Failed to persist entry GitRPC::BadObjectState how to debug?

I am using the editorial_workflow and am unable to save edits to particular entries. Some save, some receive a "failed to persist entry: API_ERROR: GitRPC:BadObjectState" error. I am unable to determine a pattern to the failure.

I have deployed using Netlify and have tried rebuilding the git repo there to no effect. git fsck shows no problem on my local copy. I'm somewhat stuck as I don't know how to debug. Thoughts? Thanks....
