Description:
I would like to suggest developing a dedicated browser-based client or Progressive Web App (PWA) optimized for very large MEGA accounts.
Currently, users with extremely large accounts (e.g. 2+ million files) can experience severe performance issues on the website. In my experience, the web client becomes extremely slow to load, sometimes freezes during login, gets stuck during the decryption phase, or crashes entirely before the account finishes loading.
This happens even on high-end hardware. My system has an Intel Core i7 13th Gen CPU, NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti GPU, and 64 GB of RAM, yet I still encounter these issues regularly. This suggests that the bottleneck may not be the user's hardware, but rather the limitations of running such large accounts inside a browser environment.
Modern browsers impose various restrictions on tabs and web applications, including memory limits, CPU scheduling constraints, and limited access to system resources. In practice, a browser tab may be unable to fully utilize the available hardware, and memory usage can become a major bottleneck when processing and decrypting millions of files. Even on systems with large amounts of RAM, the browser environment itself can become the limiting factor, causing slowdowns, freezes, or crashes.
I have also seen many reports from other users on forums and communities such as Reddit describing similar issues with large accounts, which indicates that this is not an isolated case.
A dedicated browser application or a Progressive Web App designed specifically for MEGA could potentially manage resources more efficiently and provide a more stable experience for power users with massive datasets.
Potential benefits:
- Faster login and account initialization.
- Better utilization of available CPU, GPU, and system memory.
- Reduced impact from browser memory and resource limitations.
- Better handling of accounts containing millions of files.
- Improved stability during decryption and folder tree loading.
- Fewer browser crashes, freezes, and timeouts.
- Better scalability for very large cloud storage libraries.
I understand that accounts with millions of files are an edge case, but the current web experience can become extremely difficult or even impossible to use reliably. It would be great if the team could consider a dedicated solution or additional optimizations targeted at very large accounts.
Thank you for your work on MEGA and for considering this feedback.
