Text-only framing edits ahead of peer review. No data, code, or logic touched — only markdown prose in .md files and notebook markdown cells.

What changed

  • 30_convergence.ipynb — XPBD framing now matches the convergence data: the equilibrium residual falls monotonically and the tip is still descending at the largest budget tested (no plateau); per-doubling gains shrink so closing the residual gets progressively more expensive. Added a note labelling the substeps = 4 point as a dt stability-floor artefact, not a convergence data point.
  • 10_hanging_bar.ipynb — reworded the XPBD clause in the Takeaway to "leaves a finite equilibrium residual at any fixed budget; more iterations drive it down but the cost grows." VBD sentence unchanged.
  • docs/STATUS.md — "clearly-broken numeric" → "clearly-unstable numeric".
  • docs/METHOD.md — "too poor to represent those modes" → "too stiff to represent those modes".
  • README.md — replaced the gotcha headline with a neutral benchmark title (marked with a <!-- headline: confirm wording --> comment for confirmation).

Verification

  • All notebooks remain valid nbformat JSON.
  • ruff check . passes; edits touch no code.
