 3 vCPUs at 15.5s of CPU in 5s, with the app's io.flutter.1.raster thread the busiest single thread (2.25s), spinning in -[FlutterMetalLayer nextTexture]: the engine busy-waits, without sleeping, for the previous frame's GPU work for up to 1s per frame. The conformance harness pumps only to launch its placeholder widget, but patrolTest's default fullyLive frame policy keeps drawing every frame the framework schedules, while the browser's WebContent launch waits at priority 4-46 under the raster thread's 50 (#469). On iOS the plans now run with LiveTestWidgetsFlutterBindingFramePolicy.onlyPumps, restored after each plan. A negative module such asoidcc-client-test-missing-athashthat wrongly logs in stayed invisible as long as any other module in the plan passed — how the implicit-flowat_hashgap shipped green in test(example): claim fragment and form_post conformance on linux/windows #447's CI.api/runner/{id}(the existinggetTestStatuscall) returns only live browser-interaction state (owner,created,browser,name,exposed,id,error,updated) — nostatus/result.
